Has anyone tried boot camping and running SC2 on a mid 2009 base MPB?

2.53Ghz C2D
4GB DDR3
9400M

I'm debating whether or not to even try it.

Believe it or not, I'm running SC2 on that exact machine and it'll do high settings on full-resolution, in OSX. That's more than I can say for my octo-core 3GHz mac pro w/ 10GB RAM and a 8800GT.

I see no reason to shy away.

That's nutty. How is that possible? Maybe the drivers in OSX for the 9400m aren't as much of a crap shoot than the others? I'm surprised it can even do better than low!

24-inch iMac
3.06Ghz C2D
4GB RAM
NVIDIA 8800GS 512MB
Snow Leopard 10.6.4

When loaded from within Mac OS X, the best I can do is medium graphics settings at 1280x720, and even then I get a lot of slowing and choppy framerate

If I bootcamp directly into Windows 7 and load from there, I can play on Ultra graphics settings, everything fully maxed out, at max resolution 1920x1200

I have similar iMac specs except I have 2.8GHz and 2GB of RAM. I basically get the same results. I gave up on trying to run it in OS X and now solely run it in BootCamp as the performance is much, much better. I'm running it in XP via BC at 1920x1200 with most settings on High. Only get occasional stutters when there are lots of units in play.

Should I up my RAM to 4GB?

Thanks

10.5.8
3.06 GHz C2D
4GB RAM
Nvidia GT130 - 512MB

All settings - High
Resoltuion - 1920 x 1200 (max)
Playablilty - Perfect (have only played the campaign so far)

Havent tried under Bootcamp yet.
What are acceptable FPS counts for quality during gameplay?

man after having solely played the campaign in bootcamp Win7 with my MBP 320m and then finally playing some MP in OSX, even with 40+ FPS the game just feels less responsive than windows. The mouse movements feel slower when moving the window screen, clicks look a split second slow. It plays fine but going from Windows to OSX I can tell there's a big difference in responsiveness.

have high shaders and mix of med/lows in Windows7 and medium + lows on OSX to get similar FPS performance. But just the feel is much better in Windows. Will probably continue booting into Windows for SC2.

On my Mac Mini with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 320m and 2GB ram (4GB arriving tomorrow) I'm getting a steady 30-40fps with the medium setting under OS X.

It's more than playable so I'm pretty happy with it. Hoping with a extra 2GB ram it will run even smoother :)

Edit: Oh forgot to add that's in windowed mode, maximised on a 1920x1080 monitor. (So I can flip between SC2 and Adium)

Yes, especially since it's so inexpensive.

Yeah I'm not a fan of playing on OSX. It just feels weird, can't explain it but just a bit off.

ugh is it possible to just fry my 2009 macbook pro playing SC2 and applecare-ing it for an i5 macbook pro? :p

I Installed SC2 last night on my late 2009 27" i5 - and I got an error message suggesting that it didnt recognise my GPU properly. The help page has sent me to download DirectX again - has anyone else had this?

Also, anyone had experience running this game on:

27" i5
Win7 (64)
8GB RAM.

Runs fine here, but....

Mac book pro 13" 2010
2,4 Ghz
4 GB ram
Nvidia 320M

- Most settings on medium
- Reflections off

Runs like a dream, except when pop limit reaches 500-600 in 2on2's/3on3's, then the lagging strikes!

When minimized OSX runs really slow - so I always close SC2 when in OSX.

I'm very impressed with my onboard gfx chip.

Unfortunately I have another problem (which luckily seems to be on the retreat) - my SC2 must have crashed around 20 / 150 games - thats 13.something% crashing, not awesome IMO.

oh btw, 1st post ;)!

A couple pages back I said I ordered one of the new iMacs, it finally arrived last night. Specs are in my sig. I don't recall what my game settings were, I am at school now, but the game ran awesome. I used the start up settings to play. I got through the first level and cinematic, and then the 2nd level started and so far I have no problems. There was no lag, the game looks smooth, and there are no issues. I don't have the framerate yet but I will soon. My iMac gets hot at the top, but I am just going to install the fan application and that should be fine.

