for personal use all my mac minis boot from external thunderbolt drives.
I have 3 mac minis. a 2011 a 2012 and a 2014.
For builds that I used to sell I liked to make big fusion's. both the 2011 and the 2012 can make 4tb fusion drives. using a 2tb samsung ssd and a 2tb hdd. pretty much the best internal setup for a mac that is easy to do.
I can't write Apple f@#$@'d up all new desktops making it next to impossible to have 4tb internal storage.
BUT THE FACT IS THEY DID JUST THAT.
