Smart move by Apple if this is true and even smarter move by Sprint. Bravo.

lol @ all the pouting fanboys. **** UP

according to rumor, Verizon skipped the GSII because they felt it would not be competitive with the iphone 5. So they are instead waiting for the droid prime from samsung, or whatever. Maybe it's because they knew sprint would have exclusive rights to the iPhone 5? Who knows really. I'm just throwing that out there.

As a fan of Macrumors, it troubles me that Macrumors believes there's a chance Sprint will get the iPhone 5 timed exclusively and will post it on the front page.

HELLO!! I WILL POST IT AGAIN

Actually this could work out really well for Apple and if WSJ reports it then it has credibility. Here is the scenario!:

Apple gets guaranteed sales for the next 2-4 years from sprint. Sprint gets iphone 5 exclusive for 3-5 months then 2012 all carriers get iphone 5 along with the iphone 4s that will be released next week. I would give some company this small window of exclusiveness for 3+ years of guarnateed sales!

ATT and verizon and everyone else can get the phone in Jan 2012. They would not be losing any sales u would just have to wait a few more months if you want it on your carrier.

Except that Apple doesnt need to do this in order to get this deal. Sprint would do anything to get the iPhone. They are fighting for survival. Giving them an exclusive sales period sounds like Apple is the desperate one.

Guessing this wouldn't affect getting the 5 in the UK

That brings up a great point actually. What about places outside of the US?

Can't wait until tomorrow, hopefully BGR will be blacklisted after their 20 rumor exclusives that end up burning in flames. Don't put much thought into this folks. BGR's track record is worse than garbage.

If we needed one last rumour, I'm glad it was this one. Wonder if this extends to new and exciting carriers worldwide - Telecom NZ?

I note the OP mockup pic shows no gesture-enabled home button, which was tbh a big pull of the better design mockups, hmmm, arguing the toss on a mockup ><.

I think that's the first time I've seen downrating on a front page post anyway, surely everyone should be hoping beyond hope that this could be the case?

If you were a fan of Macrumors you'd understand that it isn't them that reported the story. They post any rumours that any source provides. They don't believe in it as much of the next rumour.

a) That's not what the rumor said...they are reporting two seperate rumors that BGR has blended into one.

b) They havent stated what they belive. They are just reporting the rumor hence....wait for it....Macrumors.com

They're posting the latest news and rumors, as they always do. This rumor has been making its way around the net, so MacRumors picked up on it. I guess that's why they call themselves "MacRumors" and not "MacFacts".

How can you be disappointed in them doing the very thing they are supposed to be doing?

These rumours are interesting if true.

How embarrassing for all the haters that bash "free" Android phones. Actually I think a free iPhone makes a lot of sense. I'm sure many of you, who claim specs don't matter will agree.

The average person has no clue about the inner workings or specs, nor do they care. They only want an iPhone because they are into fashion, or having what their neighbor has, or some other vanity driven issue.

Ego is a big factor here, Steve Jobs drove that one home for years. The ultimate spin master has crafted a speech for Tim that will make anything, no matter how absurd, sound like a wonderful "Magical & Revolutionary" development.

Tomorrow will mark another milestone in the continuing saga of "Apple Works Miracles".

The crowd will roar in approval, empty their wallets and slap each other on the back with big smiles plastered on their faces.

Ya gotta love it... :)

iPhone is simply the phone of choice and Sprint is in a position of not having the iPhone at all currently. I can't see how Apple would ever commit to giving a new carrier an exclusive phone all to itself such as something as huge as the iPhone 5. Add on top of that 20 Billion is not a huge figure to Apple considering how many iPhones they are going to sell in the next year after this refresh.

Some of you people will believe anything in the off chance it means you get an iPhone 5 tomorrow.

Just a bunch of sour grape reactions from people who aren't on Sprint and feel bitter seeing the iPhone 5 go to their subscribers first.

I applaud Sprint if this actually is true tomorrow. Crazy rumor, but an aggressive move by them to bet the farm on iPhones.

Apple doesn't need the money just to give Sprint exclusivity. They have a winning product with the iPhone. I'm highly skeptical of this.

Likewise, I'm not convinced Sprint can afford to, nor would wisely choose to spend $20 billion on exclusivity only until Spring 2012.

As a longtime and satisfied Sprint customer I hope its true! ATT coverage sucks big time here in Los Angeles and Sprint works really well. I'd love to see WiMax support after waiting years to get an iphone, haha.

BS for one reason alone.

The iPhone is a gateway for additional income to Apple. If the 5 is going to have more feature wise then they are cutting themselves off from dollars from the Apple store.

I'd switch to spring IF I could do both voice/data but until that is changed I'll stick with sucky AT&T. I'll take a few dropped calls vs being able to be on my phone and working at the same time.

If Apple doesn't come out with a newly designed iPhone 5 with a larger display this year (i.e. tomorrow), it'll be a nail in the coffin of the iPhone. There is simply no way they can compete with everybody else if they have such a slow product cycle.

I really hope this rumor that Sprint will be getting the phone is true.

When AT&T had the exclusive, it was only in the USA. If Sprint got an exclusive, it would also be limited to the USA.

Interesting rumor.

Sprint is known for committing to short term exclusives as with the EVO and Palm Pre.

Sprint also likes big screens. If nothing else, it would let Apple know how to judge actual desire for such.

I think it only makes sense if the logic board and most of the electrical design is as close to identical as possible. Basically, Sprint would have to approach Apple in that scenario and say "Hey, make a bigger iPhone and we'll eat all of your risk." That would be an incredibly ballsy move (and make me an instant Hesse fan), but I highly doubt Apple is going to sit down and listen to someone telling them what the market wants and what they should be creating.

The main reason (one of them anyway) I believe this to be BS is that I don't believe that Apple would release the 4S for ATT and VZ, release the iPhone 5 for Sprint, then tell everyone out of the other side of their mouth that they only need to wait till Q1 of next year to get the 5 on other carriers. Why the hell would I buy a 4S then?

Clearly they wouldn't come out and say that, but that is what's being reported here.

No chance.
