Wow, that was super fast for a movie as successful as this. Not complaining though. Day one purchase.
Agreed.

But shouldn't they have waited until May the 4th ?

:D

Except that I have no desire for a BD or DVD. Just another piece of plastic taking up space in my house.

It's too bad that piece of plastic also contains the highest quality version of the movie.

Does anyone know the bitrates and sizes of typical iTunes downloads for comparison?

I'll take a bluray instead for the same price. Although I'm getting sick of discs!

Yeah iTunes pricing is too high in my opinion when you can usually get the blu-ray, dvd, and digital copy combo for nearly the same price. I try to wait until iTunes puts a movie on sale for $9.99 or less. I'm just running out of space for discs and now that I've got an Apple TV, it's much more convenient to just buy through iTunes. And movies typically come out earlier on iTunes than anywhere else.

I'm totally with you on that. I haven't purchased physical media regularly since probably 2011 and i haven't looked back since.

It's a shame Apple doesn't do filmmakers commentary audio tracks as extras, I always really enjoyed those back when I was buying laserdiscs and DVDs.

But there are in fact commentaries on some movies and even some TV shows. Certainly not all, and not in the same quantity as blu-ray but they absolutely exist. Gone Girl and Better Caul Saul are such examples.

I do: Good enough for my eyes.

You have my deepest condolences :p

Don't cry for me. I love it. I've never looked back. Never been sorry.

Whatever works for you is what works for you, but, if you haven't used discs for ten years, have you tried Blu-ray? If you care about video and sound quality there's just no comparison.

Have you ever even tried $250 a pound Kobe beef? If you care about the quality of a good steak there's just no comparison. See how ridiculous that sounds?

You're right that whatever works for me (or you) is what works for either of us. You prefer what appears to me to be marginal increases in the quality of the picture. I prefer the convenience and streamlining of not having hundreds of discs and their cases littering my house, and being able to access my movies virtually anywhere.

Disc based for my favourites, streaming for everything else. Dat's just how I roll.

for the same price and only 4 days later, you could buy the BD/DVD/DC and redeem the DC and sell the remaining discs...profit.

But, I understand some don't like getting more for the same when they don't need it

***I just want to add, I am not personally attacking you. i understand everyone has a preference for movies. I know many who buy blurays and sell DC and others who buy blurays with DC and sell the bluray after redeeming the DC. just offering an idea

Does anyone remember when Disney took back movies like the Lion King? Why would I want to spend money for a movie on ITunes when there is a chance it could be taken back, because I do not "own" it. Even though I bought it.

they don't do that.
Disney puts movies/titles in the VAULT as a way of stopping sales from movie providers...be it iTunes/Target/Best Buy/etc.
BUT, if a store still has the disc on the shelf they can sell that one. AND Disney does not take away the movie you "own" or "lease". Lion King is in the Vault. you cannot buy it on iTunes now and you can't find it on many store shelves (vaulted for years so usually sold out) BUT, I purchased a DC of The Lion King and was able to redeem it last year on iTunes and can watch the movie in HD anytime i want now.

they don't take the movie away from YOU...just the Sales Shelves

It doesn't sound ridiculous at all, in fact it sounds just like what I teach young daughter: don't dismiss things until you've tried them, you may be pleasantly surprised.

There is one difference, though, between what we've both said. I know of nowhere where I can sample said expensive beef for free, yet there a uncountable places where one can sample a Blu-ray for free. (Also the upgrade price from "regular" beef to Kobe beef is quite steep while the upgrade price from streaming- to disc-based is often non-existent.)

At any rate, I'm not here to argue; I was just curious if you'd ever sampled a Blu-ray-based film over streaming-based, that's all.

You can't sample a BluRay in your house for free. You need a BR player. Then you need 7.1 sound system. Those aren't free. Then you need to run speaker cable all over the place. That aint free.

Yes, one can--I sampled BD for free in my home before I purchased the equipment. If in-home sampling is important one can buy a BD player from a store with a decent return policy and simply return the equipment.

Yes, if one chooses to go all out, but why are you arguing that "all out" and in-home are the only options?

One could also walk into any Walmart, Best Buy, or even high-end seller of home theatre equipment and demo a Blu-ray. Also, in no way whatsoever is a 7.1 setup necessary for testing, or regular viewing of, BDs. I have a 5.1 setup, as do most people, but even in a 2.0 setup the HD audio will be noticeable if one is already capable of hearing the difference.

Only you know why you've limited yourself to a single option, but there are more.

No. Doing so means they would make less money than releasing it before.

It's going to make a gazillion dollars whenever it is released. Then, May 4th allows for a re-marketing blitz, which will boost sales up again.

Ah... good point!

What do you use to rip blurays on a Mac?
blu-ray drive + MakeMKV + Handbrake

you can google to find the same video and audio settings that apple uses for movies in iTunes to use with handbrake to make 1080p 5:1 mp4s

I also use MakeMKV and it is truly indispensable! Even though it's "free while in beta" I ponied up the $50 to support the developer--it's just that good.

Neat, but I'd prefer it in the best quality currently available to us consumers so Bluray it is. Also if you were lucky enough to get this Star Wars boxset

then you can remove the 3 bonus discs and drop in the new trilogy!
