Agreed, the concept is correct and the intention is correct even if the method is flawed. I've worked 12 hour days and only got up to hit the head. I do see the value in what the intention is. I was just disillusioned by the execution.

This explains that family of overweight people with no elbows I saw at the Apple store, all returning their watches.

I got out of bed this morning, let the dog out, sat in my office chair for a few hours of work, got lunch, and sat in my chair until now.

Apple Watch is telling me that I have stood for 7 of my 12 hour goal as of 2:45pm.

*yawn* I run 3-5 times a week depending on the weather and have a regular gym routine, I think this gimmick won't be missed. Ty for your opinion though.

Well for me 2days a week for the gym to strengthen my core, and one spinning class. 150miles of outdoor cycling by the time I get to Sunday. And when my watch say it's time to stand and move a little, I just do it.

The way I see it, is that it's a added bonus for my health. So if you are that active it shouldn't be that big of a deal to stand and move for a minute Lol.

Geeze, guys, it's a a recommendation. Either do it or don't, it's up to you. The reminder works well. If you choose to game it, that's your business.

Until Apple does something about the HR sensor their fitness stuff is kind of negated. The HR is central to many of the fitness numbers. If it does not work . . . . .

It does work for me all the time, if you go to the fitness App and select the work out of your choice. And the watch is on your wrist properly, it will give you an accurate reading most of the time. the only time I get inaccurate reading is when weight lifting.

Doing squats and any lower body workout the HR works fine. But upper body workouts like biceps curls etc, the HR tend to give an inaccurate reading. But this is not a problem when I use my polar chest strap HR with AW when weight lifting.

Apple will get it all workout in the future updates though.

After about a week it seems to be pretty accurate. I think it learns as it collects more data from you. I was having an issue with it counting about 100 calories for a 40-minute car ride on a highway. Now it's counting about 30, which sounds reasonable since you are slightly moving your feet and hands. So since there hasn't been a software update, I think it is a lot like Faces in Photos and learns as you use it more.

I'm not "gaming" it, but as I understand it, it thinks that my goal is to stand for 12h a day and thinks that I have stood for 7? That's crazy on both counts. Or am I misunderstanding it?

They don't mean stand for 12 hours, and it's not saying you've stood for 7 hours.

What they mean is that the recommendation is that you get up and stand with some movement, at least once an hour, for 12 separate hours of the day. It's meant to be a break from sitting too long.

At 10 minutes before the hour, if it hasn't detected that you've stood/moved yet for that hour, it will remind you.

Yes, you can "trick" it by putting your arm straight down at your side even while sitting, but that's not typical behavior of most people. I find it to be a helpful reminder at work. When I see it, I will get up from my desk and walk around for a bit, till it dings saying I've hit another stand towards my goal, and I'll sit back down.

You only need to stand and move 60 seconds each hour to get credit. What's happened to you is that you've moved in a way that the watch thinks you've done that for 7 of the 12 hours. Maybe you got up to pee or fetch something - that's enough to do it.

Ok, I had been wondering why the apple watch was not giving me credit for standing up when I was. I narrowed it down to when I was holding my coffee in the watch hand. Odd? Yes.... 100% of the time if my watch arm was at a 90 degree angle I did not receive credit.

Ok grey matter kicked in, yesterday and today when I got the stand up alert and I was sitting I did not stand, I let my arm hang down over the arm of the chair. I got standing credit while sitting, every time.

In fact the watch has 0 clue if you stand, it only knows if your arm is hanging down towards the floor.

For all of you unlucky sods that hold a book, notebook, drink, paper, anything in your watch hand, you will not get standing credit, you may even get asked to stand even though you are already standing.

it's not a joke... it's there to remind you to keep active, sure you can trick it but you're only cheating yourself. It's like people who set there move rings to 200cals just to get achievements. You're only cheating yourself. The health features are available to help motivate / assist you with being fit... how you use it is up to you.

LOL. My car, my house, heck, the laptop I'm typing on all cost more than that, and I don't expect any of them to be able to tell if I'm standing up or not. The cost of a device does not determine its functionality.

At the end of the day, the watch is a tool that you can choose to use to improve your health/life/whatever, or not. If you choose to take the reminders and do something with your body, you'll see the benefit of that. If you don't, well, then you won't. There's no amount of crying about how it works that's going to change that.

None of those things are designed to do that. If your car radio didn't work, you sure wouldn't just think "Oh well". Your car might still work but one of the functions doesn't work and you would rightly be dissatisfied.

Cost does determine functionality - that's why high end goods and technology have more and better functions.

Actually the standing issue is software, so it can be fixed.

Don't let it be a gimmick, if you know how to fool it then work around it. It's only there to benefit you.

Definitely agree, but my main issue is that I'm not trying to fool it. If I am genuinely wanting a quick reminder to have a little walk each hour and I happen to be sat in a certain way I won't be reminded as the Watch thinks I'm already stood up.

If you cheat it, fair enough. I just want it to work correctly.

This makes much more sense.. Thanks. :)

I do get up frequently to do whatever, so maybe it is accurate. I have the notifications disabled, however.

I'm guessing that Apple Watch didn't like coffee in your hand. believe coffee isn't health and won't count for that coffee. that got to be a real smart watch LOL :)

i LOVE this feature. i've read all the articles about how bad it is to sit for too long. i have a desk job and have been know to sit on my butt for several hours without getting up! that's not good for me!

i've tried other gimmicks (set my fitbit to alarm every hour during the day) but for whatever reason i ignored those alarms. i workout every morning but that doesn't negate the sitting.

i've totally embraced the whole stand for a minute every hour! i get up at 4 a.m. and by the 3 o'clock hour i have my circle complete! but i don't stop there. my goal each day is to get a line for every hour i'm awake. since it doesn't notify me at 10 til the hour once i've gotten my 12, i set up my own repeating reminder for the remaning hours in case i get lazy at home.

i love the achievements and i love completing my circles!

however, if you don't like them... don't use them! to each his or her own!

I'm to the point now where I watch the time and if I see it getting close to ten till, I go ahead and get up. I'm also using the reminder as an exercise regimen. Why only stand for a minute, when you can do something for 5 minutes. Those five minutes add up. I'm actually getting in an hour of good weights/non-impact aerobics every day now, all thanks to that silly stand reminder.

It is what you make of it.

I take these reminders seriously because sitting for a long period of time is extremely unhealthy, no matter how much exercise you do afterwards. I count the steps until I receive credit, it's always around 50 steps.
That's not too hard, isn't it?

It actually has nothing to do with the steps. It's all about the position of the watch. Your watch arm dangling at your side gives you credit. If you hold something in your watch hand at a 90 degree (horizontal to the ground) you most likely will not receive credit. (I continued working while standing is how I noticed, I hold my tablet in my watch hand)

However the point isn't the credit as much as the reminder to stand. (As was pointed out to me) :)
