I'm probably an idiot for asking this, and it's a bit off-topic(-ish):
What is the point of "the Resistance" when the New Republic is in power? The Resistance is the New Republic. Isn't the First Order technically the Resistance because it's, well, resisting the New Republic?
Shouldn't the New Republic's "resistance" just be called "the army?"
I saw the movie under the influences of jet lag, so it's entirely likely I missed the distinction in the movie.

I think....
The New Republic pushed the Empire to some outer limits and didn't actually stop the Empire. more so took a lot of money away. The Resistance believes the Empire is still going to come back to power (...New Order?) and the New Republic doesn't really believe the Resistance but allows them to look into this idea and doesn't just shut them down.

I can't remember why they have the names they now have...surely someone smarter in the Star Wars Mind will elaborate...or tell me I am so wrong this.

Basically, the New Republic and the First Order have an uneasy cease-fire. Leia (and others) suspected the First Order is up to shenanigans, so they created The Resistance, to observe and if needed, fight a guerrilla-style fight.

Most of the control of systems is now left to the systems, and the New Republic is there to maintain treaties and "shipping lanes". Where as the First Order has pulled back to "wild space", building a new war machine with children they've "recruited" to the cause.

Nope, but this is one of the highest grossing movies of all time and the audience overlaps quite a bit with ours. Our last post on it was quite popular.

This was sooooooo fast to download. 3.5 months. It was still earning well at the box office, but they pulled theaters for other movies. Kind of stunned it's already available to download.

The shame is they pulled it within 100 million of beating Titanic for the number 2 all time worldwide spot, and only 14 million form being #10 in the all time adjusted domestic box office gross. I would have left it in the theaters just to break a couple of more records. The download sales are still going to be there ...

Yay... NOT

For those who did enjoy it, have fun.

I've purposely held off on any Disney owned digital because of the price and there's no way I'll pay $40 for the first Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but apparently you can not buy this movie through iTunes unless all monitors connected to your computer are HDCP-compatible.

I have three monitors (the laptop's built-in, an Apple Cinema, and an offbrand monitor for other crap which is probably the one that doesn't support HDCP), and had to disconnect all but the MacBook's built-in screen before the "Buy" button actually worked.

IMHO, this is an example of iTunes' buyin process needing some major rethinking. For example, I rarely have the 4-8GB free on my phone to buy a movie there, but while I'm out and decide on what I'd like to watch later, I would love to act on that decision then and there rather than having to wait until I am at a computer or on the Apple TV. If I do have enough space to download the movie, it asks if I want to download it now or "later" (ie, "never"), which then allows me to quickly start it when I get home without having to futz around. However, if I don't have enough space to download it now, I can't even buy it? That's just stupid, Apple. You know what devices I have and use to watch content. You know that a number of them are perfectly capable of either downloading or streaming the movie. Why stop something from happening pretending that my phone is the only thing that might be used to watch this movie (rather than, say, present a dialog like "You do not have enough space to download this movie on this device. Do you want to buy it for viewing elsewhere, or cancel? [Cancel] [Continue]").

Similarly here. You know I have an AppleTV and phones etc that are HDCP-compliant. Hell, you know that on this computer two of the three screens are HDCP compliant! Why make me jump through hoops? Why not just ensure that one of the screens, or even better one of the screens commonly attached to one of my devices supports HDCP?

Ugh. More infuriating of course is that this is yet another example of "copy protection" features getting in the way of honest consumers while having absolutely no effect whatsoever on pirates (who can easily get around the HDCP check) or even multicasters. Ugh, Apple. Fix this!

Honestly guys, the film got way too much hype. I liked it, especially the effects. But the story could have been better. The thing that bothered me the most was how Finn and Rey were wielding the light saber. Finn, a guy who worked at sanitation, stood up to Kylo without a problem. I admit Kylo wasn't the biggest bad ass, but he could have beaten Finn just by using the force. Same with Rey. It took Luke two movies to master the force and to be good with the lightsaber. And in this movie, the first time she picks it up, it's a even contest vs a obviously much stronger opponent. And yeah, he was hurt, but that doesn't mean he couldn't have 'cheated' by using the force and just slamming them both at a tree or something.

Not a movie review site, but Finn wasn't just "a guy who worked at sanitation"; he was a fully-trained Stormtrooper, whose peers also had lightsaber training (as shown on-screen). I believe the sanitation line was about what the stormtroopers did on "base" when they weren't out terrorizing little towns. Not sure why that is so confusing to people, but it keeps popping up at a criticism.

Rey, obviously, has some very significant natural affinity to the force. I expect that it will be shown in the next movies that, compared to her, Luke was a force lightweight. I see her very fast pick-up of force powers (not just with the saber, but also mind control, etc) with no training at all as foreshadowing of her ultimate power in it, not as a storytelling flaw. You were supposed to notice that. It should (hopefully) have a good pay-off in the next couple of years.

