This will really put everyone who said "I wouldn't use Sprint even if it was free" to the test.
Still not doing it, lol. They literally can't even give away their service. That being said, I hope they get their crap together. We need competition!

I don't understand all the hate for Sprint. I was on Sprint's unlimited plan for 2 years and it was the best and fastest service I ever had. I have also been on Verizon and T-Mobile. I had to get off Sprint simply because the $80/month was too much for me. But I was sad to leave. If my T-Mobile iPhone 7 Plus was eligible, I would definitely be making the switch back to Sprint for this deal.

I live in a suburb 50 miles east of LA. :p AT&T works fantastic for me, especially compared to T-Mobile(Yes, I've used T-Mobile before). If I was going to jump ship, I'd gladly pay the cost of Verizon.
But when did you use T-Mobile? Really, I have AT&T and my wife has T-Mobile, and while it used to be I would have coverage in areas she didn't, she now gets coverage in those areas AND areas that I don't.

The last time I had Sprint, my former company was paying the bill as we were provided company phones (remember Palm phones?) since we constantly traveling around the country. I really didn't have any issues back then with Sprint, but I'm happy with T-Mobile after switching from AT&T earlier this year.

What if you're already a Sprint customer?

Can you just cancel your account, buy an old Verizon iPhone 5C (or other compatible phone), then sign up for this deal? (Maybe in the wife's name if you have to)

Or do they check to see if you are already a Verizon or AT&T customer?
You have to port your existing number to Sprint, so you must already be a customer of their competitors.
[doublepost=1497456910][/doublepost]I have had all of the major carriers over the years and ultimately, T-Mobile's customer service is the best. Their coverage has also dramatically improved in the past year or so and is continuing to improve.

As for taking Sprint up on the offer, we don't really have any unlocked phones that we can do this with, as we are still on payments with our existing equipment, so even if I were tempted, I wouldn't be able to.

I'll happily continue to pay T-Mobile for actual service. Why not allow us to just sign up for a new line so we can test their service instead? Asking me to move my numbers reeks of a desperation move to have their competitors subscriber count drop for no gain on their end.

Holy crap, Sprint must be desperate as hell. Oh, and there is no way I'm giving up AT&T for Sprint nor T-mobile's crappy service.

You would be surprised how much has changed at T-Mobile. At first it was a little spotty but now I would never get another service. I drop way fewer calls with them than when I had AT&T.

My favorite was when an AT&T rep tried to sell me on a plan that would combine the TV/Internet and the Phone. It sounded sooooo good. Then I asked about international coverage and the costs associated. It was a no contest in a matter of 30 seconds.

T-mo rocks!

Give them a try. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I might consider this considering my current carrier doesn't do anything for their loyal customers. I tried to ask T-Mobile if I can take advantage of $140 for 4 lines. They told for new customers only. That's $1920 savings right there for my family if I go to Sprint. Maybe get a Cricket Wireless for backup in case no coverage in certain areas.

Call again. T-Mobile made it absolutely clear that all promotions are available to both new and existing customers. I just took advantage of the new promo with the free line and had zero problems. Have been with them for a couple of years now. You should have no trouble at all.

Yeah, T-Mobile actually did exactly that. They would give you an iPhone to test drive the network. I did it and it definitely played a role in making the switch.

No, but you could likely port your # to another postpaid carrier (VZW or ATT) then a day or two later port back to Sprint. You might pay activation fees with the intermediate carrier, but if you have 5 lines and are paying $$$$ a month, it could be worth jumping through the hoops and paying a few activation fees. Ethically, I'm not sure where this type of maneuvering falls on the spectrum of honesty - but if it isn't against the terms of the offer, I guess that would work. For example, T-Mo clearly didn't want people maneuvering/twisting their offer to pay off phones to switch to them ... T-Mo fine print said you had to be with a postpaid carrier w/ financed phone 60+ days to take them up on their offer. I don't see any similar fine print with Sprint's offer, which to me means they just want to be sure they're getting another carrier's postpaid account moved to Sprint. These types of numbers can mean a lot in the corporate world.

Or do they check to see if you are already a Verizon or AT&T customer?

I think they simply check that the number is on a postpaid carrier. That would mean a lot of the prepaid carriers won't work for this.

I switched to Sprint from AT&T last year when I got my new iPhone 7. They cut my AT&T bill in half, even including monthly payments on the brand new iPhone.

Reception is great in Chicago. And, Sprint has free Wifi calling. So even inside some office buildings downtown where you may not get great reception, it doesn't matter.

I love my T-Mobile service too much to even go to Sprint even to get a free year. I did try Sprint on my iPad Pro one month just to see how their service works in my area and I was impressed.

I enjoyed reading this part of your signature after your post... He hangs on to what he can in his old beliefs even when he is compelled to surrender their logical basis. :p
It's a matter of coverage. They can offer me all the free stuff they want, but it won't increase their coverage in my area. Sprint is a deadzone here.

I have a iPhone 6 that has an international prepaid service. Wonder if it is worth the hassle to switch to Sprint and use the SIM on my iPad...if that even works.

Many times companies will have a look back period for a couple reasons. If you leave voluntarily, and come back a couple months later, maybe the don't have to do a new credit check. And can just reactivate the old account.

Also, to try to avoid churn by giving old customers the new customer special. I can see that happening here. They don't want existing customers to just stop paying for a year, yet still provide service to them.

There is actually a gain on their end if you port your number. You are probably more likely to use their service if you port your number. Otherwise, if you have an extra compatible phone like me, and just signed up with an additional line of service, you may test it on a few occasions. But since it is an additional line, you are not likely to be carrying the phone with you. People will still call you on your old number.

