works great

I used the square app and reader this weekend at a community garden event. They were selling marmalade from the orange trees, and there were 20+ artists selling paintings of the garden. I processed over $2000 worth of art and marmalade that wouldn't have been sold without Square. Totally easy, well thought out, and all the patrons thought it was fantastic to sign their names with their fingers on the screen. The $ has already been transferred to my bank from Square. Two thumbs up.

A high cut of your hard earned $$ to swipe a credit card and an even higher cut of your $$ when you can't swipe the card.

Plus a flat fee on top of the already high percentage they are taking!?

WTF!!

It's like they screw you AND make you pay for the condom.

What a bunch of greedy hipster doofases!

maybe you should look into a merchant credit card account. they don't charge you a dime

Seems like a nice, accessible service

By my calculations, it would make sense for us on up to $5k a month in transactions. Pretty cool idea using the headphone jack.

You could easily make a rogue app to grab data, but that is true with anyone you give your card to.

I would think it would be a great way for international users to be able to process US cards as domestic transactions with just a little extra leg work. That would save 2-3 points in total transaction cost.

How long have you used the square app/service before they raised your limit from $100/transaction & $700/week?

I got the reader early that morning in the post. I had the $100 per transaction limit, but my weekly limit was over $5000 for some reason. I had been working with their customer service department to get the reader in time for the event, so maybe that is why my weekly limit was higher.

2.9% seems high. If Square is trying to ATTRACT customers, the number should be lower. Otherwise, why switch? (aside from small business')

My question is:

1.) How does payment normally work? Like with a Micros system, do they take 2.9% and then give a portion to MC, Via, Amex? Is it 2.9% plus more?

2.) I thought Amex was the highest at 2.9%. Aren't the other card's costs lower?

I don't get what all of you are saying. Right now I have no way to accept a credit card for any transactions I'm doing. That is the point of this device and app to me. I didn't have the money to begin with, so now I will. I'm happy with it. Everyone else should chill out as you don't have to use it.

I

I always thought that Joaquin Phoenix's departure from movies was fake!

Now we REALLY know where he went - to found SquareUp.com

Go Joaquin!

Yeah, this will really streamline the process for that waiter or waitress who takes an extra swipe from my credit card on the way back to the kitchen... :(

Competition...

We need another player in this niche position in payment transactions as competition always benefits the consumer. I just hope Mophie offer non-merchants a reader too and with lower charges as I prefer their design and think the 'Square' looks rather silly in comparison.

This sort of 1-2-1 method of card payment will do wonders for black/grey market trade, drug dealers and individuals offering adult services.

Hmmm...

This is great, I can take payments for things sold via craigslist / garage sales, etc. I have zero need for a merchant account and paypals fees are higher than these without being able to physically swipe the card.

the rate you pay is based partly on risk. i've read that at one time years ago Amazon was paying 10% to take credit cards online. also depends if customers have to sign, etc

Amex is probably the highest and depending on your business type and voilume it may be much more than 2.9%. From what I saw on Square's site its 2.75% not 2.9% for swiped transactions plus the .15 transaction fee.

At my main business we pay pass through rates plus about .83 per transaction. Pass through is the exact rate MC & Visa charge the banks that is processing your transactions. This is by far the best rate I have ever found. However, you then have to start figuring other things like terminal costs to buy or lease or use a virutal terminal and those charges. Plus any monthly fee's, batch fee's, etc. While I may pay really low rates, the issue is that each and every card can have a different rate. Corportae cards have higher swipe rates than other cards. Rewards cards are higher than no rewards cards (Its the merchant that ends up paying for all of those rewards/airline miles not the credit card companies. Those costs are passed along).

I have a side businesss and Square would be ideal if I can get the max charge bumped up since my stuff can be in the $1000+ range. You have to remember there is $) cost for the equipment. $0 month fee's. No min usage/commitment etc. Its perfect for small volume. All of the companies like Square, Costs, Paypal, etc that charge flat rates are tryng to smooth the curve with a flat rate thus the 2.75% + .15 per transaction. Makes it easier to factor into your sales costs.

The swiper will only work with the square app. The data is encrypted and as such they explicitly state it will not work with a jailbroken phone to avoid security issues. Also, the whole point would be for the waiter or waitress to scan the card in front of you and allow you to complete the transaction with selecting the tip amount and then signing the card. Once accepted that is it.

What happens when there is a chargeback?

Handled just like any other credit card company. I think this is why they do a credit check and have the set max transaction amounts to limit their exposure. All transactions over $25.00 require a signature and you as the merchant are supposed to verify that to ensure its not fraud. If you do that you are pretty much covered for a chargeback. Swiping offers more protection than key entering it. The square system also emails the user with a receipt and indicates on a map where the transaction took place as well. From what I read there is also some type of photo identification for those customers that are also square users as well. So if I have a square account, I can register my credit cards with my photo and if I visit another square merchant my photo will appear when my credit card is swiped for verification. But again this only applies for all buyers/sellers in the square network and if they uploaded a photo.

Curious what the pricing is for the service. Also, this reader will not be free like the square ;). In regard to the end of your post. Those business types are phrohibited from the terms of service for square.

Artists and Musicians will love this.

as an artist who frequently has booths at art festivals and musician who plays shows and sells merch, i see a HIGH demand for this. Just signed up and can't wait to get my reader. The Artist/Musician market alone will gladly accept this app and device with open arms. I've been following square since it was first mentioned last year and have been anxiously awaiting the release for the iPhone. They never claimed to be for big companies, this is quite obviously for people like me and other "small" businesses. Not really sure why some are complaining and raining on the parade. Have any of you haters looked at the alternatives for small businesses in situations like mine? Other portable credit card systems charge monthly fees, percentage per transaction on top of having to purchase the reader/machine. Square is hardly "highway robbery".

Legit way to commit fraud

Call me paranoid, but this is just opening the door on pandora's box and exposing consumers to more credit card fraud? Offering fraudsters another legit way to obtain credit card scanners and process information? I understand how this is sort of helping out the small business owners, but the fees that these guys are offering are way too much.

Square does a credit check on you before you can accept credit cards

That's for a legitimate merchant.

What I'm fearful of is fraudulent use by an unscrupulous waiter/waitress that swipes your credit card on the sly on the way back to their actual register. It happens. In some locations with packed venues (Vegas, Miami, NYC, etc.) it happens hundreds of times a day. Later, if you notice the extra charges and dispute them, you'll eventually trace back the account to someone who had their identity stolen.

i imagine they ask you to put your zip code like the gas station pumps do

either way fraud is part of business and living

I wonder how long it'll be until someone gets a hacked one of these and starts copying people's CC info on to their phones...