That said, if it does not, it's definitely a flaw. I'm just choosing to give the new story the benefit of the doubt, given that it was never intended as a one-movie-then-done affair.

I can't wait until episode 9, when the "bad guys" will have their 4th attempt at a Death Star.

A few problems I had with the current version, Death Star 3.0 (usually, at 3.0, they get it right, don't they?)
1. Anything that sucks up a star won't have snow on it. Especially when it is compressed into a smaller space. Physics, folks. I'll use the universal gas equation: PV=nRT (volume has shrunk, so guess what happens to pressure and temperature?)
2. On point #1... Anything that sucks up the mass of a star isn't going to have people jumping all over the place. The gravity pull of our sun at the surface is 28x that of the earth's. Now, that death star just compressed that star into a smaller volume, so the gravitational pull would be even larger (think, mass stays the same, the distance to the center of that mass just shrank (formula is F = G(M1*M2)/Distance between two masses), so 120lb Rae now weighs 33,600 lbs, and that not so light saber now weighs 280lbs. Use the Force, indeed.
3. Seriously... Every time they build one of these, they leave some easy to disarm and blow up flaw. Sooner or later, they'll run out of money to build these things.
4. Where do they get all the materials to build these things?
5. The mass of these things would cause havoc on any planet or moon that has a visit from these stations. think of what the moon does to the weather on our planet and the water on it. Now, imagine another one shows up and starts messing with stuff. they don't even have to fire a shot.
6. An alternative to them blowing up planets would just have them suck up the star and then leave. Planets do really well when they're orbiting stars. As soon as that star goes away (is stolen), it'd be interesting to see the effect. My guess is they'd eventually freeze, and careen off into space.

If you're wondering how he eats and breathes and other science facts (la la la) then repeat to yourself it's just a show, I should really just relax....

In episode 9, we're gonna have a bunch of teddy bears named after TED and his thunder buddies attacking the NEW ORDER.

Such a disappointment in terms of story, which chronologically doesn't push the overall universe forward because it's practically a remake of Episode IV so Disney can make all the money. I just wish Episode VII was a true continuation. And not to forget that John Williams score disappointed as well, which is something that even the prequels delivered on.
I agree 100% with your score comment and 0% with your story comment. I am so confused. :)

When i saw this on the theatres, I was taken back and I was amazed, the Star Wars hype was back. But after watching it for the second time yesterday, I realized this movie isn't made for repeat viewing. The story was just a rehash and nothing at all special. I hope the next two movies try to defer from following close to the original trilogy story.

Anybody know if they still have there $4.99 movie of the week(end) anywhere on itunes? Its nothing but Star Wars banners on the entire carousel.

I look forward to that every Friday :(

I know; that was my same exact thought
"What's with all these Star Wars banners! Where the $4.99 iTunes weekend movie ?"

does the blu ray set's digital copy work on itunes or is it an actual iTunes code they give you?

the grainy pictures on amazon's sale page says i can " choose a provider "

Kylo was still in training and the progression of the lead role becoming a Jedi master was only necessary in the original trilogy to tell the story. No need to go over any more old ground in the new film.

No need to show it, but surely it needs to happen. In this movie, it doesn't even happen. It's Instant Jedi. What's left for Luke to teach her? To not be so perfect?

While I like the "Star Wars" movies I have never been a big fan of them. The latest movie to me looked to me as they got lazy with the writing (acting), were going to do certain things differently, but changed their mind at the last second and kind of did the storyline in reverse at times compared to the first movie. The end of the movie was boring and predictable, if I was a popcorn eater I would had been throwing popcorn at the TV Screen (I didn't see it in the movie theater). :D

No, the movie was rather good, especially for people who are old enough to have watched the original trilogy before the dissapointing prequels. Could be better but could be worse. Quite sentimental and nostalgic for the fans (also felt 80s at times), which is not a bad thing, but I can see why young viewers might find it a bit boring or why neutral ones will only stay with its weaknesses. I would call it best hollywood blockbuster movie in years, for what it's worth. In an era where you typically get hunger games, batman vs superman fiascos, vampire movies and avatars this was surely a better than average effort and it can leave you asking for more.

For the most part, I do. I've ignored the part about how light moves slower than a bullet (blasters) and how they make light stop at 1 meter (light sabers), or the military worth of putting laser cannons in trenches (odds are, you'll wind up blasting your own space ship if you miss).

It just that the bad guys keep implementing "Death Stars"... I really wish they'd come up with something new. I really do like the movies, and all 7 of my kids and I go watch them at the theaters and enjoy the fun of the stories. They're all Star Wars aficionados, and while watching it last night, I'm enjoying the Rey/Finn interplay.

What made you think Star Wars was supposed to be hard sci-fi?
