Any piece of "art" that needs a booklet to describe what it is, is nothing but crap. Acceptable paintings, photos, sculptures, etc. are visual. When they need to be described or hyped in order to convince others they have value, there is no real value.

How is it disrespectful?
Steve Jobs made Apple what it is by insisting on simplicity and elegant design, among other things, but this statue isn't elegant in the slightest; it's his head slapped onto a pillar with a handful of random characters squashed onto the sides. It doesn't embody anything that he championed at all.

Granted disrespectful is a bit harsh a term for me to use, but it's hardly memorialising his accomplishments either. I just don't think Steve himself would like it at all.

Talentless...

Reminds me of this:

Eureka!

Modern art

is the artisitc world's version of trolling. It's all about filling the attention whore need of the artist and/or the displayer.

Haha. Agreed.

And this POC provokes conversation just because it's allegedly chosen by Apple to honour Steve, nothing else.

Really?

I thought Apple was an American company. Why Serbian letters that are only used in Belgrade and Serbia??? It's just plain ugly (and messy)! Steve would not have approved. Also, "they like the imperfections of his work"?!?! There are WAY TOO MANY imperfections. I just don't understand. Me as a three year old could do better.

That is to art as crime is to civilization.

Mymathematical definition of Art:

Art = Talent * Effort * Time

in this case, Time has been, don't know, 2 Days? 2 Weeks?
Effort (as concentration in a diffucult task) is clearly very low, aproximing to 0.
And, at last, Talent is obviously 0.
so it gives a Result of Art=0, so it isn't Art, it is pure Crap!

There can be no mathematical definition of Art.

Is photography not an art now either? It only "takes a second".

I'm glad so many people hate this. Probably means it's doing something right. XD I wouldn't come to Macrumors for art critique!

Choosing Composition, DOF, Shutter Speed and so on, doesn't only "take a second"
Not all photography is art, only a very little %

This statue has no artistic value, it is absolutely horrible.

I actually felt the need to reset my password, login and make my first post on this.

Gahh, nor does making a sculpture. I think we have crossed wires. ;)

I was just pointing out the flaw in his "mathematical" (crazy) qualification of art. Time taken does not in any way increase something's validity as art, was the point. The actual "hands on" time for many photos is a few seconds, learning the art/craft takes time, yes.. In terms of any composition you have to think about it and make decisions.

This sculpture is obviously art, whether we like it or not. I'm not dissing photography (of any kind) at all.

I think it's wholly respectful. Steve never seemed to want everyone else to adapt to his preferred aesthetic. The statue isn't supposed to be what Steve would have liked. He did respect other people despite their differences, and I'm sure he'd have appreciated artists having their take on the matter.

If you were to do an abstract representation of what Steve actually was - not physically, not what he and the media presented him as - It probably wouldn't be anything like Apple's designs. It'd likely be stern looking, imposing mass of contradictions with potentially undertones of cancer and, well, maybe all sorts of other messages. He broke the mould and didn't let himself fit into other people's pre-defined boxes? He was a hugely polarising figure.. In some ways the sculpture is spot on, it's just a case of perspective.

I like stuff that's supposed to leave us asking questions, not present us with easy answers. I don't think it's simply slapped together without though, but even if it was there can be meaning found from that. A lot of things can be done subconsciously.

This sculpture is obviously not pretty. I like that it exists.. I wouldn't want a replica or anything though. :D

art can be anything, but it is always appreciated in the eyes of the beholder, just like beauty.

99% of the people here think it is garbage, therefore that is what it is....
