im pissed because i just signed a 2 year contract with sprint thinking about the unlimited data. i knew slower speeds prior but this is dreadful. i don't want to return the phone, because I'm still tied to this contract. all i can do is sit and say WTF

If you return within 30 days your not tied to the contract

Wow. Just wow.

Why is this a mystery? This is the hundredth thread on the subject. You should have known this going in. Sprint 3G and Verizon 3G use CDMA Rev A(Code division multiple access )(CDMA) Maximum down loads of 3Gps theoretical speeds. 500kps to 700kps real world speeds.

Att has HSPA+, which are literally 10X the 3G speeds of Sprint or Verizon. There is no LTE on the iPhone 4S. The top end of ATT HSPA+ can be considered 4G based on speeds. 42Mps is fast. So is 21.1Mps, and yes 14.4Mps which the iPhone 4S is capable of.

Why would you switch to the Sprint network if you knew going in the speeds of their 3G network? Especially having the iPhone for the first time? What did you think was going to happen?

If you want fast speeds, go to ATT, if you want better coverage dependent on your area but Verizon has better coverage but slower speeds. Much slower speeds. Sprint has slower speeds than Verizon.

There is nothing wrong with the iPhone 4S as the same version is shipped to all carriers. That is a lame excuse for a lame network. If that was the case ATT 4S users would have problems too as would Verizon users.

Take the phone back and go ATT or Verizon. You have that right. Why complain? Just take it back.

lol don't get so worked up dude(man)

everyone knows sprint's network has the slowest speeds. prior to iPhone release, sure it was slow but it wasn't unusable.. as the iPhone speeds have become (for some people). literally takes 30 seconds to pull up the app store, and downloading takes even longer.

luckily, being a student, i constantly have wifi access so its not a big deal.

however, it is perfectly reasonable for people with sprint to be upset. why? they knew sprint had slower speeds but no one expected it to be this slow.

by the way, i am pretty sure most networks had similar issues with speeds when they first released the iPhone. i wouldn't be surprised if we saw sprint's speeds pick up eventually. either bc so many people get frustrated and leave, or bc something on the network side does get fixed

Well, I can say this: I used someone's Sprint iPhone 4S in San Antonio tonight and it was UNBELIEVEABLY slow. Over the course of an hour, and about 30 (+/-) speed tests, the highest speed we could get was 72 Kbps. My AT&T iPhone 4S was consistently getting speeds of 1.8 to 2.4 Mbps.

I felt really bad for him.

From what i've heard there is a known issue with data speed on the 4S with Sprint and they are working to get it fixed. It only is affecting the iPhone and not the androids.

For you to tell me that a phone that's less that one week old has known issues is ludacris.
is ludacris.

Im pretty sure sprint never advertised their 3g was the fastest...that was at&t.

Sprint says their 3g is the most dependable not fastest.

No, what people wont believe is it is in fact the iphone!
People with other phones are not having this problem. The iphone is.
I'm sorry your God "iphone" has a flaw. It's bound to get a fix. But don't be all over Sprint when it is in fact a iphone problem!!!
Do a search other phone are getting better signal while the iphone is not.

My iPhone 4S is getting faster speeds than some androids using 4G.

I can't see how it would be an iPhone problem since it is using the same network.

If it were the phone itself I would have problems on AT&T.

As there is known issue with Iphone 4S andthis issue is with Iphone not with our services. I request you to contact Sprint technical department at 888-211-4727 and follwo the prompt assistance.

Sprint really sent an e-mail this poorly written? Really?

That's not the number to tech support, either. That's just the general CS number, they also always include a note telling you that you can reach it by dialing *2 from your Sprint phone.

I call fake!

I don't think I ever ran a speed test on my iphone 3g when I bought it, but I know I wasn't having issues as bad as some of the folks on the sprint network. Just sayin.

You really dont like when Apple gets called out, huh?

If people can connect through Sprint 3G hotspots or Android phones or 3G modems and get decent speeds, yet get .12 down on the iPhone then its tough to say this has nothing to do with the phone.

Sprint is the newest network with Apple so refinements should be made on BOTH ends to give the end user equal speeds as the other devices on the network. Admitting this doesnt mean the iPhone is flawed, it only means that it can be improved. But that wont happen if everyone is a sycophant and pretends the issue is one sided.

