Now that the MX100 is out, I wonder how it stacks up to the 840 EVO. They seem to go neck to neck but I wonder if Samsung is worth the extra $50 premium.

The Evo 840 is better than the MX100. It's more of a $20 premium if you look for coupons online.

http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Samsung-840-Evo-250GB-vs-Crucial-MX100-256GB/1594vs2317

I ordered one this week and it was between those two...chose the 840 since it was only $20 more, and reviews were great

"For typical desktop use including email, office documents and web browsing the MX100 is a great choice but power users should look elsewhere. Comparing the Samsung 840 EVO and MX100 shows that, for a marginal price premium, the Evo wins hands down on raw performance."

Some folks have said you can't have 1TB SSDs in USB3 enclosures as the power consumption is too great or unstable.

I have run Blackmagic for most of the day on my Samsung 840 EVO 1TB setting in a Inateck enclosure. Zero problem. The enclosure did get warm.

Anyone had an experience where the SSD was unstable via USB 3?

SanDisk Extreme Pro SSDs announced at Computex

10-year warranty

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8110/computex-2014-sandisk-announces-extreme-pro-ssd
Seems that these drives are the current king of the hill. Very nice. Somewhat more expensive that the Samsung 840 EVO, so the question is if it is worth it? At least 10 years of warranty is a big thing! But 699$ (Amazon) for the 960 Gb drive.. Ouch..

I'll wait until Samsung announces their next generation drives, but I am closing to picking up one of these Sandisk Extreme Pro Overdrive Acceleration Forcefield Maximus drives for my 2011 iMac.. :)

I'd be interested to see how well those Sandisk Extreme Pro drives work in a Mac, as it appears that some people had problems with the Sandisk Extreme II, which was mentioned earlier in the thread.

Which is a pity, as the performance is excellent.

Thanks Alex for linking that post, after reading that review on Anandtech I was wondering the same. There was no mention of any delayed sleep awake issues with MBPs anywhere in the article if I remember correctly and the test bench had a windows system.

Did not experience any delay in waking up from sleep with Extreme Pro 960GB installed in Late-2011 MBP 17" 10.8.5

The Samsung SSD 850 Pro has officially been announced. Looks like it even runs circles around the Sandisk Extreme Pro (Super Mega Edition Evolution), although at a much higher MRSP. Anandtech review. Techreport review.

If it gets down to 600$ quickly, this is where I'll go. 8) Otherwise, I think I pick the EVO instead.

I have a 2012 rMBP with the 256GB SSD, ran out of disk space.

Bought the transcent 960 GB SSD installed it installed a new version of OSX.

Working great and faster then the 256 SSD

Do msata adapters paired with an msata ssd work with rmbp? Specifically a June 2012 15".

From what I'm looking at it could work out cheaper to use an msata ssd with the adapter. If they work. Rmbp will be arriving Monday with 256gb but might want to upgrade it.

I don't think there is an msata adapter that can interface between the sata interface on the rMBP logic board and an msata drive. If you know of one please post a link.

In any case, even if the required adapter exists, there might not be enough space in the rMBP to install the msata drive.

whats the best/cheapest ssd option for a retina pro? looking for at least 512

whats the best/cheapest ssd option for a retina pro? looking for at least 512

For 2012 retina pro, these are the options that I know about....

* Apple OEM SSD from eBay or some other parts reseller.
* OWC Mercury Aura Pro: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Retina_2012
* Transcend JetDrive: http://www.transcendusa.com/Apple/jetdrive/

Or use an external solution, such as the Lacie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 connected SSD (not cheap).
https://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10621

There are some less expensive Thunderbolt options, but in this case, 256GB might not be enough for some people.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/H...gged-usb-30-thunderbolt-series-ssd-hard-drive

The OEM option would give you Trim enabled by default and there shouldn't be any compatibility issues in future OS X releases.

I also have a 2012 13" MacBook Pro, non retina. I put a Samsung 840 ssd in there but never did the whole trim enabler thing, I have only just been reading up on it. Should I enable trim? Would I see an improvement in performance as it's already a lot faster than when using hdd

Quick Confirmation re: Late 2013 13" Retina MBP

1. Is it still the case that only OWC has SSD's that fit properly?
2. Apple support said that changes to the newer MBPs make it much harder for "Amateurs" to swap the drive...said I should take to a service provider. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Further re: upgrade SSD for late 2013 rMBP

So I just spoke with OWC which told me they have no SSD for Late 2013 rMBP. So I have now found ZERO alternatives for upgrading my 128GB SSD....seems very strange. Anyone have any thoughts that might help?

I didn't read the whole thread, but I'd highly recommend the Seagate 1TB hybrid SSD/HD. It's much larger than any SSD and offers very close performance. I have on installed in my MBP and I couldn't be happier.

There are 1TB SSDs available from multiple manufacturers....
