Man.

Over the weekend I bought a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD from Micro Center for 179$ and a 16GB Ram kit for 79$ because I felt they both were amazing deals.

I installed both in my Early 2011 13" Macbook Pro w/ a 2.3Ghz Core i5 and MAN, this thing is fast.

This SSD replaced a Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid drive that treated me well but is nothing like an SSD.

With that said, I enabled TRIM using the trim enabler app and am getting 250MBS Write and 500mbps Read.

Is this what most people are getting too with this drive? In the week i've had the drive and have not had a single issue with the M4.

Do I need to worry about the SSD health degrading with a Hybrid drive?

Yes that is what I am also getting.

Just bought the Seagate Momentus XT lol. Could you elaborate more on your experience with the drive? I'm coming from a 7200 drive.

My Experience was good overall. I had the 500Gb 1st gen model and had it installed in a 13" MBP early 2011 model with 8gb of ram.

The drive never failed me or caused me any grief. After it gets to know your favorite apps and after a few reboots, it starts to launch our favorite apps in the dock pretty instantly.
And my system booted in 24-28 seconds or so.

Of Course my SSD is faster however because of the fast app launching of my momentus XT and quicker boot times, I wasn't as blown away with the SSD speeds as I would have been coming from a 5400RPM standard drive.

Where the SSD excels is in file transfers and such. Also every app launches instantly instead of just my favorite.

IF you need a lot of storage and dont want to buy a huge SSD for price concerns then I highly recommend the Momentus XT however if you dont need much space, then a 256GB SSD for 179$ is a great deal too.

Thanks for your review. I was seriously considering the the M4, but I need the space , my iTunes library is 150GB alone. Hopefully i'll be able to afford a high capacity SSD one day lol.

Ha I have the same problem. On my 500Gb Drive I only had 35Gb left so switching to 256Gb was an adjustment.

I too have a 100+ GB Itunes library however I consolidated it down and then decided to pay 9.99$ a month for Spotify.

I have a 65Gb iPhoto Library too however I consolidated it down to 30Gb.

After all that, I have 80Gb of storage left on the SSD and am pretty happy with my set up.
I did buy a MyBook Live to put all my files on it and be able to acccess them anywhere in the world and because it supports itunes sharing, I am able to play the tracks from the network that aren't on Spotify or My MBP.

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro 15, L2011;

As i understood a SSD Sata III in the optibay would not work is it correct ?
Will an SSD Sata II work fine ? If yes which SSD Sata II you suggest ?

A Sata III SSD would work fine although it will run at Sata II speeds as I believe that is the link speed for the Optical drive.

But my Macbook Pro support SATA III in the optibay, but is not reliable, is possible to put a SATA III SSD and set it to SATA II speed to make it reliable?

Well, i read it here :D

http://blog.macsales.com/11895-2011-macbook-pro-sata-problems-resolved

Following this seems that SSD in optical bay can go only as SATA II, so i need or to put a SSD SATA II or to put a SATA III and somehow set it to SATA II speed.

Am i correct ?
Is there a way to set the SSD in this way ?

SSD don't have jumpers like some drives so I'm not aware of anyway to downgrade the speed but that doesn't mean there isn't. In light of that article, I would stick to a Sata II SSD for the optibay. It will still offer excellent performance.

OK Thanks, any advice on a SATA II SSD ?

I've read that MBP 5,1 (mid 2009) have a design flaw with the ribbon and motherboard. Is this correct? (I googled MBP and Intel 330 series)

Also, from the first page, was wondering would Intel's 330 series be a decent match for my laptop. I don't need it to uber quick.

Can someone please, please, please help me sort this out.
There are so many SSD topics but I can't find the right answer.

I have a mid 2010 MBP 13" and ordered a Samsung 830 26GB.
I have an optibay ready to be used so when my SSD arrives tomorrow its rock and roll.

Now comes the tricky part;
do I put my SSD in my optibay or main HDD spot?

Since the 2010 model doesn't have Sata 6Gb/s it should not make a difference right?
I currently have a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB hybrid drive and I'm not sure if this drive supports build in motion sensor. Since the main HD spot supports sms I'm was thinking about putting the SSD in de optibay.

Does it mather if I put my SSD in de optibay?
Will sleep and hibernate still work while my OS X is being booted from the optibay?
Does sms work only in the HD spot or is it build into the unibody?

Can someone please help me with clear answers?
I hate pulling apart my baby 10 times if I can keep it to 1 or 2.

Hi all,

If I could ask for some advice please. I own a mid 2010 MBP, 2.4GHz, C2D - upgraded to 8GB RAM.
I intend to purchase a Crucial M4 256GB SSD. Looking at the options on Crucial's website, this model is listed as guaranteed compatible with my machine at €213:
http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=37670C9FA5CA7304

Searching online, I've seen the following, which comes in about €25 cheaper:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004W2JL2A/ref=pe_207311_30922351_pe_epc_dt4

I'm just wondering if this is compatible with my mac? This may be a stupid question, and the price difference quite small in the overall scheme of things, but I'm just not sure if the drive listed on Amazon is compatible.

As far as I can see both have SATA III capability, though I know my mac only has SATA II.

Thanks.

Those are the same drives. So Yes buy the one from Amazon. I bought my M4 from Micro Center for $179 USD so you can definitely find it pretty cheap.

If its made by Crucial, is an M4 model and is the same storage capacity then its the same drive and you should buy what ever is cheaper as long as its not used.

Thank you, I appreciate the help. I figured there was no difference, but wanted to make sure.

Thanks again.
