Starbucks does not have the best coffee were i live but i always drink from starbucks. The main reason i like them is because they are everywhere, when i travel i can walk into any starbucks and get the same coffee i am used to.

The consistency is much more markable than any "excellence."
*golf clap* I do applaud SB for their consistency. And there's nothing like feeling like you're back in the US when abroad, than stepping into a SB. :p

Starbucks tastes burnt to me.
Indeed. Most folks who've worked at SB will agree that they burn their coffee. (Note: I haven't worked there, but many a peer has.)

I still go out of my way to Peet's, though...
:D Yes! Yet another I've brought to love Peet's.

I didn't vote since I don't really like any of the options. :p

Starbucks sells coffee?!

I mean, go into one and try to order a regular coffee. They will look at you as if you're from another planet!

:D

i find the brewed (drip) coffees at Starbucks (or Buckies, as i like to call it) to be overly strong, bitter and just not good. their espresso drinks are pretty good, but not the best i have had. i usually get Americanos when i go there as its like a regular coffee but tastes a lot better due to it being a freshly made espresso drink. for the record, the best coffee i have ever had was at Le Panier in Pikes Place market in Seattle.

thing to remember here is that Starbucks sells the experience of a starbucks as much as the coffee.

starbucks = apple (only apples products happen to be good, but both are selling the experience)

i see, but in general it's Coffee.

maybe next year i'm going on a long vacation to America and probably then i'll go to on of the thousand Starbucks.
They are starting to spring up on continental Europe now. I've noticed that there's several opened up in Barcelona.

Starbucks coffee's main virtue is that it's pretty consistent from place to place. So, you're never going to get a truly vile cup of coffee there. On the other hand, you could say the same thing of Dunkin Donuts (at least in New England -- I've heard that DD is not as consistent in other regions).

DD is quickly losing its consistency to me. You get a cup of coffee from a DD and it is delicious. You get the DD coffee grounds/beans from a DD and it is delicious. You get DD coffee grounds from the grocery store and it is crap. Something isn't right there..

But that is for another thread. To me Starbucks is consistently awful.

I'm not a big coffee drinker, but my friends who do say that it is nothing spectacular. It does offer some serious choices for what to put in/on it, but it is by no means the best coffee in the world.

Nice! maybe in the future i can go to a starbucks in Belgium!

One of the main corporate goals of Starbucks was to "bring european style coffee to America". So, since already on that side of the Pond, there's no need to be excited about the arrival of Starbucks.

My personal thoughts on Starbucks are best summed up by this image:

:p nice photo

I love Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha, and used to drink them all them time when I was in Paris. Really expensive, though - EUR 4.50 for a venti cup. Pity they aren't any Starbucks outlets yet in India. :(

I used to think starbucks was really great. Then I discovered a few smaller local chains and "Mom and Pop" coffee houses. Now I really only go to starbucks when I go back to my hometown as the only mom and pop coffee houses are a little ways away and not as good.

Now Starbucks does make some drinks that I like around Christmas and in Oct.

*Now I am sorry for any spelling mistakes I am on one of the school computers that only has IE on it so no built in spell checker

Starbucks is like any other mid-price chain... like Chilli's or Bennigan's or Macaroni Grill or whatever. They're not amazing. But the quality is decent and consistent from place to place. The consistency is much more markable than any "excellence." Also they make decent coffee more readily available. Like Starbucks is available on a lot of turnpikes now... it's much better than anything else you could've gotten when you pulled off a turnpike.

In other words, there's a much better place for me to get coffee here, and I rarely get Starbucks. But if I'm traveling, or were I a visitor here, I probably wouldn't know that, and would settle quite happily for Starbucks.

The perfect statement on Starbuck's!

I believe it was Consumer Reports who rated McDonald's coffee above Starbucks, in terms of flavor and taste.

Of course, I'm not a coffee drinker, but I have my Starbucks grande nonfat no-water chai next to me right now! :)

Even when I'm traveling, I tend to seek out the mom-n-pop coffee cafés, and I usually find them. In many parts of the world, though, that means drinking more espresso drinks than anything, and I'm generally a drip coffee kinda guy (though I use a French press to make my java at home).

Some parts of the US are still pretty hopeless, though. That's where a Starbucks is a welcome sight.

Starbucks does treat their employees well: above average pay for the industry and excellent benefits. While I hate them a little less than I once did, I still don't patronize them very much.

The presence of so many Starbucks, and the repetitiveness of their company name and logo leads people to think of Starbucks whenever they crave a coffee and want to find a cafe. It's just a sheep following the herd.

Starbucks coffee is supposed to suck. I don't really drink coffee and can't tell much of a difference, but that's what I've been told.

McDonald's coffee is not bad. When you're on the road and need a lift, it's definitely the coffee of choice (though some Starbucks are starting to show up at rest areas). Personally I prefer Starbucks to McDonalds, but there is definitely better coffee out there. Neighborhood coffee shops, unfortunately, are not always better. I didn't appreciate it when our local shop started selling coffee beans in 12-oz bags and charging the same price they had been charging for 16-oz bags.

When I was in Italy this summer, most mom-and-pop places I dropped into were better than Starbucks in the US (though I didn't try Starbucks in Europe).

Starbucks makes a pretty good white mocha. I make most of my espresso at home in a Moka Express. It's just the way I like my black espresso. When I go to a coffee shop, it's usually beacuse I'm jonesing for a milk-based sweetened drink. I usually get a "double short non-fat white mocha".

Even so, I've had some pretty screwed up drinks from Starbucks. The last time I went, it was pretty clear that somebody just pressed the button without even looking at the temperature reading on the thermocouple. The shot was very bitter, which is a sign that either the shot came out too fast, or the water temperature was too low. If I have straight shots, I find that the shots are usually over-extracted (the business with pulling shots too quickly).

To sum up, Starbucks coffee itself is not very good. But the drinks that they just happen to put coffee into are all right. They also have a variety of non-coffee drinks that I generally like. That said, I almost always go to the local coffee shoppe two blocks from my apartment.

I like the pumpkin spice latte myself... but it does make me wonder if they're just running out of drink ideas. I imagine that on India's Independence Day, I'll start hearing, "Tall curry latte for Kyle!"