It hasn't been stable for me running in a window. Pretty rock-solid (aside from terrible performance at high settings) running full-screen.

I just boot camped and installed it on win7. Runs fine, but at low settings. Medium isn't really playable IMO.

Reagarding "loading", note that Windows 7 has "Superfetch" (intelligent caching). It stores file files you will use in extra RAM determined by some sort of statistical AI algorithms. Therefore, if you have a lot of RAM, that might also conribute a bit to overall performance.

It's unlikely that this affects the performance. Mac OS X also caches files on disk to RAM when they are read, and although it might not use statistical AI algorithms, if you have a significant amount of RAM even a simple caching algorithm will achieve the same effect.

Early 2008 MacBook Pro
10.6.4
2.5 GHz Core2Duo
4 GB RAM
GeForce 8600M GT / 512MB
Defaults to "medium"
Playable (under BootCamp, OSX N/A)

I've only played the game for a few hours but so far so good. The only slow-down that I've noticed was on the intro/main menu with the spaceship in the background. Other than that, the only noticeable issue was during the tutorial when scrolling through the map (moving mouse to edges) causes some black lines.

Frame rate was consistently between 48-55 with a low of 39 with a lot of characters on screen.

I'll have to try the settings suggested on the "Performance Guide" here to see if it will run a little better and cooler.

Mac Model: 2008 Aluminum Macbook
Operating System: OS 10.6.4
Processor Speed: 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Video card: Nvidia GeForce 9400M 256MB shared memory
Screen resolution: 1680 x 1050 Samsung SyncMaster 2233
Default settings: Low
Modifications to default settings: Low
Playability: Runs very well

The HDD is 320GB 7200RPM.

I am playing the digital downloaded SCII on my MacBook with an external display. The game runs well on the lowest setting. Loading time is average. When there's a lot happening in the game, there can be a slight lag.

I would imagine the game would run a bit better on the MacBook screen than on the external display. Enjoy.

I only have 2GB of RAM on my Macbook (similar to yours), will that have a significant impact on the performance of Starcraft II?

Here are some figures

Hey everyone,

I compared Starcraft 2 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on my iMac 24" from 2008. It's running 60% faster on Windows than on the Mac.

So I recommend getting a Windows 7 version and install it via bootcamp for all "serious" Apple gamers... ;)

Here are the numbers for your pleasure: http://bit.ly/dAb8Vd

Thank goodness for the update. I just played Desert Strike on Medium and it ran very smooth until there were loads of units on the map. Finally SC2 is playable!

So has this graphics update fixed the problem of SC2 running so much slower on OSX than Windows (or at least bridged the gap a bit)?

I'm downloading it right now....what sort of performance improvements (if any) are people finding. I wasn't too enthused by the description as it doesn't mention anything about improving performance of SC2 but only fixing a bug that makes it crash (never once happened on my machine).

Depends on what video card your machine has, I guess. I'm seeing no difference with my 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro (still terrible on low), major improvement on my 3.06 GHz iMac (very playable on medium, shader bug appears to be fixed). Probably still runs faster under Windows no matter what machine you have, but at least it now might be playable on the Mac side.

I dont know if this to be expected but i have a 2.66GHz iMac, 2 GBs of ram and the 9400m and i get around 20-15 fps on Starcraft 2.
My graphics settings are:
- 1280 x 800
- medium texture quality
- low shaders, lighting and shadows
- medium terrain
- reflections on
- medium effects
- low post-processing
- high physics
- high models
- 3D unit portraits
- high movies

Is there anything i can do to improve my preformance under OS X? Also i got the graphics update and it did nothing.

Since it seems to be the same deal on the MacBook Pros with 9400M chips, I have to conclude they just didn't update the 9400M drivers. Hopefully those will be coming in a future update.