Apple has NOTHING to do with providing the cell signal to the phone. That is the providers job. You pick Sprint and now you are stuck with crappy service. Don't blame Apple. Cancel within your 14 days and go to a real cellular provider.

We know this is wrong and early owners of the first iPhone will probably recall that people that had issues who called AT&T were met with a similar finger pointing towards Apple. Perhaps not everyone was told by AT&T that cell reception was Apple's fault but a high number. I do however believe that the phone itself could cause some issues but no service at all on the iPhone while it sits next to another (non iPhone) phone with equally bad service is not Apple's fault.

Don't you have 30 days, (like the other carriers)?
I would bring the thing back, cancel the contract, and sign with att.
I have tested att 3g many times over the week and I am getting between 2.19 and 2.64, (12.87 on wifi)

If you cannot get 2mbps, then there is no need to have a smart phone w/data plan -

The Sprint network for iPhone 4s isn't as good as the network on At&t or Verizon. We know this by countless threads on Macrumors and other sites. I decided to email sprint and ask for an explanation. My gripe was that I left T-Mobile on a 4g phone(no need for semantics about 14.4Mbps being 4g, I don't care) to come to the advertised " fastest 3g network" just to be smacked in the face with how slow it is. Before you start to judge I know the 4g phone will be faster, but come on I did a speed test and got 0.09Mbps download speed. This is my actual email to Sprint through their customer support website:

I just changed from T-Mobile to Sprint for this all great
Iphone 4s. This is the slowest phone I've ever had. I've downloaded the
speedtest apps and my results are shockingly low. Using the Washington,
DC server I have download speeds of 0.09Mbps and upload speeds of
0.03Mpbs. I've run this test several times and these were the highest
scores. What gives? Fastest 3g? Unlimited data shouldn't be an issue if
you can't utilize it. I would like an explanation, and possibly a refund
for services advertised but not rendered.

Yes, I was hard on the iPhone 4s, I'm sorry. I believe the gripe is real. This is my respsone that I got from sprint:

Dear Mr. Huffman,

Thank you for contacting Sprint. I apologize for the inconvenience you

information to resolve the issue.

Ok. Wtf? My response to Cora was not nice:

Thanks for the fast reply. Unfortunately I have 2 coworkers has this exact phone. One on the Verizon network and the other on the Att network and my iPhone 4s, I'm by far the slowest. I'm a Mac enthusiast and this email will be forwarded to Apple as well as shared with Apple-related forums. For you to tell me that a phone that's less that one week old has known issues is ludacris. If a phone like the 4s had known issues why would Sprint agree to buy 30 million units over the course of 4 years? I would like a thorough explanation why the Sprint iPhone 4s is dramatically slowed than the other 2 networks. FYI, I tested all three phones in the same place at the same time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Am i missing something?

Try doing same test with non-iPhone on Sprint network from same location along with your iPhone4s on Sprint network and you will have your answer - if Sprint is passing buck or is it issue with iPhone4s ? People relying too heavily on Speedtest.net results should also look at fact that are you able to use other data capability at acceptable performance or not e.g. youtube plays okay or not ? Could you browse to different sites without issue ?
I was in DC this January with my WM touch Pro on sprint network. I hired a cab to go to my friends place and cab driver had no idea how to reach that place. I started my touchpro Sprint Navigation and was able to do turn-by-turn navigation from phone without any issue in DC. So to say that it is phone issue or network issue will take some more testing done rather than just iphone.

Didnt you know this before getting the iPhone 4S?!?!?!?!???!?!?! This is your own fault. Everyone knows Verizon has the best coverage and ATT has best speed, but not all that great of coverage.

And we all know Sprint only advertises unlimited everything because their coevergae and speed sucks!

This is on you buddy.

i know this flyboy0. ive owned up to this one on the first page of this thread. i never said apple was perfect, nor did i say sprint was either. again, my gripe is that sprint threw apple under the bus after "betting the farm" on the iphone 4s.
i hope that there is some sort of fix or maybe sprint did throttle back the speeds knowing the data traffic jam there would be with 500,000 (loose number) iphones on their network.
I dont believe its worth it for me to return my phones , cancel my contract with sprint, just to walk next door and buy back the same phone from at&t and pay more for the same plan for less data. im not grandfathered into unlimited data, and im worried about overages, which wouldnt be a factor with sprint.

