The thing with 120hz is that when you "enable" it it looks great - for few days. Then you get used to it and forget. And then someone hands you a 60hz phone and all of a sudden you see the difference very clearly.
Or one could be like me: You acknowledge the difference and can see the difference… and just don’t care.

So you realise that comes with the trade-off in weight? And the 16 Pro is already overweight. I have the 15 Pro only was ok to buy it because it got lighter from the 14 Pro. I wouldn’t want an iPhone even 1g heavier.

And you’re asking 20% every year, do you realise what you’re asking? That is simply unrealistic.
Battery tech R&D is ongoing. I am pointing out what I'd prefer over higher refresh rate.

Heck, I'd prefer no punch hole displays.

Apple might give the base models a 90hz screen though to keep the difference alive
This is why I can’t go back to 60hz anymore. The difference is just too jarring.

The refresh rate is dynamic, when you're looking at static content the refresh rate can clock down - thus saving power, even over an old fashioned 60Hz panel.

Exactly what I was going to say and thank you for throwing “old fashioned” in there too.

Not really any reason not to do this at this point. I’m sure Apple knows more about the market than I do but I find it hard to believe it’s not price competitive at this point to put 120Hz in everything. At some point it would be harder to get panels that aren’t, I would think.

This is one of those “I’ll believe it when I see it” rumors. It’s long overdue but I remain skeptical.
Agree. ProMotion should have been introduced on iPhone 16 too.
ok ok we got it...after a decade we get 120hz to all models (except probably SE)
The new SE will be an iPhone 14 with USB C in my opinion.
Pretty stupid calling it ‘ProMotion’ when there’s nothing professional about a quality of life feature. 120hz has been standard on Android for years, it’s well overdue.
Who cares about Android ? BTW in most of the implementations, Android phones have a “very little variable” refresh rate that switch between some values like 60/90/120 Hz depending on the app. On some high end models we saw the refresh rate stuck to 60 or 90Hz no matter what. As usual Android is an unregulated mess where the specs list doesn’t tell all the story…
Which marketing name will get this new Retina Display? Liquiditastic Retina?
It is already marketed as ProMotion. By the way, every brand as its meaningless marketing name (aka Samsung Adaptive Motion Smoothness, OnePlus Fluid AMOLED or Google Smooth Display). Marketing is just marketing.
This must be a troll comment. I'm sure you realize that a refresh rate is only one of many display parameters.
Exactly. iPhone 16 panel is top notch in everything except refresh rate.
The 60hz iPhone display is not acceptable for a phone in this price range. It feels laggy.
I fully agree 60 Hz on a €1000 device are not acceptable, but there is nothing laggy about iPhone 15 or 16 panel.

But ProMotion with its not only high refresh rate but also the ability to go up or down depending on the content was actually quite novel when it came out. No other phone had it as far as I remember.
Galaxy S20 note was first, androids have had it before Apple and continue to also have higher refresh rates than what Promotion provides. The only caveat is Promotion had smoother scaling or a more true variable nature than android's implementation at the time (though android OS is no longer hindering hardware for true VRR now)

They’ve got a 50/50 chance of being correct on this one so they’re rolling the dice on 120 and when it doesn’t happen no one will call them out on it.

Well Apple did the sensible thing with Macs and made them all a minimum 16 GB RAM finally, likewise all their iPhones should have fast refresh screens as standard along with 8GB RAM (with exception of maybe the upcoming SE4). There have been a few articles supporting this so most likely is going to happen.

iPad introduced ProMotion in 2017.
Galaxy S20 note is from 2020

FlyingDutch i said that already, but this is about phones not tablets. If your trying to say Apple should get more credit as they technically developed a 120 hz variable refresh display first in 2017 then yes you are right.

It’s time for the “Pro” models to get 144hz panels. That should be good enough for the rest of the decade.

This how I think of high refresh rate screens in general, not having used one yet. I’m skeptical if this is really a life changing experience or just something you forget about in a day. Guess we’ll see someday.
It really differs from person to person. Some swear by it. Some see it at first then stop noticing. Some don’t even see it at all. Some see it and don’t care.
It also seems to differ by the device, with some people saying they see it or care about it on some devices but not others.
On my iPhone I see it clearly but care very little.

What's funny is I can still use large displays at 60Hz just fine, like laptops and desktops, but on the small screen of a phone the difference feels amplified.

In 2024 there's a market for even heavier than 227g iPhone 16 Pro Max with 4,685 mAh battery... see 298g Huawei Mate XT Ultimate.

If Apple so chooses it can push the battery to be >70g heavier.

This 2024 Energizer Hard Case P28K has a 28,000mAh battery for 570g. That's nearly 6x the battery life of the 16 Pro Max.

If I am getting 3 days battery currently then I'd charge every 18 days with the Energizer's battery. Just a little over 41 charging cycles over a 24 month of use.

Inversely Honor to use 7800mAh± battery in new smartphone in 2025.

My iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 4685 mAh that lasts me 3 days.

That's 243 charge cycles over 24 months.

With that Honor 7800 mAh battery would increase it to 5 days.

That's 146 charge cycles over 24 months.

Less charge cycles the longer the battery health.
