Does anyone know the reason as to why they price movies that high on iTunes? There is nothing physical that needs to be manufactured, just bandwidth.Seems like a massive profit but maybe I am missing something.

"All six Star Wars movies will be available digitally for the first time..."

DVD is digital.

Bluray is digital.

WHY are people using "available on digital" to mean "available to download"? Why not just say "Available for download"?

Maybe I'm a bit OCD but this misuse of the word "digital" drives me nuts!

Because those are still physical mediums that are prone to be broken, scratched, take up space (pun intended) when going on a trip, etc. Therefore, this is truly the first digital release of the Star Wars Saga. ;)

I will be curious to see if a bundled version will appear on iTunes this Friday, given how other services are offering a bundle with a lower cost than individually buying them. Either way, I'll still get them from iTunes since that's the ecosystem I've invested in for my digital movie collection. I'm ready for them to finally be on my Air 2. :D

I pre-ordered Empire. Am disregarding the rest as far as this and future iterative releases are concerned. A New Hope is great, but it's not so high up that I feel the need to buy it on iTunes. Same definitely goes for Jedi and Sith. Menace and Clones don't even deserve mention.

I should clarify that The Empire Strikes Back, being the least tampered with of the six that people actually care about and also my favorite Star Wars movie and (totally separate from the Star Wars film franchise), the movie I have probably seen the most number of times is the only one that I can still stomach paying for iterative versions of and thusly the one film that has been sorely lacking from my iTunes movie collection. The rest don't need to be there.

THAT being said, to further celebrate this release and my partaking in it, I will be downloading Harmy's Despecialized Editions for all three movies as that is one form of the original trilogy that I don't mind investing in the effort to acquire. (Plus, given that I own (a) a VHS copy of the 1993 version, (b) a VHS copy of the Special Edition, (c) the 2004 DVD set, (c) the 2006 dual-disc versions that contain the theatrical versions as well as the 2004 DVDs, and (d) the Blu-Rays, I think that doing so is arguably legitimate.)

Just a minor correction, but otherwise agree with you!

Heres the Star Wars upgrade schedule

1985 VHS
1995 Laserdisc
2000 DVD
2011 Blu-ray
2015 b̶l̶u̶r̶a̶y̶ or iTunes
2020 4k
2030 8k
2040 ill be too old to care

Then think of all the spin off trilogies that Disney will be cranking out...

I have to say, I don't get all of the hate for the reprocessed original trilogy. Does it really bother people that much that Lucas added a few extra bits of CGI to it? I think my biggest complaint was replacing (at the end of episode 6) the ghost of the old Anakin Skywalker with the ghost of the whiny teenage Skywalker, and that's largely because it's not consistent (he died when he was old, so either the ghost should be him as an older man, or the ghost of Obi Wan should also be of a young Obi Wan).

Now if you want to complain about the "new" trilogy (episodes 1-3), that's another subject altogether. There's plenty to hate there about the storylines, [painfully bad] dialog, certain actors (ahem, teenage Anakin), midi-chlorians, and the fact that every set and object (and every background actor) is CGI (and *looks* like obvious CGI).

Han shot first

The prices on movies for sale in the iTunes store are set by the movie studios, and Apple has no control whatsoever on the pricing.

More money for George Lucas to stuff into his chin.

Incorrect.

Lucas sold all the SW rights to Disney so afaik, Lucas won't get a penny. He sold it to Disney for $4 Billion.

But I hear ya! How many copies/versions do they need?

I ripped my DVDs a long time ago..yes, in a galaxy far, far away and can watch them.

But honestly, I'd find the blu rays over any digital downloads. BRs are still far superior quality imho.

I am very interested to see what the new movie will be like.

The price you pay for a movie has never been about the cost of the physical medium or the shipping. Those things are modest. It's about the value of the content to the viewer plus a premium if its a new, higher quality format or has some other utility. The movie itself is just the same experience, regardless of medium, so why would that experience be priced less? Just second-guessing somebody's profit margins isn't going to get you anywhere. Everybody with business sense charges according to value, not what it costs to make.

In the case of digital downloads over say a DVD, you're getting the back-up of iCloud in case you lose it, the ability to view it anywhere on a whim if you have a device with you, the negligible physical space needed to store it in your home etc. Those things have a value, even if you don't think they cost anything to provide (which they do).

Just curious, is anyone else having problems with the iTunes Extras for this collection? I did make sure to get the HD version, so I'd get the iTunes Extras. They were working this morning before I went off to work, but now they won't show up on my iPad nor on my iPhone. My laptop also keeps asking me for my Apple ID password to view these iTunes Extras, but has no problems with other movies that I have with iTunes Extras.

Seem to work just fine on my iPhone.

I had this same issue, where it asked for my iTunes pw upon viewing. Seems to have stopped doing that...

...but now it's downloading all six movies again, and they're showing up twice in my iTunes library while they're downloading again. Anyone else have this issue?

I just bought the bundle of all 6 Star Wars movies. I figured it was better to take advantage of the sale while I could - saved $30.00! The HD versions are beautiful, loving my Apple TV.

Finally...thoes are my favourite movies all the time . Now collection is coming, yeeey :D

Sorry if a dumb question but I've never bought a movie from iTunes, although I have iTunes match and have bought tons of music....

I assume these movies have DRM?

Ta

The moment the magic died, right there.

Has anyone..

…downloaded and actually watched these and posted a review online?

I've googled and haven't found any.

I know, I know, iTunes HD NEVER can compare to a blu ray copy, but there have been quite a few reviews of iTunes movies in HD coming damn close to the quality on a Blu Ray.

I'm still debating whether to buy on blu ray or on iTunes.

Would be nice if they'd just re-release the Blu Ray set with Digital Copies so I didn't have to decide.
