Definitely real, but not used as much these days, IMO.

Even the authentic spots in SF Chinatown use plastic containers now.
 
Every Chinese restaurant we go to uses these for take-out.
The design is meant to be able to be unfolded and used as a “plate”, though it could be messy.
Also, they are cheap and mostly biodegradable.
 
Oh not only are these very really used at some, but not all, chinese places for take out orders, I’ve seen them creatively used by a hardware store for customers when purchasing loose fasteners/nuts/etc AND by a bait shop who would put some seaweed in first and then the sandworms he sold by the dozen!

I remember reading thru this thread when it first came out, and enjoyed the "refresher". Three things:
1) "Won Ton font"? That just seems silly to me.
2) It's 9 pm and I now have the munchies.
3) I've never taken home "leftovers", never done takeout, and since retirement I usually just cook for myself now.
 
I don't live I the USA, but they are certainly real, I've ordered some food and received it in that style of container inside the past 12 months (In Australia).
