Is this the same as any other "in-app purchase" or does it fall under the agreements of the "Apple Pay" mobile payment system? Is Apple getting a 30% cut of Starbucks Gift Cards sold through the app or is it just getting the fees agreed upon with the banks?

If in-app Apple Pay cost 30%, no one would dream of accepting it. I believe it is card-not-present credit card rates (e.g. the same as it would cost them reloading on their website through the app, but substantially more than it costs them to use your credit card in the store).

I think you are right. What surprises me is that the UFC.tv app has the ability to order a UFC PPV stream with in-app purchase (then I cast to Chromecast). So Apple is getting a 30% cut of a $49.99 UFC PPV. I wonder if that is more than DirecTV gets when you order through them (or any other cable/satellite provider).

The app is definitely not optimized for 6/6 Plus. A good way to tell is by looking at the time at the top and how it magnifies when you open the app.

How do they keep updating for this long and still not support the new phone resolutions??

So many companies' apps seem to be guilty of this. I point it out to many of them via various feedback/contact email addresses, but so far it seems as though most aren't interested.

It's almost as if they're not really aware there is a problem/can't 'see' the issue.

I hope Apple brings in an enforcement, stipulating that developers need to have iPhone 6/6+ ready resolutions.

I imagine it is less, to be honest. Pay-per-view is a cash cow. I'm not sure the margin, but it's huge.

Starbucks Marketing Doesn't Get It

As an expat Yank in Australia, I travel to the USA once or twice per year. Visiting Starbucks, especially when doing a cross country drive is actually a vacation feature for me. It's a bit of nostalgia (as is stopping at In and Out), as the two Starbucks outlets that existed in South Australia have been closed for years and we moved here from Seattle. Sadly, Starbucks limits this app to the USA App store only. The Aussie app store has the Aussie app and the China app, but not the USA version. So when I tried to download it to my phone last November while on vacation in the USA, I was told NO.

It's the height of marketing stupidity to lock out the visiting-the-USA-tourist trade from finding Starbucks locations using the app..because they can't download the app.

NOTE (1): There are other options. I KNOW! I used them on my last vacation. The point of my post was Starbucks marketing failure, not that I was unable to find a solution. Please exercise some self-restraint and don't add a bunch of replies about how to find a Starbucks without the app. Please.......

NOTE (2): If you hate: Starbucks, coffee in general, American consumerism, etc. Or, if you want to extoll the virtues of independent coffee shops, it is not needed as a reply to this posting. Please...

NOTE (3): Yes I know Apple Pay may not be available to all visitors. It would be easy to disable the feature inside the app for those not eligible while still letting them use the other features of the app. Remember, the point of the post is Starbucks' failure to use the app to the maximum extent for marketing--given they probably have a lot of dollars tied up in development. So a reply to this post about Apple Pay in the Starbucks app is not needed. Please....

NOTE (4): Yes you can change your IOS store country--I KNOW THAT. But there are issues. If you change your Apple ID to a new country, you can no longer download your purchases from the old country. If you have an Apple ID for each country, when you change, you are blocked from changing back (at last check it was 30 or 90 days, I don't remember). This doesn't seem to apply to Apple TV though, just IOS devices. So please don't post a bunch of replies to just change app stores/IDs--there are issues. Please.....

That is not true for UK/US/Japan. I have one of each, and NO issues changing even multiple times a day.

Uh, I rechecked and you are correct vis a vie having multiple Apple IDs/country addresses and bank accounts and I can change my app store back and forth between my US and AU Apple IDs (thanks for that). However I must change back and forth everytime I want updates or to see undownloaded purchases from the store I am not currently signed in to. As I mull this, I am thinking that the issue I experienced had to do with changing the country of a single Apple ID (which you can't do at all if you have a ongoing subscription or any Apple store credit). There is (was) a time limit before you could change it back.

And I read that many users with multiple Apple IDs have gotten one of their IDs canceled as a violation of the terms of service--hope that doesn't happen to us.

And this entire dialogue would not be needed if--as per the actual subject of my post--Starbucks had been a little more marketing oriented when developing and posting their app. It's unlikely visiting tourists will have access to all of this information or be willing to create a new Apple ID with a US address and credit card. Just sayin'

I've never had an issue with multiple IDs. I do hope that doesn't change but other than the headache of switching them it has been no problem. I didn't even realise it WAS a violation as long as you were in each country legitimately with local banking and Internet (which would only put my Japanese one, funded by gift cards, in jeopardy)
