I had the static issue on verizon with a 4s. I returned it and switched back to AT&T. I didn't know the static was verizon or the phones fault but only had 12 days to find out.

I can see the cellphone tower from my house and get full bars with either AT&T or verizon.

lasted update: so i'm not sure how or what and i made sure since last night but the static seems to be gone thankfully :) another user also posted on apples support with the same response i hope everyone with this issue has gotten this resolved as well.

Not mine -- still getting static/echo.

This problem is *intermittent* -- don't celebrate yet. I am convinced the noise cancellation software is somehow involved, because putting the iPhone in Speaker mode fixes the problem (for that phone call, anyway).

I'm having the same problem (live in Sweden). Just Changed my phone today and the problems remains. My wifes phone has the same problems, so this is the third phone in the household with crackling noise and echoes. Hoping for firmware fix but applecare said that they haven't heard of the problem so that will probably not happen in a long time... Switching to Nexus, sorry to say cause the iphone 4s is great otherwise...

Have a similar problem I think. A few minutes into a call the static gets really bad and person on the other end can hear a echo.

Its not really an echo I have, its more like I'm hearing myself in the speaker the excact time i speak, like talking in stereo if you understand..

Yeah that's what I have however it doesn't start immediately perhaps a few minutes into the conversation.

i don't hear the static as bad as it was before but i found out there is a echo on the other end when i add a paid of headphones

I have this issue too. However, I tended to notice it more when the phone was on my left ear versus my right ear, so I figured it was actually my hair rubbing against my ear or something haha (I have long hair). it doesn't bother me too much. Could be the network.

Girlfriend and I are also having the same problem with our launch day iPhone 4s. It's actually pretty annoying and happens frequently. Was using a 3GS prior to the 4s and never had the issue. So I know it can't be blamed on the coverage in my area.

Sometimes I have it right from the start and other times after a few minutes, but mostly all the time, hope its fixable, but as I said before this is my third iphne 4s with the same problem and apple care said they haven't heard about so a fix will probably take a long while..

That's the EXACT reason I exchanged mine yesterday. They gave me a new one, no questions asked.

The latest phone I have has no vibrate rattle, no static in the earpiece, and very minor "normal" faint rattle from the image stabilization. Perfect phone.

I hope it's a software issue that can be resolved with an update because I'm attached to this phone now.

every iphone 4s has this issue, just that most people can't hear it. It is very very annoying.

I have this issue as well. May swap eventually, right now it's not a big deal to me.

Just happened again, 3 minutes into call loads of interference so had to disconnect the headset and put the phone to my ear.

My thoughts exactly. Furthermore, the sound is not audible in a perfectly quiet environment. But as soon as the noise cancellation microphone picks up anything (whether it is your voice, sound coming from the ear speaker of the phone, or any ambient noise in the environment of the phone), the static flares up again - but only for the duration of the noise... Incredibly annoying!
