On a related note, I tried installing Linux on my Razer Blade (specifically pop_os) and tried to run some of my games on using steam/proton and the results were disappointing. Why I bring it up here, is that with the steam deck being linux based and games will be played through the proton/wine layer I'm a bit nervous about how well it will perform.
yes a bit but they will use their own linux distro which might help as they can optimize it towards that goal?

Also you probably will be able to try that https://9to5linux.com/valve-says-st...able-for-everyone-to-download-and-install/amp

Oh I know, and I also heard as you linked too that we can install it if that's our desire.

I also read that you can install windows on it, and since I have an Xbox sub, this may be the route I go as well - but first I need them to deliver it, which sadly, has been delayed.

So now that is 2022, we're about a month or so away from the Steam Deck, I'm really curious as to how well this will perform. I did a Linux challenge Similar to what Linus and Luke did over at LTT and my experiences were similar. The end result was that Linux in general is not ready as a desktop replacement. I know Steam is producing their own distro with its specific tweaks/configurations aimed at leveraging the hardware. My concern is that many of the "gold" games in protondb are not actually gold. Performance issues, stability, lack of sound etc etc. I'm not entirely sure the experience will be as good as running on windows.

I think it’s a really cool concept and it looks like the hardware execution is good, but there are still some potential pitfalls, I’ll definitely keep an eye on it and hope it does well.

Order emails to begin going out 2/25/2022.
I wonder how many people will forgo the purchase, vs those still interested. If they had ordered on time, emotion, especially with the holidays would have kept interest up. Fomo is strong though, and I'll be ordering one, but its been so long, I can't help but think, I'll probably move up in line due to people in front of me cancelling

Normal for people to start thinking about canceling when delays start slipping beyond a product's window of opportunity. My 2nd thought is with storage choice considering SSD prices have dropped to ~$200 for 2TB. Still good bang for the buck overall compared to alternatives with two generation old APU that costs double.

Gamers Nexus tend to be overly long snoozers. The Phawx is a little too deep. Linus Tech Tips last Steam Deck video was more balanced.

We should be seeing emails coming out from Steam today yes?

Competition is good, and Ayaneo now has the Next and LTT did a quick video. Looks really nice. It is expensive, don't get me wrong, but it looks really nice.

While it is 2x the price of the steam deck, that 2x gets you a 5825U, 32GB of ram and 2TB of storage. Conversely, the Steam deck's highest tiered only has 512GB and 16GB of ram. So you get a better CPU, more 2x the ram, and 4x the storage.

Another plus is the Ayaneo was designed to run windows, and so there's functionality built in to using windows via the handheld. Linus did a video, and he's still under the embargo to really say anything about the Steam Deck, he was impressed with the Ayaneo Next.

Now just to be on the counter point, the Steam Deck offers a great experience for a price point that does make it so tempting, so don't get me wrong. Its one thing to say spend between 400 to 700 and get pretty good game experience, and spending 1,500 and getting very good gaming experience.

Perhaps my attempt to game on Linux some months ago, soured my perspective, but I was disappointed in how gold rated games on protondb ran soo poorly. I know steam has been working hard at improving proton, and certainly their version of linux will be tuned and customized for game playing so hopefully that experience will be better. Btw, I cannot justify spending 1,500 for a handheld unit, I barely can justify spending 500.

So I logged into Steam and checked out my reservation and its been updated to show that my unit is expected to ship "After Q2 2022". So in other words, July, August or September.

On one hand, I'm really disappointed, because I had trouble getting my order in, because of them. But also because I still feel that I got the order in very early compared to some others.

On the other hand, it affords me time to fully ponder if this is something I ought to be spending my limited funds on. I'm not projecting an air of sour grapes because I'm not in the first group but rather, instead of buying it based on FOMO. I can sit back consider whether it truly fits my needs AND whether it actually works as advertised.

I was a bit nervous about spending that much money and only have 72 hours to decide to purchase it. I was feeling a bit pressured, thinking that Id regret it, once I saw all of the glowing reviews. I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer but I am an enthusiast. I need to consider where the Steam Deck fits in vs. my Razer Blade which gets the bulk of my game playing when I'm traveling or even just away from my desk.

