nano - the longer cables are mainly for equipment placement (aesthetics I guess) in my work area. I've been using an Anthro Bench for several years - really love it - but am trying to balance and "clean up" the equipment placement during this upgrade cycle.

BTW - NoManIsland - sorry for highjacking your thread
You'll have to figure it out, but if you want longer than 2 meters, it's going to cost you (SAS disks in particular, as they're pricey). :(

nano - you are correct - and for primarily backup / redundancy / mirror / ? sata should be more than fast enough and I avoid some of the cost and limitation on drives that I can use. It looks like there may be a less expensive solution by adding a small tray under the Anthro Bench to carry the external box closer to the Mac Pro.

SATA is way cheaper than SAS disks and/or SAS Expanders (RAID cards are moving to SAS, as they're actually cheaper to produce on the high end than their SATA only counterparts, and are actually faster ). But SAS cards can run SATA disks, and is why IT depts.,... are fine with it.

Cabling always has to be taken into consideration, and in some cases, it does force them to make more expensive choices to meet those requirements.

I'd recommend finding a way to make the EB8-PM work within the 2.0 meter distance limit for the cost savings. Your idea to try modding the desk is a good way to start thinking about the problem IMO. ;) Save your company's cash if at all possible (works in your favor for things such as pay raises and promotions later on). :D

this thread has attracted me.
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Raidon/PD2520/ this is 148 usd raid0
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Raidon/PD2510/ this is 109 usd raid1.

First question is in raid 0 how fast is this?
second question is this bootable?
third question does anyone use it?

I have three pairs of different ssd's

1) intel x-18m's 80gb
2) corsair x64 64gb
3) patriot inferno 200gb these are crazy fast sandforce and don't need this solution.

Now I know that if this is bootable and is sata II fast it stops at 300MB/s . I have intel x-18m 80gb ssd's they have an adapter case to 2.5 so they will fit. they are not super fast ssd's but since I have them and they are free. I would like to buy the raid0 case and use them as a boot drive I get 160gb size and good speed. Has anyone done this with the stardom 2520 unit. I would think that the throttle effect would not happen so much with these intel ssds due to the slow speed that they have.

We actually have 2 different models, the PD2520 is RAID 0 2 X 2.5" hdd's or SSD & the PD2510 which is hardware RAID 1 2 X 2.5" hdd's or SSD.
Both products work with the latest Mac Pro machines.

The PD2500 was RAID 0 or RAID 1 but did NOT work in Nehalem Mac Pro machines.

The RAID 0 product is fixed, but is portable with FW800 & USB2.0 plugs in the back for use offsite.

The RAID 1 product is also fixed, no FW or USB.

Product page here: http://www.raidon-usa.com/stardom/pro_drive_feature.html

Anything else, drop us a line.

Perhaps it's not fixed really or your still selling stock of unfixed product?
I just bought the RAID 0 product & it does not work on either the 2009 Nehalem or 2010 Westmere.
DOA.

I tried it with the intel x25e, x25m, Crucial m225, OWC mercury extrem pro.
It didnt work with any of them.
The SSDs work fine before & after trying to use this raidon enclosure.
My guess is there was no power getting through, the drives were not recognized as being present, and there were no indicator lights on.

I'm looking for something that works.

So you and I are in the same boat and as far as we both know a simple product just does not exist. No one in the entire world has the ability to make this and have it work? For lesser ssd's in raid0 or better ssd's in raid1 it would seem to me this is a must have product.

Hello,

I can't answer your question as it's just a bit over my technical knowledge, but I'm always curious when people use RAID1 for a non-server, non-critical setting.

Would you mind taking 2 minutes to tell me why you want/need RAID1?

Thanks

Loa

So you do want to use a Pro Drive with a RAID 1 set of SSD's.

old thread but was searching on this product and it came up :)

the only reason I like raid 1 for boot and would like to do it with SSD is down time ! I backup YES and RAID IS NOT BACKUP !!!!
I do like SSD punch on boot now :) and wold like to keep that as long as it does not hit performance

but downtime if we are working and freak chance your boot drive dies ! then it takes a moment to get back up and running ALSO it could make us loose some work we were on ? such as a big retouch job etc..
emails that might have went in and out since last clone or BU (at least with time machine a hours worth only) but its purely for safety and no other reason and again that hour to us could be hundreds of dollars lost ! once we get back up and running and recover our lost time and so on ?

are we the extreme ? maybe but anyone making money on a computer can not be down or they are loosing ?

those are my reasons :)

would love to hear how they handle returns etc.. and if anything comes of this ? as it would be a great solution for me :)

thanks :)
