You have to remember that the 15” MBA is also substantially thinner than the 14” MBP giving the illusion of more portability albeit the other dimensions of the 15” are obviously bigger. Additionally, it’s a $700 price difference MSRP. For me;

MBP 16” - desktop replacement
MBA 13” - couch or travel (iPad replacement)
MBA 15” - spouse wanted a big screen and doesn’t care about ‘Pro’ features.
the whole point of a laptop is for travel and mobility, and you have the 13” MBA for that, so you couldve gotten the Mac Studio as your desktop, not a 16” MBP, becuase youre not going anywhere with it, thats what the MBA is for.

thats boring…according to posters here lol
Well, I'm also one of those who said its boring or my own words "cold" lol. But my I couldn't get past the yellow tone in starlight, and my 2018 MBP looks depressing in grey. I'm gonna use it in clamshell 95% of the time, so it might as well go with the whole silver/black theme I got going on with the Studio Display and keyboard

Haha this went straight into “why did you buy a MacBook Air at all?”
How about because the new MacBook Pros look comparatively clunky? Is that a valid excuse? ;D

No, I don’t regret going starlight. The color shift from silver is pretty subtle but enough for one to notice that it’s different and more fun.

Midnight would have been fun but already at wwdc2022 the alarms went off from every journalist and blogger that these were going to be fingerprint-magnets so I wrote that color off directly.

I haven’t reflected that much about wallpapers but I did colorize the classic Mac Finder desktop background into a matching hue because it felt weird having it blue.

Sorrry but it is so funny that if you would have waited only 2 years (talking about your i9 MBP) you wouldve gotten a much better machine for less money…shows you how you never know.

Waited two years and done what in the meanwhile?

The rumors were already wild about an ARM transition when I (meaning my work) bought it. I even set up a contingency plan to be able to swap it out.

In the end though, Avid Media Composer didn’t support Apple Silicon Macs (not even through Rosetta) until almost two years after launch. And the internally developed media management software at work doesn’t run well through windows on ARM.

I don’t regret keeping it. It has served its purpose and added great value to my workdays. It also got me through the pandemic working from home. Also way fewer drawbacks compared to the 2016-2019 15” MacBook Pros.

I avoided starlight because I don't like gold in general. My 13 mini was starlight and I really loved it so also got my iPad mini and MBA 13 in starlight. Not sorry at all. It is quite subtle.

Well, i guess it was worth it then.
Is the i9 still a fast laptop even compared to the m1 and m2 chips? For color grading and video editing. I know that the M chips are better but the i9 MBPs are dropping in price like crazy now used and i was wondering, despite the horror stories about the fans and overheating, if it was still a fast laptop. I mean, it is still an i9 and 32 or 64gb of ram! Cannot be slow! It is crazy, you can pickup a 32gb ram version with an i9 and radeon graphics for only 500 bucks in great condition now!

My findings is that DaVinci Resolve color grading and denoising poses a best-case scenario for the 16" Intel. It makes use of all those cores and threads so it does beat an M1 Air and comes pretty close to the M2 Air as well.

It does this while screaming like a demon, but hey.

The downside is of course the looming end of software support. And the considerably worse single threaded performance makes it pretty meh in other applications such as Photoshop.

Avid I would bet it still has the M2 beat but I haven't done any formal tests. That editor is still stuck on Rosetta though so it feels like a pretty safe bet.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.
I really dont want a screaming demon on my lap when editing, so i guess the M1 Max MBP with 64GB of RAM is for me, thought so anyway...
But i have to say, an i9 and 32gb of ram with a sharp notch less display for 500 bucks in great condition, is INSANE!

There's a way to prevent a Midnight MBA from having fingerprints. I found it here in the forums, and it works. No side effects, not a case, low cost.

In the traditional sense yes but here’s a few things to consider:

- Apple does not make an XDR ProMotion display other than the MBP.
- I’ve always had issues with Apple’s peripherals having intermittent connectivity on current gen iMacs and last gen Mac Minis.
- The only monitor that works fluidly with Macs is the Apple Studio Display which is a large investment and does not have xdr or promotion.
- Resell value. It was almost impossible to sell my iMac that was less than a year old and I had a huge discount on it. Laptops are much easier to sell.
- Apple heavily values the MBP after iPhones and are more likely to get the latest tech which I enjoy.

Bottom line, I’m lucky enough to have owned most of Apple’s products. There’s a reason why I picked my setup and it’s based on my usage and experience. If Apple updated the Bluetooth on their peripherals and had a display with xdr+promotion (dead pixel warranty as well) that doesn’t cost a fortune then maybe I would do a desktop.

Thats true, the best Apple display is not a huge desktop, but in a laptop!
I understand completely why then you went with the laptop. I agree, the Studio Display is not cheap.
And, you gotta love Macbook Pros:p
