When I said this people on this site ripped me saying that their iPhone 4 never broke  buy a phone for the aesthetics and cover it with an ugly case....

The reality is that (and this isn't Apple's first rodeo with a glass phone), having a glass phone and having them break in real-world conditions all the time is bad press for Apple.

We don't have any idea how often these break in the wild until people have some time using them in the wild. As has already been pointed out repeatedly in this thread, the types of scenarios they use in the "tests" they use are ridiculous. The odds of there being more than one stabbing incident involving a direct connection with and iPhone where the person in the stabbing incident is more worried about damaging their phone than their body is quite low.

I'd like them to do realistic tests. Like, drops from a nightstand to a hardwood floor. Drops from a coat pocket onto a garage floor. Drops from a lap out of the car door onto the parking lot... drops from under your arm into a toilet... drops from the bathroom counter onto a tile floor... etc.

Let's be serious. This is how we break most of these devices.

Maybe the most extreme drop is from a 2-story stairwell or something. The stuff they come up with for those tests is hilarious.

Also... this is to sell insurance. Period.

So who else is carrying theirs naked, no skin, case, etc.? I at least always get a skin for the back, but this year I said F it. I have apple care and I plan on trading it in to Apple every year for a new one and they only care if it's functioning and has no cracks. So why not enjoy the phone the way it was meant to be enjoyed? Over the past few years I've become very careful with my phones, I've trained myself to grip it very tightly when putting it somewhere or putting it into my pocket, etc, and applecare is there for that small risk I'm going to drop it.

My case is quite lovely. I can even see my phone through it. :D

I think of it as training wheels for this one. Once I'm used to it and it's not brand new (and there's plenty of stock around), I'll probably ditch the case.

That's my plan after stock stabilizes. I still remember the years when they've not even had repair stock for phones. Once it is stable, I'm ditching the case. Why else do I pay for that AC+?

:D

But bezels are evil. The Verge told me so. As did everyone here who says the 8 and 8 Plus phones look so dated.

the scratch tests on the camera sapphire are interesting. It appeared to scratch at the same level hardness as the back glass.

All glass phone highly breakable. Got it. (Really didn't need a video to show me that).

What I would like to see is drop tests in various cases. I know lots of case makers claim "X" Ft. drop proof but then they don't show any proof. I doubt they even had an X to test out. So does anyone know of any drop videos with the X in a case. That is the kind of info that would be of value to me.

(BTW I didn't buy the X -- or any phone for aesthetics. I buy phones for their functionality. I can afford downtime, so just love to cover with those ugly cases).

Repairing the back glass is $549!!!

That's insane! That's half of a new 256 X!

If you break that on a cheaper 8, it's basically the cost of the entire phone!

Wow, you mean their are still people performing drop tests?...even though thats probably the least accurate way to figure out the break-ability of a device? It's 2017 people, find something more entertaining to do with your lives. It's impossible for a drop test to be an accurate representation of a devices durability. Why? Because every phone will drop on a different angle, surface, etc. You would literally have to do this in a controlled environment and it would have to be dropped exactly the same and hit the surface of the ground the exact same. Even that doesn't work anymore, now that we have phones with curved screen.

Where is bend-gate? I don't care about a 6 foot drop, but what happens when put in the back pocket, as nearly everyone does?

So all of them can get their screens repaired with apple care + after doing these tests?

I have a feeling the logic board is fixed to the back so when they replace the rear they're replacing it and the charging coil.

Couldn’t you still break the phone even with the case? I’m sure it won’t break as easily without the case, but still... depending on the case...there’s a limit how much impact it can take.

The phone consists of the front and the back, so naturally repairing the back costs half the price of the phone. Apple are kind and generous, so if you break the front they give you a lovely deal and don’t even charge half the price of the phone.

This just in: your vehicles windshield will likely break in the event of an accident. Along with crumpling steel.
How will we live with these fragile machines?

There are hundreds of case drop test videos on youtube. Pick a brand, add droptest to the search criteria and you will get more than you probably want.

How does anyone drop a phone from 6ft? That person must be at least 9ft tall considering most people use their phones near their chest level.

The glass on iPhone X breaks?? I'm so dissappointed :(

I'm going to return the phone.

That's weird. I've seen a few tests suggest the glass is tougher than on the iPhone 8.