Myself, if I wanted to test this, I need to port from my existing carrier, Verizon. Service is the 9th to the 9th. So I would be losing part of a month's usage if I ported. If I don't like it, and switch away within 2 months, i don't get reimbursed for the $30 activation fee either.

I'm currently testing the ATT prepaid network right now with Cricket on a second phone. Which is going well locally, but I want to see how it works in Colorado/Wyoming/Nebraska compared to Verizon before deciding to switch my main number. If I could use a new number, I could try 3 :)

We just finished a contract with ATT and the three iPhones are paid for. I am now looking at switching carriers. I DON'T want to buy new phones, but this looks like a good deal if the coverage is good and you can use your current phone. Personally I am looking at Cricket and Consumer Cellular, both take ATT phones. I had Sprint years ago and had to stand on my back porch and face west to get a call out no crap. ATT has been phenomenal with coverage. in central Illinois/Chicago area.

Yikes even if the offer were available for AT&T I wouldn't switch. That's like going from living in a cardboard box to living in a sewer.

Update: I like free, so we have done this. A few tips if you are porting from Verizon to Sprint:

1) check your voicemails, they may go away
2) be sure you know your pin... mine is a word that I can type to Verizon using numberpad when calling customer care. The first time I tried porting the Verizon number over using the #s it rejected it. I got a call from Sprint and they tried again and I think they said they used the letters. Not sure, but something to double check!
3) With Verizon, there is a dash in your account number. Just remove the dash on Sprint's port in form or it won't accept the acct #

We will test around town for a few days and see how things go. If it is fabulous or terrible, I'll update. If it just works and I don't notice much of a difference I probably won't remember to update.

Does anyone know if Sprint's WiFi calling will work with a non-Spring iPhone?

I literally just activated my iPhone SE on Sprint (was originally on Verizon) and tried the Sprint Wi-Fi calling. It says there is an error due to "the account level settings on my account set by the account owner"

I don't honestly expect to use Wi-Fi calling, so I won't probably look in to this more... just wanted to share.

Seems a bit dramatic, considering what we are talking about here ;) #firstworldmetaphors

FYI - Worked all day today and was all over the city (Albuquerque, NM). Plugged phone into AUX and dialed a phone number to listen to a local radio station over the phone rather than via FM radio. Did this so I could tell if I went through bad service areas through the day as I traveled. Although I never talk this much on my phone normally, this allowed me to test the service quality quickly. I expected the service to have some dead spots, but I have not dropped the call even once after a 1/2 day of work and driving around the city 1 full day today.

Although I don't discount that some people have bad Sprint service in their area, it certainly doesn't seem like a given. Just putting this out there for those considering taking up this offer. The biggest (and only) issue I have had so far is Verizon giving me the wrong info for my account PIN initially when I called them to get info before porting out.

Have you considered Google FI (https://fi.google.com/about/)? I'm curious about it. I believe you can get it to work on an iPhone, but have to "activate" the SIM on a compatible phone. Otherwise, you get 4G internet overseas, which would be sweet. I'm just worried how much data I'd use. $10/gig would add up quickly, I would think. Currently, since my LTE is unlimited, I don't pay attention to how much I actually use.

No I havn't, fidn't know you could with iphone. Have to investigate.

Update for anyone curious: Sprint has been fine everywhere I have gone over the last few days - and I travel a lot. Service has worked, texts and data has been reliable, etc. HOWEVER, my other half works in a large hospital complex and gets "Extended 3G" in the building. Calls work but data in the building isn't great. They use wifi to get around this. Verizon, oddly enough, got a signal inside the hospital but didn't work in the parking lot or for a few blocks nearby.

I've also missed being able to use data (including getting iMessages) while on a phone call. I forgot that Sprint has not widely rolled out VoLTE to allow calls and data at the same time. I live in a city of 1/2 million - largest in my state - and they only have LTE w/o VoLTE here. Boo! That so far has been an annoyance when I'm out and about and want to pull up an email message while on the phone w/ someone.

edit: ... but considering it is free other than taxes, I'm happy to deal with this minor inconvenience.

I can see next month's bill already on Sprint's site. For two lines, I will be charged $6.14 in fees and taxes:

Administrative Charge ($1.99 per line)
$3.98

Regulatory Charge
$0.80

Tele Sales Surcharge
$0.04

State Tele Sales Surcharge
$0.24

County Tele Sales Surcharge
$0.04

State 911 Tax
$1.02

State TRS Charge
$0.02

In my area Sprint service is good, and my current carrier is pretty poor. So I tried to buy this. I needed to buy new phones since my old were incompatible. After doing that, I tried to purchase this offer. I entered data and went through to the checkout, which wasn't too tough. During checkout, it displayed "there was an error, contact order support ..." . I did, and I am now on hold with the third different department, 58 minutes after i dialed them. Their systems don't work. What an incredible waste of time. I guess if you are on Verizon, and your phone is already compatible, u might try this. Otherwise, caveat emptor.
Update: they transferred me to a 4th department. On hold again.
Update: after 80 minutes, the 4th department told me that I cannot purchase this offer with my new phones, because they are not now activated with T-Mobile. And I cannot purchase them with my T-Mobile phones, because they are not compatible with Sprint. So I have wasted a morning and lots of money due to Sprint concealing these limits on the offer. No wonder everyone hates them.

I have a question regarding this deal. I'm willing to give them a try, but I need to buy a Sprint phone. Should coverage not be to my satisfaction, I'll cancel & go to Verizon.

What I'm wondering about is will the Sprint phone I get work on Verizon's network with a simple SIM card switch? I've never understood all the technical stuff with the different networks.
