Why would have May 4 been an amazing release date?? Just curious. Sorry if I'm missing something obvious

That's what I do too, after I rip the disc. True, I do then have to put the disc somewhere but it doesn't have to be accessible, so I store it away in a storage container in my basement. The quality of the Blu-ray with the convenience of the fileKeeping movies on a local hard drive is the sweet spot, in my opinion.
If memory serves the op is essentially correct: when Disney pulled The Lion King from iTunes people who had already purchased it were unable to stream or re-download the file. It was a big issue at the time.they don't do that.
Disney puts movies/titles in the VAULT as a way of stopping sales from movie providers...be it iTunes/Target/Best Buy/etc.
BUT, if a store still has the disc on the shelf they can sell that one. AND Disney does not take away the movie you "own" or "lease". Lion King is in the Vault. you cannot buy it on iTunes now and you can't find it on many store shelves (vaulted for years so usually sold out) BUT, I purchased a DC of The Lion King and was able to redeem it last year on iTunes and can watch the movie in HD anytime i want now.
I think the joke spread as the Internet became more accessible, but I first heard of it in the '80s. Word had probably just not spread to your caves and huts yetAhh. What a dummy! I remember that being all over the internet last year, but don't remember it growing up in the 80's and 90's. I either (in an amazing feat of living in a cave) missed it all those years, or it was a new phenomenon over the past couple of years. Thanks @Wondercow

Sweet. I hope Apple releases the Kylo Ren extra-pouty/super-emo version with the deleted tantrum scenes!
Yeah iTunes pricing is too high in my opinion when you can usually get the blu-ray, dvd, and digital copy combo for nearly the same price. I try to wait until iTunes puts a movie on sale for $9.99 or less. I'm just running out of space for discs and now that I've got an Apple TV, it's much more convenient to just buy through iTunes. And movies typically come out earlier on iTunes than anywhere else.
Disagree with the consensus I'm seeing, usually a Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital pack is like $30-35 in stores here in Colorado. $20 is a bit much for a digital copy, I agree, but it's not as though it's the same price.
Personally I could technically play Blu-Rays in my PS4, but I have no place to put a million discs (and don't really want to try and find a place). Keeping movies on a local hard drive is the sweet spot, in my opinion. Doesn't take up any room, don't have to wait for streaming if Comcast craps out on you (correction: WHEN Comcast craps out).
"The Sith rely on passion for their strength." Thus "emo" = Sith POWER.
Which make Kylo Ren consistent with Star Wars lore, and one of the better examples of it.
He's both young and emotionally unstable (like his dripping lightsaber), which also makes him both dangerous and frightening as a character. He has absolutely no qualms about "releasing his anger," further cementing the completion of his path towards the Dark Side of the Force.
I enjoyed him greatly.

they don't do that.

they don't take the movie away from YOU...just the Sales Shelves

Will there be 4k?
Yeah...sucks... I don't like 3d...cause it hurts my eyes.Sorry but it's happened a number of times. I can't speak to Disney directly, but if a publisher wants the product off the iTunes "shelves" then you had better have a copy downloaded to your PC.

Not sure what's going on in Colorado but I have hundreds of Blu-rays and often buy the 3D version for the kids.. never have paid over $25 bucks at release. Don't recall ever seeing a $35 Blu-ray that wasn't a box set. That sounds like hyperbole.
The film was finished in 2K so no UHD on the horizon. They are going to release the 3D version later in the year and there is question about what's happening with iMax footage.
Let's recalibrate what worst ever is.The black guy was the worst actor ever, beyond stupid.
Maybe, but Disney's relationship with Lucasfilm may be more similar to how Marvel's stuff is handled. Not everything will have the exact same rules as what Disney proper does. It's been reported that Disney isn't releasing anything in the UHD format in 2016.

There would be the advantage of better color resolution too, even at "only" 2k resolution.

Got to go for that 8K.Yeah, I understand for sure but they're obviously going to milk for all it's worth. They'll delay the UHD version after they do the inevitable 4k remaster and then I'm sure we'll see some other variants at that time too.

Several of the first batch of UHD movies released were finished in 2K. They're not true 4K, but offer an upgrade on 1080P as well as HDR as improvements over the bluray release.
There's even a website that documents it: http://realorfake4k.com/
FWIW....per that site SW:TFA WAS finished in 4K

I bought a disc case for my BDs (boxed-sets aside), so they take up little space. They sell really nice, decorative, multi-disc cases too, so space is not a reason to go streaming only.
I want my media physical;streaming HD content is just not there yet quality-wise and I'll be damned if someone denies me access to stuff I paid for, for whatever reason.
I only buy high-effects movies though, and my collection is not that big. I do love box-sets and have Lord of the Rings and Hobbit extended series, Harry Potter, Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, and of course, Star Wars in said format. Would not have it any other way.
Aside from box-sets, my BD purchases are primarily used discs from RedBox at $5 a piece. Can't beat that.

Both then you have to have two or three devices on to play a movie: the drive (to store the content), the computer (to serve the content) and the Apple TV (or whatever to receive the content and output it to the tv).
Personally, I prefer discs for my faves and box-sets, but I rip everything anyhow, so I get the best of both worlds.
As I mention in a different post, a disc case solves the storage problem. I have one of those for my extended collection.
That way, anyone in the house can grab a disc and go watch upstairs or in the car without fiddling with connectivity, network settings, buffering, and all that happy horse-sh.
Pop disc in, push "play". It just works.![]()
I understand that other movies have been released in UHD from less than 4k masters, but I don't see how it's relevant if Disney has stated that they won't be doing that.
