after reading it I'd think Sprint offered Apple $20 to ensure they got the iPhone, not the EXCLUSIVE iPhone. I can see them saying we will buy $20B to make it known to Apple that it is worth their investment into their architecture.

re original article

very interesting

1) a wimax ip5 - clearwire possibly involved

2) sprint going high stakes - betting the farm and pretty daughter

very interesting indeed...

Actually, it might be true. At&t, Verizon and rest of the world get iPhone 4s. Sprint gets iPhone 5 with wimax. Then in the 1st quarter when the new 4g chips are available, everyone else gets iPhone 5 and Apple makes tons of cash.

Not gonna happen...Sprint Wimax is not LTE like the rest of the world which is gonna go LTE. Sprint is rumored to go LTE but that won't happen till 2012 or 2013.

We might get the Iphone 5 tomorrow and it could be LTE. That could be the surprise along with the new design.

I think we are gonna be wowed!

Sprint might only be getting the Iphone 4S.

It's common knowledge that no matter what the Apple followers say before an announcement, no matter how much they hate what they hear. If it comes true the cult will eat their words with glee and suck up to Apple.

Apple Always Wins! And The Lemmings Brag About It

I doubt the iPhone 5 thing is true.

That means 3 different versions of the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 with WiMAX
iPhone 5 with LTE
iPhone 5 with HSPA+

I think when the iPhone supports any of the "4G" flavours it's going to be LTE, since, unless I'm mistaken, is the most widespread one.

You're forgetting that an LTE and WiMAX phones require a 2G/3G fall-back. In the case of GSM carriers around the world, the obvious solution is an iPhone 5 with LTE/HSPA+/GSM. It's only when Verizon and Sprint (and other CDMA carriers) are brought into consideration that we run into issues.

I highly doubt we'll see a WiMAX iPhone, especially since Sprint intends to launch LTE in the future (albeit on frequencies that will be in common with only the Chinese since Clear is building the TD-LTE network there, putting into question the possibility of a truly global LTE iPhone until the costs of a hex-band LTE antenna goes down enough).

Either way, the idea of Sprint offering Apple this much money for a supposed launch exclusive for the iPhone 5 is an absolutely terrible idea. In the event that people actually do switch to Sprint for the iPhone 5 and in the event that the iPhone 5 does have WiMAX, Sprint's going to have to put an end to unlimited data real quickly. Not only is WiMAX's deployment less complete than Verizon's LTE deployment, I doubt Sprint's EV-DO network could handle the theoretical mass of iPhone 5 switchers. Blaming the iPhone for their high churn rate is ridiculous, as well. They've got plenty of issues that contribute to their churn rate, the lack of the iPhone being the least significant/contributing.

Calling BS. Doesn't make sense. *Waits for Apple to announce iPhone 5 for AT&T and Verizon while Sprint gets iPhone 4S*

I heard this is why Steve really left....he got over ruled on preventing this from happening.

I will preface this with the statement that I believe this to be a complete load of bunk and don't see any feasibility of a Sprint exclusive.

I will also preface it by acknowledging that in the distant past I have a very bad experience with Sprint that involved the Minnesota's Attorney Generals office to make it end 1) they way I wanted it to and 2) the way it should have ended in the first place. Completely horrible customer service experience.

That said....If Apple were to poop in my Cornflakes like this I would drive immediately to At&T, purchase a Samsung Galaxy S II....and never, every buy another iPhone....or Apple product for that matter.

This would be telling 40 bazillion current iPhone owners that they basically don't mean squat.

End of rant.

Tomorrow should be quite entertaining.

Steve

With the amount of cash being laid on Apple, is it farfetched to see them building a 4G WiMAX phone for Sprint as the iPhone 5 (giving them the "exclusive") while they wait for the LTE chips to mature for iPhone 5 releases for Verizon and AT&T?

Same phone, different chipsets. With Sprint basically buying the phones upfront, where is the loss to Apple to throw a bunch of WiMAX phones out on the market -- especially if the chipsets are mature enough to meet Apple's power-draw standards.

Sprint has money to invest, they have the cheapest plans and everyone gets approved for sprint bad credit or no credit with a $50 deposit.

The way people went crazy for the HTC Evo, it will be 100 times that with an iPhone

Steve

why would buy a different phone if apple produced a phone you wanted but had to wait a 3 month period for it to arrive at your carrier? the only thing that means squat is them making money.

this rumor is unlegit...

Statistically 90% of the room will be filled with AT&T and Verizon customers who will boo Tim right off stage during his first keynote, great idea *insert sarcasm*

Apple went exclusively at first because AT&T was the only carrier willing to let Apple control the content on their own phone, AND because their network is faster and more stable (straight from Jobs mouth at D8 last year). Sprint would try something like this because they are making it VERY obvious they are struggling by their strong protest to the T-Mobile AT&T merger while Verizon's CEO thinks is a great idea for everyone's business. But it does not seem like something Apple would agree too, it would hurt their brand and their amazingly positive customer loyalty.

Over? This is only phase 1.

Phase 2 will start tomorrow after the announcement (people will be disappointed and feel the need to comment/express themselves).

......and backpedal about how they deep down knew the iPhone 5 would be released and it was peer pressure that made them shout "ONLY THE 4S IS BEING RELEASED!!!".
