I wouldn't call it the greatest of all time... that's pretty bold
It was good though

The plot itself was pretty thin, unless you consider weaving all the original characters together and their beginnings as a team as the actual plot. To me, that WAS the movie, the rest of it was just the framework to hang the characters on.

I do believe it does revive the franchise to a certain extent. The characters were good enough to build on, and with the changes in the timeline, everything we know about the Star Trek reality is up for redefinition.

I really liked Kirk... made me want to join Star Fleet just like Top Gun made me want to be a "naval aviator". ;)

Can't wait to see it. I'll probably go Sunday to our local $5 theater. It's showing there.

star trek special effects

i haven't seen it yet, but i'm going to soon. regarding any changes to what we know to be trek (if there are any), it doesn't bother me too much. a good movie is a good movie, and i've felt trek's needed a fresh (and i mean fresh) start for a while now.

i agree.. i always see start trek shown on cinemax i think and i always ignore it cause its too old and the effects are just you know..

i saw the trailer and i changed my mind.. star trek is a great movie, it wouldn't be so boring with al the new technological advances in movies nowadayas..

I really liked it. I think that the movie was driven much more by the characters than the plot, which is a welcome change for the franchise.

Sounds great!

But I want you to know that I really hate you for saying that! :p

Man, it won't get to the base theaters until later this month. Arg. Long wait. :(

I saw it yesterday night, and what I found strange (and somehow hilarious), is that you could tell the fans from the popcorn movie goers.

I liked the movie enough to watch a sequel, but I didn't like the plot, especially how fast Kirk became Captain.

SPOILER ALERT

I mean he was just about to be punished for cheating on Kobayashi Maru (the test Spock developed), then Vulcan gets attacked, all cadets get to the ships and Kirk gets on the Enterprise with the ("illegal") help of Bones, he saves the day by insubordination (a true Kirk would do this of course) and by the end of the film (maybe only hours after the hearing on his cheating) he gets promoted to Captain of the Enterprise.
I don't think that this would be even possible in our armies, except in war times maybe.

That's the point that bugs me the most.

I understand that the time travel was necessary to reset the status quo so that new stories could be told, I understand that the story was to help get all the people we know together, but it felt rushed and inorganic to say the least. Maybe the next movie will have more character.

And I did like the effects, but it was all so fast, they could have used more time with steadier shots, and not this "we're accidentally in outer space and got to shot a space battle, so we were nervous not being shot, blablabla."

SPOILER ALERT END

But hey, it's a Hollywood blockbuster movie, so nothing much to expect anyway. I just went as I a Star Trek fan, even though it was Terok Nor I liked the most.

Maybe it was just the mood I was in, but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Great character work, great special effects, great comedic moments... I just sat back and loved it. Can't say that I'm a Star Trek fan by any means, but I knew the major references well enough to be clapping my hands in appreciation. But frankly, highly enjoyable for anyone, regardless of prior knowledge of the series. I want to watch it again.

Hm, I was looking forward to seeing it 'cause the trailers looked pretty good, but then I was scanning the Die Welt website yesterday and saw a headline which said the film was completely illogical. Put a bit of a downer on it but this thread's cheered me up!

I'll have to Orange Wednesday it :)

It is completely and utterly illogical. If you can leave your common sense and anything and everything you know about physics at the door to the theater, you'll have a good time. I had a great time.

This is if you don't buy the 'Star Trek is about exploring, blah blah blah culture blah blah philosophy and ethics blah blah blah' argument. The TV shows, okay, maybe, but the movies have always been about space battles and explosions.

Oh, and you definitely cannot separate the nods to the old series from the movie as the entire movie is one big tongue-in-cheek wink to the audience. Almost every scene has several references to the old Trek and it integrates very well. When Sulu's expertise in hand to hand combat turned out to be fencing, that was a nod to Sulu thinking he was D'Artagnan. Then it turns out that he's a total badass.

That moment, when Sulu flipped out his folding space katana, is when I realized I was no longer watching science fiction and watching a space opera. The latter genre is about style over substance and not letting physics getting in the way of a good yarn. Taken that way, this is a great film.

Favorite moment, when Spock explains that they're in an alternate universe. The only think missing was a turn and stare into the camera. Good stuff.

Very disappointed in the style of the filming - constant lens glare effects, way to many close ups, and why was Spock out of focus near the end. As for the actual story I did not like Spock and his romance, he should have had way more conflict about her and that it was probably against the rules to date a student.

I enjoy watching Star Trek, but I can by no means call myself a fan. I needed something to do tonight and didn't want to see the Wolverine movie, so Trek was at the top of the list.

Saw it on a Superscreen and enjoyed every bit of it. Plot wise it is a little thin as others have mentioned, but I feel that this is just a foundation for things to come. It is also quite funny at times and doesn't seem forced.

I was pleasantly surprised!

I thought the movie would not hold well to the Star Trek history but it was great. All the characters were great. The bad guys weren't really that impressive. a futuristic, evil mining vessel. kinda lame but overall the movie was very impressive.

Star Trek has always been a little too nerdy for me, but I throughly enjoyed JJ Abrams' take on it.

Other than this, I think the only other Star Trek movie I've seen all the way through is the Wrath of Khan.

However, the social aspect of going to movies never works out well for me.

There was a 40 something year-old "Trekkie" three rows behind me that thought every reference and subtle joke was hilarious and proceeded to share his feelings with the entire movie theater by shouting "HAHAHAH", "OH! I READ ABOUT THIS PART ON THE INTERNET", "THIS IS AWESOME!", "DON'T WORRY. HE'S GOING TO FIND LEONARD NIMOY", "THAT'S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED IN THE ORIGINAL!", etc.

Very annoying and distracting. Seriously, whisper or **** during the movie.

I have no particular love for the original series or the first seven films, but this was great fun to see.

Is it better than Robocop?

I could still use a little more of Peter Weller's chin, but otherwise, yes, it is better.

Not a trekkie by any stretch but yesterday I saw the one film where Picard has his clone come after him. I thought that was actually a good film. New one looks pretty good from the trailer.
