Alright well I think I just went back on my decision. First of all, I will probably be only doing websurfing, papers (word), aperture photo editing, itunes are dabbling in Final Cut Pro and VM/Bootcamp. I don't think that what I will be doing is enough to warrant an SSD. Having really fast boots and app load times would be cool, but it really isn't necessary. I'm typing on a 6 year old windows PC that takes about 5 minutes to be up and running. I think I truly don't need it just yet, hopefully prices will fall within the next two years when they start to go mainstream and I can do an opti-bay.

So how fast is the boot time on a 2.2 15 MBP with the 500GB 7200RPM drive?

Do you need to have your disc drive with you all the time? If not take the disc drive out and put a large HDD in there and still go with a SSD.

Since you said its only $90 to upgrade that means your going with the 128GB drive. I was in your exact same shoes when I ordered my new MBP 15" 2.0, I didnt get the apple SSD because I talked myself out of it, using the exact same reasons your giving. As time went by though my desire to get a SSD grew and I broke down and got a intel 320 SSD 128GB because they seemed to have the best reliability and I must say the speed is AMAZING! If I had to do it all over again I would get a apple SSD so that TRIM is enabled and does not effect read/write speeds and then put a HDD in the optical bay.

Yeah, this is the way to go for most people (i.e. those that want speed, need space, and don't need an optical drive all that often). You can pick up a $25 USB DVD burner or for the same price get the Superdrive look-alike from MaxUpgrades for those few times that you need to use a disc.

if I do it I will for sure the the apple ssd beause I want the trim and warrenty for it. I'm scared to do opti because I don't want to void my warrenty and/or break my laptop. Although I could wait awhile with the ssd if I really need a hdd in the opti, ill rarely use the superdrive. The decision is tough.

Doing the optibay mod is simple plug-and-play. If you can swap the hard drive, you can do the optibay. Also, if you need warranty work, you can swap the Superdrive back in 5 minutes.

My 3 week old sad failed...and I started looking through all the other brands to choose a replacement. I gave up..seems like the failure rate is still way too high to bother.

I bought an inexpensive moment us xt, which is not s fast..but it made a tangible difference in app launch and startup times.

I'm notsaying it's impossible to get a reliable ssd, I'm saying for me it's not worth the hassle ATM.
