Hi again all. The posts have been great! Thanks to everyone for pitching in. Given all the responses, I've decided to make a quick summary of what we have so far. Here are the averages, by brand, of SSDs for which we have at least two samples. Only data for the 4k random read/write is shown. I hope this helps!

Hello MR,

Just weighing in with my scores for a mid-2010 base 13" with an intel x25v (dont see many of them around these parts) installed to my optibay.

I did find that the xbench results fluctuated quite a bit. But this one seemed to be about right.

I have a G.Skill Titan, which started off in an Asus C90S and was transferred to my Mid 2009 Unibody (5,5). This is the machine in my signature. This has been in use for about 14 months now. 128GB.

Not bad at all...

Actually, that's pretty bad for an SSD.

Have you thought about running a secure erase on the drive to bring it back to its original performance?

Didn't bother to kill Safari, etc. while running. Interestingly, I notice that sometimes when I access a directory in finder, it pauses for a second or three before giving a listing... common?

Hi,

2010 i7 "15 MBP

Crucial C300 256MB SSD (52gb free).
I've been using the SSD for about one week now.

I dunno how you do it :(, I have a C300 as well on a i7 15" with 8GB and my results look really poor. I use the disk a lot though and have only 32Gb free.
Wish there was a way to speed it up again

If your SSD is too slow it might be too full.
The firmware tries keeping performance up and that is more and more difficult the less free space is available. I would guess filling it up more than 75% is not a good idea and less is better.
Sandforce drives keep aside a quite huge space you cannot use so performance is good and also reliability. Most consumer drives do not do that.

That is why I won't buy one until the 256GB are cheap enough.

Also running some garbage collection tool might help, if the SSD has no special firmware that takes care of this.

I just ordered a G2 Intel X25-M 160GB, and I'm very happy to see that the overall disk scores for xbench are so high. I've been reading reviews for a long time and finally decided to bite the bullet and order one. Should be here in the next couple days or so. :D

For all the C300 owners in the list, Crucial just released a new Firmware:

0002 256GB Crucial RealSSD C300 Part #:CTFDDAC256MAG-1G1 Release Notes guide — firmware[X] Release Date: 5/4/2010

Change Log:

* Improved Power Consumption
* Improved TRIM performance
* Enabled the Drive Activity Pin (Pin 11)
* Improved Robustness due to unexpected power loss
* Improved data management to reduce maximum write latency
* Improved Performance of SSD as it fills up with data
* Improved Data Integrity

Note: This requires a Low Level Format to the SSD which will erase any data on the drive.
Please ensure that your data is backed up prior to performing the Firmware Update. We are hopeful that future Firmware revisions/updates will not be destructive.

I never did an SSD firmware upgrade on a MacbookPro, it seems like we need to format the drive.

Specs in signature. Toshiba/Apple 256GB SSD

Go Apple!
