I've posted on this topic several times on this forum hoping for some new rumors telling of the mythical reemergence and rebirth of the aging 30" display.

Alas, i've recieved no such lofty insight. But, this particular thread has helped me work through some of my hypotheses regarding Apple R&D. My conclusion? I think that since apple is eliminating the 24" iMac line but keeping the 24" display, i suspect they will NOT release a 27" display. When it's all said and done, I expect Apple to have:

1) 21.5" iMac,
2) 24" display,
3) 27" iMac,
4) 30" LED MATTE display

......Other than you wishing for a Matte display (which you've thoughtfully capitalized) other than a $50 on the high end macbook pros for a matte option, what makes you think Apple would even consider a Matte product?

Also, they can't release a 30" LED Display until it is reasonably priced to source a 30" LED display - I think the iMac was originally wished to be a 30" iMac, but they were forced to go down to 27" because of the lack of availability of 30" LED parts.

Just my guesses.

I don't find it unreasonable to expect Apple to produce their highest end display for their highest end user (at least those concerned with realistic photo presentation) in the best (and the most professionally requested) method available - MATTE.

I've heard the "cost" argument before and up until a few days ago, i was drinking the Kool-Aid as well. But, if Apple can profitably release a 27" LED iMac for under $2000, then surely they can release a 30" DISPLAY for under $2000 (or maybe a little over).

"Lack of LED parts" isn't it just more of the same parts that make up a 27"?

of course,.. i'm just a photographer... i could be wrong.. i usually am.
