I should have pointed out that the gators' mascot is a human dressed in an alligator suit...

Yeah I know, just the mention of a gator though reminded me of the story.

My nephew and I loved watching his show. His attitude was infectious and you couldn't help but share his excitement. Yeah, he was a little low brow, but he loved what he did and there aren't that many people out there like that.

I've always felt that the best way to die is when you're doing something you love. It's really sad that he died so young (he's the same age as I am) but he really made his mark on the world and his sons will have that legacy to grow up with.

yeah guys i found out at like 330 in the morning my friend sent me the link from yahoo news. it was just around the same time in austriala. Out of all the ways that steve irwin could die a stingray!? i mean come on the guys wrestels 500 pound crocodiles for a living. oh well.Crikey.

At least he got to go out doing something he loved, and quickly. Maybe that will provide some inspiration to others to get off their duffs and get out and see that bright thing we call the sun, and find something they love doing.

Animal question here (couldn't find it on Google).

Does the ray's barb disattach from its body when it flicks upward into its victim? I know the ray does not "shoot" the barb out like a dart, but has to use its own body action to engage the barb.

Just wondering if it falls off during the strike.

You mean like a bee's stinger?

I'm pretty sure both happen, sometimes the barb breaks off other times the stingray still keeps it.

I'm pretty sure it detaches, hence the barbs, but I am just trying to confirm/interested.

We have cow nose rays all over the pace here and I have caught them often when fishing. Never considered anything dangerous about them except their plate teeth which can take a finger off. ;)

It depends on the case. Sometimes it does detach and sometimes it doesn't. Often in the times it does detach, it is due to the fact that someone has attempted to pull the stingray off the victim.

Edit: Just noticed someone posted the same thing before me. I think it depends on the species, but rays have the spine wind up falling out and regrowing, so it's very feasible to think that the barb does wind up coming off completely soon after its use. This is where my slight knowledge of rays goes out the window--as I'm not sure if a use would instigate such a thing. Just at the time of use, I think it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't detach.

From Mylife:
Steve Irwin Died

R.I.P Mate. You will be sorely missed, Because who, upon remembering or thinking of you, didn't brandish a smile?

"People do not die for us immediately, but remain bathed in a sort of aura of life which bears no relation to true immortality but through which they continue to occupy our thoughts in the same way as when they were alive. It is as though they were traveling abroad." ~Marcel Proust

I think that Steve's death is even more bothersome just because of the implications it has for his daughter Bindi. Not only has she lost her father at way too young an age, but it would be hard to think that she's not going to have those unbearable, heartwrenching moments later in life of what ifs about that tv show she was involved in and the fact that it was filming for that during which the incident occurred. Horrible. :(

Bout 10 years ago when I was still a kid, I started watching Discovery Channel a lot. And one of the shows I never missed was Croc Hunters. I didnt like the show coz I was interested in wildlife or nature etc. It was Steve who was always such a joy to watch, made me hook up to TV whenever I saw him. He made catching a croc look so easy. The guy was just wonderful. Always seemed to have a lot of positive energy around him.

He really didnt deserve to die so young.

Even though I m an atheist, I`ll still pray to God that his soul rests in peace. Thats the only thing I can think of doing for the guy right now.

Wow!

I heard about it on 1:30 AM on sunday! Imagine how his kids must feel:(

Sad news - I liked the guy a lot.

I feel horrible for his wife and children.

RIP Steve.....

So what do we do now? Will Animal Planet continue to play his shows? I haven't watched the Croc Files or whatever it was called in about two years. This news makes me want to watch and I feel rather sad that there will be no more "crikey!" shows to come.

They're showing his stories on Animal Planet, right now. They just showed the birth of his little girl where he helped with the delivery. Man, that's so sad. He was really a very tender hearted soul.

A quote from our 5pm newscast producer:

"Man, it's a good thing the Crocodile Hunter died today, otherwise we would have had nothing to report!"

I hate news people.

I feel so bad for his wife and kids, they seemed to be such a tight-knit family.

:(
