Regardless its an issue that you would submit via the bug reporter, which wasn't done until the end of November. Otherwise Apple could fairly assume it wasn't a major issue for people ;).

I guess that's just a different opinion. In my view, if you take a feature and remove it, there should be a good reason.

And yes, saying "it's confusing" or "it gets in the way" are good reasons. This feature was neither of those. People who wanted to ignore it could very easily do so. It wasn't in anyone's way.

So I don't think they should have known it was a problem in November. They should have known it was a bad idea the instant they did it!

actually, i like the current Stacks icon - but then i do mainly use it for quick access to my downloads folder

but it's nice now that we've got the choice

Users are also given the option of displaying a traditional Folder icon instead of the "stack" of icons in the Dock.

Not a lot of people seem to be commenting on this one, but to me this is HUGE. Take my Home folder for instance, I like having that in the dock. Guess what? The first folder alphabetically in my Home directory is my personal "Applications" folder. So guess what icon shows up in the dock? I keep mistaking that for my REAL Applications folder; it bugs the heck out of me!

Glee! This is one of the things that I did not like about Leopard. I'm glad to have the list view back. But is this a global setting or can you set it on an individual basis? I would like my applications folder to be in list view but the downloads folder to be in fan view.

frankenstein monsters begone from my dock!

this is great news! what's not clear to me from the picture is whether the full hierarchical functionality in the list view is restored. I must say this is what I miss the most.

Here's something that bugs me.

When you command click a folder in the dock to open it in the Finder, it doesn't actually put you IN the folder.

So say you have your pictures folder in the dock, you command click it and it opens in finder in column view, if you start typing the name of an image you want to find, it will instead select the file/folder in your HOME folder that is closest to what you typed. It's unbelievably annoying.

If this is just a seed its unlikely to be ready for Christmas, MWSF is as soon as we could see this.

whiners rejoice!

It's nice that the incredibly small population of whiners who used dock folders in Tiger and were unhappy with stacks functionality replacing that, are finally getting their whiny way about this (I guess).

The real "core functionality" of Stacks that was removed however, was to do with how they are created. Specifically the use of "smart folder" stacks to make them intelligently display files.

So my question to the original discoverer is:

Is this just a sop to the whiners by adding list view, or has Apple actually added back in the functionality that would make it worth our while to create anything more than the two default stacks?

Or in other words, can we make stacks that have any brains at all, or are we stuck with the dumb hierarchical menu functionality only?

The cynics said there was no way apple would ever fix this before 10.6.

Nice to see that they were wrong.

Hopefully this is an indication of Apple listening to user feedback more - I was pleasantly surprised that some of the major user complaints about Logic 8 have already been addressed in 8.0.1.

Celebrating about something we should have had?

Well, yeah, but I thought they ATE my chocolate bar by now!

I like how we're celebrating about something which we should have had months ago.
It's like thanking someone for a chocolate bar which they stole from you 3 months ago :)

This is great news! As I don't really have any remaining "issues" with Leopard myself, it will now be the "perfect" OS for me. Awesome how Apple listens to it's users. Considering in the grand scheme of things how few people most likely really complained about this anyway. Let's hope it's 100% true!

This is good news. I didn't realize how much I used that view in Tiger until I upgraded to Leopard

This was one of the major things that me me downgrade to Tiger, if true and they also fix the permissions issue. I'll be more than happy to upgrade

Weird. I'm not on my laptop right now but I think the command that pops up is "Show In Finder" not "Open In Finder" which means it opens Finder to the folder that houses the item you clicked on, showing you where it's located. That would explain the behavior you're seeing.

Someone posted a video the other day of how Stacks originally worked in Leopard.

It seems that it wasn't supposed to be a replacement for a folder-in-the-dock. Instead, it was a new feature where any files and apps from any folders could be stacked together in a single spot on your dock, in addition to folders. I guess during testing, though, Apple decided it was confusing that stacks looked like docked folders, but behaved differently; and in the end, they ditched the real Stacks and renamed docked folders as Stacks, copying over some of the visual similarities and eliminating the most useful features of docked folders.

We went from:
Stacks + Folders

to:
Folders with special effects and missing features
(but they called it Stacks and thought we wouldn't notice)

It's nice that Apple's finally restoring docked folders the way we like them, but it's a little unfortunate that they felt superficially mimicking a failed feature (stacks) to save face (after all, they'd already been marketing Stacks) was better then just eliminating it or coming up with a better solution.

Command-clicking folders in dock

Hmmm.... yeah, I can see your point there. But the flip-side of that argument is, I might also have folders in my dock for network file shares and the like. Maybe I just need to quickly open up a couple of them on my screen so I can see what's there, and start moving/copying files from a 3rd. local folder to them? It would be JUST as annoying if the last folder I click is always the one I'm *in* - in that scenario.

(My preferred behavior there would be making my local folder active, and expecting that not to change just because I'm opening other ones I want to use as "targets" for my copy or move operation.)

I guess what I'm saying is, I don't know if Apple would make a change like the one you suggest - because it's not "universally preferable" for it to work that way.

Leopard.1 had 2 ways to view folders in the Dock.

Leopard.2 now has 3 ways to view folders in the Dock.

Why the animosity? You just hate having choices? Does the fact that you can buy Photoshop OR Photoshop Elements bug you too?

I commented on it (on the first page). I couldn't agree more! I really dislike the silly icon behaviour. My Home folder is not a textmate project! My applications folder is not an address book. I'm glad sanity will prevail over my stacks :D

I am eagerly awaiting this one... hope it comes along sooner rather than later. Macworld maybe? Or earlier?

Consensus on the concept that Apple withholds little, seemingly simple and obvious tweaks/enhancements to ensure a steady (aka: desirable) stream of OS updates?

Honestly, to not have an element like List View - something that has structurally been part of the Mac user interface for (correct me if I am wrong) 20 years now - in Stacks seems either unacceptably absent or annoyingly intentional (per my above speculation).
Either way, W. T. F.

It's like a DVD player with no Menu button. Then, months later, the DVD manufacturer releases an updated remote that offers "Now with Menu Button!"
