I'm really upset about this. He was possibly the greatest character on earth.

I used to watch Steve's shows all the time but got away from it in the last few years. This news makes me especially sad that I didn't keep up with his work.

I think and important thing to remember is that Steve would probably be very upset at headlines like: "Irwin killed by Stingray". He would probably be the first to say that the animal was not to be blamed and I'm sure he would have hated the fear that this will create around Stingrays. Having swam with them (the North American / Caribbean kind) myself, I can say that they really are amazing and benign creatures.

I really admire the Croc Hunter. He was an inspiring TV personality - one of so few.

He wasn't taunting this stingray either, just swimming on top of it with the cameraman.. and it just shot its tail at him. A freak accident, and a terribly unfortunate one at that. I am sure he must be quite aware of the dangers of being close to a stingray, apart from the fact that its hard to dodge an animal while swimming.. most likely he probably didn't even notice it lying on the sea bed.

We don't know that. But, we do know that animals generally attack after giving sometype of warning when they feel threatened. Knowing his past behavior with animals he was probably tormenting it and abusing it.

"Stingrays only sting in defence, they're not aggressive animals so the animal must have felt threatened. It didn't sting out of aggression, it stung out of fear," Dr Bryan Fry, Deputy Director of the Australian Venom Research Unit at the University of Melbourne said.

Sad, nonetheless.

I woke up this morning to my mom telling me that it really sucks. I remeber watching his really early stuff before he was really big and thinking "This guy is an idiot." But you never really expected him to ever die from it. Ill say a prayer today for his wife and kids (and of course for the soldiers families to what a crappy day).

Im shocked, I feel so sorry for his family and for steve himself. Enjoyed his playfulness with animals and nature. He will be missed by many many animal lovers. RIP Steve. edit 3 deaths have occured in Australia by stingray.

Sad news indeed, i thought goes to his family they must be going through a tough time.

On the ABC (in Australia) they just played an old interview Steve did on 'Enough Rope with Andrew Denton'. It was a really good interview. I just finished watching it.

I couldn't find the video - maybe they havent put it up yet. But here is the transcript for any who is interested. link

If they put the video up I would recommend watching it.

Pitty we Australians didn't warm to him as much as those in the US.

i knew he would die from it, but not so soon...

i feel for his family, and its a shocking way to go out, but the man was a git... :p

I can't seem to grasp that he has died; he had the personality of an immortal. Whenever he was on the idiot box, he looked like he had taken far too many caffeine pills. He will live on, just not in physical life...

BTW, the war is stupid and should be stopped immediately.

RIP Steve Irwin, you were one of Australia's finest, you will be missed.
Condolences to the Irwin family, and to all of his family and friends.

He was very informative and entertaining and appealed to all age groups. Obviously, there were some major risks he took in his job. Essentially, he wrote his ticket; it was a matter of when it got punched.

He will be missed, nonetheless. :(

what a legend, I'm not even interested wildlife but I still watched all his programs!!!

Very sad thing to hear really. I went to Australia Zoo in Feb this year and thought it was an amazing place. I don't think we'll see anyone else like Steve ever again and I hope the rest of the family carry on developing the zoo.

This is also the second globally reported thing that's happened recently with that place - the first being Harriet the 175 year old Galapagos Turtle dying there.

I got a fright when I first heard it this morning.

I was on MR, and the TV was on. I wasn't listening properly, and I heard something like "Steve is dead"

I thought it was Steve Jobs for a second:eek:

I was sort of releived when I found out it wasn't:eek:

But still, I liked Steve Irwin, his shows were so full of life:)

Man thats gotta suck. You wrestle crocodiles for a living and end up being killed by a one-in-a-million strike from a stingray while snorkeling!

I don't think he deserved to die, he knew what he was doing. Even though he loved the animals, he knew they were deadly and he respected that. In contrast, people like Timothy Treadwell pretty much got what they deserved.

too bad really. now his kids have to grow up without a dad...

I guess you guys are just waking up to all this - it's a pretty sad night down here, the whole nation is stunned.

Regardless of what you guys think of his television antics his zoo and conservation work were incredible and yet hardly ever screened on US TV. You guys saw all the crazy stuff, we got all the behind-the-scenes stuff, his absolute dedication to conservation cannot be questioned.

He also brought more tourists to these shores than a million of those "Where the bloody hell are you" ads ever could and for those who could not visit our country, he brought a little bit of down here to you guys up there.

For a man to die in such a freakish way just one day after Father's Day is awful, he was totally devoted to his family and to die so soon after celebrating Father's Day is just so tragic - his family were hiking in Tasmania and were out of contact for quite a while when the accident happened.

Such a sad day for us down here to lose a real icon, the US made him famous but he never lost his love for this wide brown land and for that I respect him. He was a charaicture of us all and for this reason I picked on him but in death all this should disappear, he was a good bloke and died too soon.

It's not how Australia feels, though we are all stunned, that's just how I feel.
