Nope. It's true. I asked when I can close my Sprint account and they told me that I can do it 30 days before the contract is up without penalty. They started doing that about 6 months ago.

You are right. I just got off the phone with Sprint and verified exactly what you said. You can cancel your contract within the last 30 days and will not get charged an ETF.

Whoever I talked to at sprint a month or so ago obviously had no idea about this.

Thanks for the heads up!!! You just shaved a month off my wait time for an iPhone :D

My Sprint Contract expired yesterday and I was the first person in the AT&T store this morning to get my Iphone 3G (white 16 Gig)

It's official, goodbye Sprint, hello AT&T

Eric

I've got 3.5 months left on my sprint family plan. The ETF on 2 phones (total of $400) is the only thing holding me back right now from owning an iPhone. ARgggghhhh

Sprint annouced a year ago that they would be going with pro-rated ETF's but yet a year later still nada.

Patience, grasshopper. You will get your iPhone when you can snatch the pebble from my hand.;)

Seriously, its just a couple of months. I wouldn't pay that much just to get an iPhone 2-3 months early.

My wife and I were with sprint for well over 5 years. During that time we were repeatedly screwed over by Sprint. To give you an idea of what things were like with them I'll give you an abbreviated version of 2007-2008 with them.

Feb 07: For valentines day my wife gets me the (product) RED Razr.
March: An early termination fee shows up on our bill, attached to my phone #. My wife spends 5 hours on the phone with sprint trying to sort this out. During this time she is hung up on 3 times. After hang up # 3 we head to the sprint store. After waiting for over an hour for the store manager to get off the phone with his girlfriend we explain the situation. The response? "we don't handle customer service problems at this location. You will have to go to our ofer store at..." We end up at the other store 15 minutes before closing. We spend the next 15 minutes waiting for someone to help us, only to be told "I'm sorry, but we are closing you will have to come ba-" which is about the point I started yelling. The words that flew out of my mouth were along the lines of "**** you! We have been dealing with this ****** up company all day, and we are both staying here until this ******* bull**** is straightened out!". At this point one of the completely untrained employees picked up the phone and called the police. My wife leaves. Some of the employees leave. I'm left in the store argueing with the manager and the assistant manager. They decided to try to physically force me out of the store right as the police officer pulls up in front of the store. Catching a glimpse of his arrival out of the corner of my eye I hit the floor. The officer comes in and draws his gun on the employees! A brief discussion occurs where the officer asks Thier side of the story and then asks mine. I explain my day to him and at the end he says "sounds like sprint allright." The employees of the store insist that tresspassing charges be filed. The officer explains to them that is an option, but I can press charges of assult. He also asks them to explain why they didn't simply try to help me in the first place, to which they gave some sorry excuse about being busy, bla bla bla.
A few days later: with a copy of the police report in hand we get Sprint's legal department on the phone. A few hours later they call back asking what our plans are. After another lengthy conversation we finally get the charge to our account reversed. Or so we thought...
May: the charge reappears on our account. Another three hour call later we get it reversed again.
June: our monthly rate for 1000 shared minutes, no data, no text, has somehow hit $150 per month before taxes and fees. A three hour call ensues with no resolution. The next day I file a formal complaint with the FCC.
August: We get a call from sprint regarding the FCC complaint. After over an hour of getting nowhere we give up, noticing the sprint representative that we will be taking things further with the FCC.
The next day: I call the FCC. They inform me that sprint had let them know that the "issue was resolved peacefully with the customer over a month ago."!
At this point I give up. I decide to save up some money so I can cover the ETFs.
Late January: I talk to a sprint rep who is actually friendly. He informs me that I am at 11 months and I will pay the "second year" rate on the ETF. Great! Time to switch! AT&T here I come!
February 2008: The final bill comes from sprint, in the amount of $1,300! Aparently I signed up for three lines even though my wife and I each only had one phone. That's right, ETFs for three lines, first year rate.

Trust me, wait until your contract is over.

I was with Sprint for 7 years. The frst 6 years service was fine enough. It was well known that customer service was horrible though and always had been, but as long as you stuck to your rate plan and didn't provoke any account changes, you largely didn't have to deal with them.

Then, the Sprint telemarketers started hounding me. Several times a week I'd get calls. No, I don't want early nights and weekends, 7pm is fine. No, my existing text messaging plan is fine, I don't need unlimited text messaging. Oh, my account is approved for five lines? Gee, that's nice to know. No thanks, I don't want to add another line right now.

This kept going on until finally, I caved, and allowed one of these idiots to add unlimited text messaging to my account for a month for free, thinking I'd just drop back to my old text messaging plan in a month.

Oh, if only it were that simple.

Turns out, the rep who called me removed my text messaging plan, AND my data plan, and then failed to add the plan she was trying to sell me. This also happened to be a month where I was traveling a lot and needed to tether my phone (I had the tethering plan, or so I thought, so it was all supposed to be legit). So my text messaging was pay per use, and my data was now per-kilobyte, even though i THOUGHT I was paying a flat rate for unlimited use of both.

Imagine the shock when my bill 6 times higher than it usually was, by about a few hundred dollars.

I ended up having to fight with Sprint for several months to get the bill straightened out, and even then it was never the same again. It didn't help that somehow the reps I spoke to seemed convinced that I wanted to pay per use, and that I requested the removal o those addons. Because you know, it makes so much sense that I would voluntarily choose to pay many times more per month than I had been in the past.

Anyway, the experience was so bad I was glad to pay the ETF and port out. Now I'm loving the rollover minutes, loving the data speed, and now, loving my iPhone.

I have been with Sprint for 8 years. Service has been good. The store is always busy and under staffed. My contract expired 2 years ago so I have been waiting it out for something better. I would jump to AT&T but I am worried about their network that seems weaker than Sprint. That and the data charges are way to high.

I had sprint/nextel and they told me I had until 06/09 on my contract for three phones. I spoke with a manager and told him to produce a document that has my signature on it that shows I agreed to the contract. HE was unable to provide any record that I had agreed to extending my contract and he adjusted the dates back to my original contract expiration date in 2007. I went to AT&T the next day cancelled my sprint/nextel account and got two iphones. Hope this helps someone else in this dilemma.

I would jump to AT&T but their network has always been the pits. Sprint's is just much faster, has been since the first gen iPhone and still beats the snuff out of the 3G iPhone.

That and the poor build quality of the iPhone 3G and the complete lack of protection for my $400 phone keeps me with Sprint and their crappy Windows Mobile phones.

Oh! And the fact that I get my plan for about $50 less per month. If Sprints gets some of the HTC phones that are out in other countries I may stick with them for another two years until AT&T gets a real network or Apple makes a stronger phone.

TRUST ME ON THIS, WAIT UNTIL THE CONTRACT IS OVER

I can get out of the contract within the last 30 days and not get hit with a ETF. I'll give it once extra day, but on my 29th day left with Sprint, I will be going to AT&T and be porting 2 sprint numbers over to brand new sparkling iPhones. Hopefully 32G units by that time :D

I got out of my contract last January when Sprint raised their administrative fees on my (everyone's) account. This is a breach of contract on Sprint's side, so I was able to get out ETF free.

It might work again if you haven't paid your October bill. I recall seeing a fee hike on a bill. By paying your bill it means you agree to the new terms.