Make no mistake, I am disappointed, but since its out of my hands, I might as well use it to my advantage and take the time to vet out whether it fully makes sense for me

Mine still says Q2, maybe I'll luck out and get an invite this weekend (probably not, lol).

Now that the reviews are out I’m starting to have reservations about my pre-order. I mean, it’s really expensive (512 GB version), but it sounds like getting games working correctly is going to be a major headache. I’m not sure I’m prepared to spend that long troubleshooting a handheld console.

Perhaps some of that is fixable, but with X thousand games available, fixes are likely to be sourced from the community, and that means endless searching on forums for the latest developments.

The biggest thing, though, is unfixable - the screen just sounds really bad. Not as good as the original Switch, according to Ars Technica. Surely that’s the one area where you don’t cheap out on components. Also, the buttons on the back of the console are apparently not great, and the battery life is quite poor.

I’d be using this almost exclusively at home, since I don’t commute anymore, and I have a PC that plays the same games, better, with less hassle. Maybe Steam Deck isn’t for me after all.

I hear ya. I'm not in the first wave of customers so I have time to figure it out. I'm really interested in it, but at this point, I'm leaning towards not buying it. I'm not at the point where I'll cancel my reservation, but I'm pretty damned close to not pulling the trigger when I do get that email.

Overall my take is that whenever I rush into a decision for whatever reason, I tend to regret it. I'd rather decide that I personally need it for x reasons, rather then, I better buy it now, because I may not have a chance to get it in 2022.

Here's my thoughts and they're really my reasons, other people have their reasons to buy it and I'm not knocking that. I apologize if I'm repeating myself.
  • Price - as you mentioned dropping almost 700 bucks gives me pause - especially for a gen 1 unproven product.
  • Usage - How much will I use this? When I'm home in my office, I have my desktop, other places, like the living room/bedroom I'll grab my razer. What use cases are there that I'll see myself using the Steam Deck over my razer? Traveling, is probably the only real use case and even then I always take my laptop because of being on call, so do I take two devices that can play the same set of games?
  • Performance/game experience. Here's the crucial one, how do my games play? I tend to play older non-demanding games. My favorite game Fallout 76 played like crap on my Razer Blade with Linux installed (PopOS), even though that game has a gold rating on protondb. Will my games even be playable Linux and also on such a small screen (especially with old eyes)?
So called influencers, like Linus are pushing hard at the awesomeness of this product, I've yet to see a really negative review. While Linus was very clear in pointing out deficiencies, he seemed too quick to make excuses for those very short comings. We're getting a hard push by a lot of people saying how great it is, and it very well might be. I'd rather not be pushed to buy it because of FOMO.

Its funny as I type this post, It almost feels like I'm convincing myself NOT to buy it.

it’s really expensive
It is and it isn't. From a pure dollar amount, 650 bucks (or there abouts) is a lot of money for something that only plays games and truth be told, is a nice to have - not a must have. Yet if you look at other hand held devices that its competing against, they're in the 1k to 1.5k range.

The biggest thing, though, is unfixable - the screen just sounds really bad
I have to say so far Ars is the only review where I saw a knock on the display.

I thought Arstechnica said it wasn’t as good as the OLED Switch. Maybe I should read the article instead of watching the video. Lol.

I really do enjoy Ars' reviews, and I agree perhaps I should sit down and go through that review :)
Yeah I see what @garnerx was talking about in the written review. Color reproduction is poor on the Deck compared to even the LCD Switch let alone the OLED one. Mainly cause of a cheap panel. It is probably that Deck2 will fix that, but Deck will have to be a success before that happens.

I think it was known previously that the display had only something like 63-68% sRGB gamut, which is the kind of stat that would get a high-end TV, monitor, phone, or tablet ripped to shreds in previews ahead of launch.

Like, for all the complaints abput the original Sony PS Vita, the one thing that everyone agreed was how amazing was the screen. The Steam Deck should be like that, because it’s also a niche machine, catering for people who care about that sort of thing. I want a screen that befits a handheld that costs more than a PS5.

What machine spec would you be willing to compromise on to get a better screen for the existing price?
