Ok so I just ran a few "Boot" tests, and something doesn't feel right. Once the Apple logo shows up on boot, the little spinning circle takes about 15 spins, and then it finally boots. Does that sound right at all? :(

Also, total boot time now from Apple logo to full desktop is about 35-40 seconds. That DEFINTELY cannot be normal for a SSD.

Someone help?

I don't boot often, but I do notice that it's a pretty variable process. With my SSD, most of the time it takes like 1/4 of a gear spin before that screen goes away. Randomly it will take a lot longer even if I haven't installed any software. Wouldn't worry about it too much.

Yeah but 1/4 a spin is not the same as 15 spins.

That screen is there for about 35 seconds before it goes away, then another couple seconds to get to a fully loaded desktop.

A lot of people are saying that the boot screen shouldn't be up for that many spins. Most are saying 1 or 2 spins, 5 max, so that's what I'm trying to diagnose and see if there is a fix for it.

Update: It's fixed! :D I just did a clean install of OS X and am transferring stuff over instead of doing a "migration". Now boot times from Apple logo to full desktop is 14.7 seconds. THAT'S more like it!

OK - here are my boot times (best of 2 runs)

Button press to Apple Logo - 8 seconds

Apple Logo to Appearance of Dock - 14 seconds

Total time from finger on button to Dock - 22 seconds

My three-day old MBP is a 17" i7 HR Glossy with 8 GB memory and the 512 GB SSD unit.

No this little parlor trick is not why I sprung for the SSD - but I gotta say it ain't half bad !!

I got mine today too. All I can say is wow. Boots up Photoshop in about 4 seconds, boots up OS X in 10-14seconds. I think I'm in love...

The Intel 80GB drive is only $230 or so at Microcenter. If you don't load all your music and photos onto the machine or use a VM you can easily get by.

I have Office 2008, iWork, Xcode, Netbeans, Mamp, SmartSVN, Navicat, Araxis Merge all on mine and still have 40GB left!

I can't justify spending $500 to get the 160GB right now. I have an opti-bay but after looking inside the machine I have doubts on how easy it would be to get that installed. Also see the thread on the poor person who tried to install and stripped the screw head and is kind of stuck. A little nervous now.

I put my 500GB drive into a $12 usb case which I have connected to an iMac 27". I symlink to that drive for photos and music. No reason have that on the SSD.

All works great. 1 to 2 bounces to start things. Could never go back. Give up the space and go for the speed. You'll never regret it.

Give up the space and go for the speed.

I recently upgraded my 250GB to 256GB SDD, so didn't need to give up any space :)

Yes, it's fast. Apps launch in one bounce or two. Smaller apps that are already cached are instant. Booting is much improved. Nice for when you use BootCamp and reboot frequently.

I just ran a quick test and was getting 256MB/sec reads consistently.

I'll probably wait until year's end or early next year to get a SSD.

By then I expect that i'll be able to get a 160GB SSD for $250.
I'd love to take my ~user and put that on an external drive. It would be really nice to have USB 3.0 next year so that a simple external drive or array would have a bunch of data and be very fast but not quite as fast as the internal SSD. The system would scream.

Yeah I really wanted to wait too, but my previous hard drive was giving me weird sounds and it was slow at loading anything, so I thought I'd make the jump now. And I got this SSD for $300, which was the lowest I could find for a SSD of this speed that had built in garbage collection. I'll be good for a year or two before I have to upgrade. :D

This has me drooling. I'm considering replacing my boot drive with a 64GB SSD and then putting a 500GB in Optibay. I assume that I could put my home folder and documents and such on the 500GB. Is that correct?

You could definitely do that. I would just keep the Applications folder on the SSD that way it loads all your programs really quick. Then everything else is on the HD just for storage.

[sarcasm]
Switch MBP on, go make a coffee, come back and it's ready to go... :p

Wow just saved myself £1000 for a 500Gb SSD. I can't really think what I would do with the 15+ seconds I would save myself on boot times
[/sarcasm]

SSD's are the future for sure, but not just yet. In 5 years time the prices will match those of sata drives now with regards to £/Capacity.

I think I can hold on until then :)
