5G is the 4K of TVs.

We can't even get 4G signal right, let alone 5G.
4K part of UHD TV is certainly underwhelming, especially since most movies these days are shot in 2K (then upscaled to 4K) AND most people sit too far to benefit from higher pixel density.

But it did produce very nice byproducts -- HEVC and HDR. HEVC can greatly lower file size and thus bandwidth. HDR to me is almost as significant as a jump from 480p (DVD) to 1080p (HD). If only content producers encode 1080p with HDR in HEVC.

I think faster speed in 5G will also be underwhelming, but it has also interesting byproducts -- lower latency and greater capacity. Lower latency and other improvements will eventually improve battery life (although mmWave might counter some of that). And as 4G/LTE is becoming congested in many areas, additional capacity is much needed.

Not that there is a choice now, but I’m unconvinced 5G is without health implications. You must have significantly more towers because of the much shorter ranges and lack a penetration due to the higher frequencies associated with 5G. More rushed tech before we’ve explored the implications of it.

The feels when certain networks still can't even manage to get you a decent 3G connection in one of the busiest cities in the world, but are now jumping to 5G.
5G actually is intended to solve some of the problems that the previous Gs have so by enabling 5G wireless providers are addressing the issues you complain about.

While all this is true, 5G is not going to be limited to mmWave.
Agreed, but the Macrumors summary specifically said "The type of 5G network that Sprint is rolling out uses millimeter wave spectrum, which offers blazing fast data transfer speeds but is sensitive to interference and limited in range..."

Maybe I misunderstood what the author was saying.

Nah, 5G is the 8K of TV's. 4K is a worthwhile upgrade from 1080P. 8K is massive overkill that people won't even notice.

1990s: You're never going to use more than the 20GB hard disk space.

Wait until applications are designed to utilize the new network speeds like running a full cloud app while taking almost "no" space on your devices.

I wish I could get excited about this - but I have had nothing but bad experiences with Sprint. First it was I couldn't get service in my house in a big metro area. They told me they were doing work on towers to improve coverage. They ended, coverage didn't improve. Moved to another metro area, maybe a little better, but not great. Now, back in my home town and I constantly have to toggle with my settings because coverage is hit or miss.

I appreciate the unlimited data - but once this contract is up, I'm out.

Same frequencies as LTE on Sprint. Provide credible sources about "microwaving" people or quit with the fear mongering. The spectrum you're referring to has trouble penetrating fabric. Not sure how it's going to make it through our epidermis... lol. Sprint's 2.5 GHz spectrum (which has many times the range of mmW) was criticized in its early deployment for being unable to "penetrate a paper bag". Ridiculous.
[doublepost=1559246626][/doublepost]Early testing on Twitter is showing similar peak speeds to AT&T's 5Ge, but on an empty network...
I think if you spend 10 mins on google you will find plenty of issue with 5G.
If you are in the group "won't penetrate...." then I'm sorry but we probably won't be on the same page. Its fine though.
However, one thing we can agree on (I hope). 5G hasn't been thoroughly tested for the effect on human body. They are rushing it to have it out. Sad reality.

P.s.: regardless of what you believe I hope we can agree that the increased cancer rate in the past xxx years is contributed mainly from the lifestyle our current society has. We are polluting everything. It is literally that simple.

so the 1990s rule will be true? :-D (sorry, I had to :D :D :D )

You mean 20Mb. Believe it or not.

honest 5G question, does it render fiber useless?
This thing can reach up to 1Gb/s speeds, if available, how is fiber better?
Remember with fiber you need to extend a wire... for every router

10 minutes of Google or the years worth of research done by companies actually using the mmW spectrum? 10 minutes of Google can tell me how awful vaccines are, and how flat the earth is... Google is not a credible source. Google can be used to find credible sources. And not 5gcausescancer.com or americannaturemommy.com.

Pardon my ignorance on this 5G.

I suppose it's faster.

I have heard rumours that it's really only going to be great in "stadiums" and stuff like that - maybe because of range and interference challenges...

Is it going to kick buttt on typical Wifi connections? Can't Wifi compete - at least in theory?

Nope. I will not use Sprint after years of terrible service, unless forced to by a merger with T-mobile.

i said the same thing back in the WIMAX days ... but when they came with a 15/month unlimited plan (480p video, no hotspot/tethering) back in june 2018, i decided to take a chance again with them ... in denver i have a couple of dead spots ... but all in all, for $19.19 month after taxes/fees and unlimited data, i'm not complaining!

You are right and I understand your analogy. However, do you feel that having tons more antennas penetrating cities (as 5G requires more antennas than 4G) is a good thing? I don't need to mentioned that some antennas are so dangerous in close distance that can actually harm you. So, lets forget google etc. do you feel that having more antennas in general will not make it worse on our already health declining society? Each step this are getting worse and worse. (just like the boiling frog analogy).
Anyway, neither of us can really 'prove' it so we will be speculating. I believe that its going to have some negative effect on us you believe its probably safe. Only time will provide us with the data (hopefully)

P.s.: Just a thought - since when researchers were credible in the past? Especially when most of the research are biased and funded by the parties that want certain outcome. As has been proven many times in the past.

Anyway, all good. I see your angle ;)
Have a great day and lets see what WWDC brings us :)