I love the phone. its great and incredibly responsive. not 1 dropped call in the week ive had the phone.

I am right there with you. Have had Sprint for years and admittedly, I continue to get locked into contracts even though I would like to see speeds of AT&T.

I believe the best I have gotten is 1Mbps, but Pandora streams fine and the internet is still relatively zippy due to low latency in my area.

Something I have just 'lived with'. I do not think we will see a change in the network for some time.. Sprint doesn't have the funds to go out and fix cell service, until they make their money back on the iPhone.

I am hoping to keep the 4S until 2013, at which Sprint better have come out with a wide spread LTE, or I will be jumping ship to Verizon's LTE.

Just my $.02. I had an Evo 4g prior. While the 4G was GREAT I rarely found it available, battery life sucked, and I couldn't do anything on 3G. At least with the iPhone I can perform the tasks I need to on 3G in my area.

Patience is a virtue that is not very common, have some patience. When AT&T got iPhone people were whinning and bitching same like this. Give some time and things will improve. As I mentioned earlier dont just rely solely on speedtest.net results but look at actual user experience on data front.

I think this is a logical conclusion. If only one phone is getting slow 3g speeds, then it is probably the phone. That doesn't mean that Sprint doesn't need to look for a resolution, but it makes sense to blame the phone (although that emails showed very poor communication skills.)

I haven't done much 3g testing yet.
a. I have noticed a decrease in reception quality with my Sprint phones over the past 3 months. My sister has also noticed the same thing and we live in the same area
b. I generally have good access to wifi (I work from home or locations with wifi)

So we'll see, but generally I am pretty happy.

if anyone read my first post on the front page the rep told me that it was a network outage for iphones

This is the most easy solution: Stop getting on Sprint for the iPhone 4S, HTC, etc and go to Verizon, if it is available in your area, for better service, connection, speed, etc.

Bottomline, if it is still within 14 days, return it asap and pay whatever cost you need to get on Verizon. Otherwise, pay your ETF and then do it. Otherwise, you are stuck and theres nothing you can do about.

How Sprint said it was the iPhone's fault is bogus, but who cares. I dont. Im glad they said it. What would you have said? "Oh yeah, our network sucks, sorry." Of course not.

Sprint has to back up their network when crazy people call and expect every single question answered.

I don't believe it's an iPhone issue. The support techs I spoke to said they were aware of the problem and are working on it.

Here's the thing though. When I got my phone (4S) the last thing on my mind was to test the download speed using an app. In all the time I had my EVO I never once tested it. So when I started using my phone I was satisfied and everything worked fine. I was able to use Siri, any one of my apps that have to connect to the Internet as well as Safari. Yes depending where I was and the strength of the signal performance did vary, but for the most part it was fine.

Then I saw the threads about slow speed and I started using the app to test mine. Yeah the tests weren't stellar and all of a sudden I started feeling worse about it. And for a few days I totally fed into these threads.

First thing this morning I shut off WiFi and strictly used 3G. I didn't run a single test and just used my phone as I normally would. By the end of the day I realized I had forgotten all about this speed issue.

I guess my point is that sometimes you can get hung up on specs and testing and whatnot and not even realize that the performance you're getting is fine.

That's not to say that everyone is going to have my experience. And I'm sure there are those that won't be able to use their phones as successfully as I do. But it pays to at least try a few days without resorting to the speed tests and to stop reading the threads. Just see what your experience is like and if it's really bad then make the switch to either VZN or AT&T.

Totally agree with this. Unless you are 1) a business user who uses your phone a lot to do your work and require fast data for things like downloading files or 2) a user who likes to use their phone for data-intensive activities that require fast speed such as tethering or watching a lot of movies.....Sprint is pretty good for everyday use. Who cares about the difference in seconds between the time it takes to upload a pic on Twitter or whether a webpage downloads in less than 5 seconds? Granted, it can be annoying to wait for an app to finish in less than a few minutes BUT you can safely say that you can still use your phone for normal use. Unless you're in a really bad area where there is NO data connection at all and you get a lot of dropped calls, I don't see the big deal over Sprint's service.
