I replaced the SSD in my MacBook Pro 13 2014 using a special adapter. Now I have a Samsung 970 EVO 500GB SSD. I wanted to format it and reinstall mac OS. During boot, I pressed Option-Command-R. My further actions are shown in the photos. However, when you click on the "Erase" button, nothing happens, the cursor returns to "Name". What am I doing wrong?

I would try making a USB installer and try booting from that in order to erase the internal disk. That is usually the way I do it when trying to erase the boot drive.

I've watched a lot of videos on YouTube regarding reinstalling macOS and no one has a problem like me. Maybe I have a locked SSD.

I have a 2015 MBP 15 that I installed a 2TB NVMe in. When looking for SSD drives for the 2015 MBP and 2013 Mac Pro, I remember there were some popular ones that were giving people trouble. I ended up buying a 2TB Inland Premium, which is the same drive as several other brands that were known to work well.

I'm pretty sure there was a large thread here on MR (possibly the Mac Pro section) that talked about the NVMe adapters and which drives to avoid. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I kind of recall the Samsung 970 being one of the drives that were giving people trouble - but I am not 100% sure.

I will try to create a bootable USB and format the SSD. Maybe I should format the volume? What is the difference between formatting an SSD and a volume?

If it's a new drive, you need to erase the ENTIRE drive.

My guess is what someone above mentioned -- a hardware incompatibility issue.

This is a good thread with tons of info.

Samsung 970 Evo is noted as being ok. I was thinking of the Samsung 970 Evo Plus that had been an issue. This also seems to have been resolved with a firmware update to the 970 Evo Plus.

Perhaps it is just an issue with your specific SSD that is not working correctly.

Hope you figure it out.
