I had to work a fulltime job whilst I write my first book. It was tough, but now I'm at the point where I'm able to work part time and dedicate the rest of my time on my writing career. Its working out but it all happens very slowly. So my advice is, choose what you want to do and be patent. Don't go changing ideas every week just because you don't feel any progress is being made. Stick at it and if after a year it isn't working out, then come up with something new. Mistakes and experience help.

Already asked if he could give me his supplier contacts, specifically Apple. He wanted $10k.

Wow, he must be giving you a steep family discount. I wouldn't let that offer dry up! If you're going to be a businessman, you must pounce on all the excellent opportunities that present themselves.

....

Both. Sole proprietorship, partnership or large corporation....

Um ... Pick one. Depending on where you want to go different routes are going to be better or worse. If you don't know where you want to go then it's a bit premature to be looking for directions. I suspect making as money as possible as soon as possible is pretty high on your list, though. Pity.

Hats off to you. I wrote for a few indie magazines as a living about 20 years ago, and have had a novel in the works for ten lifetimes over.

I often think about returning to writing as a full time job. Maybe someday soon.

Still want to do something I love. And make $ doing it.

Insults are very bad. I agree with that. But it's the people who can't contribute that add humor to the thread! Come on I didn't click on this to learn about a business I'm not starting it was to have a laugh.

Haven't we been over this ground before? First item of business is to make a short list of things you love doing. Second item is to spend the time to get good at one of them. Until you've done that there is no point to a third item.

Keep in mind for most people it's a) do something you love b) make a lot of money. Pick one. Actually, that's not really true. The vast majority of people neither make a lot of money nor are they doing what they love. The people who do what they love is very few - and a minority of them make a lot of money. So don't feel to bad if you have to settle for an adequate pay doing a mindless soul sucking job that - horrible as it is - is still better than being tossed out on your ear and into the streets. That is the type of job that most people are destined for. Anything better than that is "exceeding expectations" and requires lots of work, and often some good luck as well.

Ahhh, there are myriad ways to have fun in these threads without breaking the rules!

First, congrats on pursuing your writing career, best of luck!

I agree with the above, people bail too quickly - however, I’d also add that depending on the circumstances (and nature of the business), you sometimes have to adapt quickly, and be able to turn on a dime. Usually it’s not a 180º, just a little pivot to accommodate the market, customers, etc. :)

So, Squilly, the iPad exporting business not going well? Did the Poles not enjoy their iPads?

Not that at all. I don't want to be apart of an international sales company. I've told my brother numerous times I want to handle the internet side of things - SEO, marketing, getting on different venues - he doesn't want me to though, I don't know why. He says something is coming but he's waiting for approval to use logos on his site from the various companies like Apple. I want to start my own too, not just make money for someone else.

Your brother is so full of ****. If, as you have told us, he is an authorized Apple dealer, his agreement with them would already cover the use of their logo.

From him and I quote: "he doesn't know anything that guy and yes I do have rights to use their logo, I just need authorization".

Okay. Because you definitely said something completely different before.

That doesn't make sense. You weren't talked about future tense. You said growing the business. That represents what you're doing now.

"I'm partnering with him and growing the business"
That was the original plan, things changed.

From him and I quote: "he doesn't know anything that guy and yes I do have rights to use their logo, I just need authorization".

just out of curiosity, what do you think "have the rights to use their logo" means if it doesn't include the "authorization" to use the logo? Indeed, how is it even possible to "have the rights to use their logo" if it doesn't mean he's authorized to use it?

I don't know. I thought the same thing. I just typed exactly what he told me. Maybe he's not authorized but he's something else - that I don't know.

Yeah, I know nothing except the fact that I worked for an authorized Apple reseller doing marketing for almost a decade.

I like how you believe everything your brother tells you without question.

Not true. I was skeptical when I heard it.

He should hire you. What's your rate? It's a double edged sword, you make $ and realize he's being legitimate first hand.
