The Starbucks app for iOS devices was today updated to version 4.5, introducing a refined user interface for locating nearby stores and placing orders.

Finding a Starbucks store that's close by is easier following the 4.5 update, with an improved map that makes it easier to see which stores are closest to you.

One-tap filters that are better organized offer a faster way to find a suitable location, and when you tap on a store from the available store list, you're now presented with a map and directions to it.

Ordering has also been improved, with a main menu that offers images of each available product and a more intuitive, easy-to-use layout for drilling down into each food and drink section.

While the iOS App Store update info focuses only on the new store location features, a product designer at Starbucks says the update also includes Touch ID and Face ID support for locking the Starbucks app and a long list of bug fixes.

The Starbucks app can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

I've never experienced an incorrect balance. I didn't know that was a thing with Starbucks.

The wallet app is almost always showing the incorrect balance ever since you were able to have a Starbucks card in passbook/ wallet. Not sure if it needs to be corrected on Starbucks side or Apple side.

There is sometimes a short delay but I’ve never had an incorrect balance.

We’re not talking about the Starbucks app, we’re talking about the wallet app. The balance is usually always wrong in the wallet app. Not everyone uses the Starbucks app to pay, some people like myself only use the Starbucks app to reload and maybe sometimes order in advance for pickup. But most of the time I just use the wallet app accessible from the lock screen to pay, easiest and quickest way to pay. But like I said, the balance usually is always wrong there, and it’s annoying.

I just checked and my balance is the same across Starbucks.com, the Starbucks app, and the Starbucks Card in my Apple Wallet. I check the Wallet app balance the least often, so I'll have to pay attention the next few times whether it is incorrect and if it matters based on whether I use the Wallet or Starbucks app to pay.

Q: Does this mean the correct balance will show up in Wallet now?

A: No.

Same for me as well. Hasn’t happened lately, like in the last 4-6 months or so I want to say. But for awhile, and I mean like a year or two, the wallet balance was constantly incorrect, and it was never clear what was causing it.

I usually found that doing a quick on/off with the wallet’s automatic update did the trick- tap the “i” icon on the lower right of the wallet card, then swipe to turn off. Force quit the wallet app, the turn update back on.

I also suspect- and I have no proof- that Starbuck’s WiFi might be to blame. Not only does it give you a double notice it’s trying to connect, I don’t think you’re actually on their WiFi until you accept the conditions in Safari, despite the iPhone showing the WiFi icon. Maybe it somehow interferes with updating the wallet? In any case, I always make it a point to quickly switch off WiFi on my iPhone if I’m just going in there for a quick coffee.

Starbucks product designer here. For those of you with Wallet issues, could you tell me:

1) If you have automatic updates turned on? (Tap the "i" on your wallet pass, then look for a toggle.)
2) If the card has been in your wallet for a long time, like, years? We switched the backend for passes a few years ago because of issues like this, so I'm curious if older passes see this issue more than newer ones.

Thanks for dropping in.

I have a question about a problem I’ve been having for over a year. When I try to reload a card with Apple Pay, it can’t complete my payment. It works when I select the Visa card, but not Apple Pay. Apple Pay works in other apps though.

Can't say for sure... When we see that error, it's almost always because of an address formatting issue. Could you triple-check the billing address by tapping on the card in the Apple Pay bottom sheet, then scrolling down?

(It may work fine for other retailers because they have looser requirements for billing address.)

Thanks, that did the trick. I deleted my address and re-entered it, and the reload worked just fine now.

Is there any chance the app will be updated to allow us to just pay direct from a bank card without having to top-up our Starbucks card with funds? (And obviously get the loyalty stars.)

Caffe Nero here in the UK offers this; scan barcode, it charges your preferred debit/credit card AND gives you a "stamp" (rather than "star") – 9 stamps = 10th drink free.
I thought Apple added this functionality quite a while ago, so why is SB still forcing us to hold cash on a separate loyalty card? Annoying, to say the least.

If every shop we shopped at forced users to hold funds on their loyalty card in order to get privileges (points/stars/stamps/whatever each company calls them!), then it'd be ridiculous.

1) Yes, even with automatic update turned on, the balance still intermittently failed to update.

2) Yes. Up until recently, I had kept the same pass in my wallet for many years. It was actually the first one I had ever entered into my wallet, I think back in 2012 or 2013 when I had a 5S. Maybe it was a sentimental thing, I don’t know. Whenever I got a gift card though, I just transferred the funds from the GC onto the original pass in my wallet. I went from a 5S to a 7 Plus in fall of 2016, and the issue still occurred up until maybe 4-6 months ago, when suddenly the balance issues stopped, even with my really old pass. Finally, over this holiday season, I got rid of my ancient pass and now use a new one.

That’s my story, at least. Thanks for coming by!

Hm, sorry to hear you have occasional problems. I feel you though with sentimental passes — wish Apple would let us archive them. Hopefully the new pass behaves better.

Personally, I agree. I prefer to keep very little on my card. Hopefully, we'll all see a revision to the Reward system one day — but I have no idea if or when that'd happen.

Is it really that difficult finding a Starbucks location? Usually all I have to do is turn around - wherever I am, there are one or more within 100 feet of me.

Ha — that's what it's like here in Seattle, but not in the midwest (where I'm from originally).

Rembeber when macrumors was about Apple related rumors, and not news about some company that updates their app?

From the twitter account I would’ve initially thought phi starbucks is just only getting around to updating their app on a android 4.5?! Hehehe.

Too expensive two cult like for ordering a damn simplistic coffee and many fee like liquid drano!

To others this is good coffee stuff. I’m not that heavy on coffee anyway. Good that after so long iOS apps are still being updated improved designed and better use of API’s.

Automatic updates is turned on but my pass is the original I’ve had for many years. I will delete it and add again and try Starbucks again later this week.
