In a companion piece to the earlier article highlighting Apple CEO Steve Jobs' interview regarding location tracking issues, All Things Digital turns the spotlight to the white iPhone 4, sharing comments from Jobs and Apple marketing boss Phil Schiller regarding the difficulties in bringing the product to market."It was challenging," Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller said during a joint interview with CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday. "It's not as simple as making something white. There's a lot more that goes into both the material science of it - how it holds up over time... but also in how it all works with the sensors."Schiller noted that the company thought it had all of the issues in hand when it introduced the iPhone 4 last year, but it obviously took a lot more work than expected to obtain the quality finished product the company demanded.

Jobs reported that the company's experience with the white iPhone 4 has benefited the company in a number of ways, most obviously bringing some of the lessons learned during the development process to other product lines such as the iPad, where the second-generation device shipped in both black and white from day one.

The white iPhone 4 finally goes on sale tomorrow, although some retail outlets around the world have been letting units out to customers early.

I don't get it... They made white iMacs and Macbooks for years. The top of my Mac Mini is also white. So was the original iPod.

Now for some reason it's a huge challenge for them to make something white?

That's white plastic. This is glass. In case you didn't know, you're comparing two different materials.

Apparently, the sensors were affected by the white body. This makes sense as it reflects/absorbs light differently than black.
I get your sentiments though...IMO, they shouldnt have showed off the white models until they were ready to deliver.

Exactly. Haters having short memory. Who would have thought?

To be honest, they didn't say much.

All they said, they were having a delay and they are going to ship soon. That's it.

They could have released a statement that its getting harder for them to complete the manufacturing; the product is delayed infinitely until new release date is announced.

The problem is, Apple off of all the companies should have said this before.

Why? It's not about the shareholders or media, its about the countless number of people waiting for the white iPhone including me. I for once agree with Full Of Win (Really) that Apple should have released a statement 6 months back so that people should have just let it go and not wait for it.

Yes, Apple didn't do a good job handling this situation.

EDIT: On another note it is possible that they didn't want to degrade their product by giving us an insight. That is a selfish interest but anyone would have done that. I thought Apple being more consumer-centric won't.

All is good though, I'm picking this cutie for my mom :D.

The white iPhone looks so nice.

They definitely did learn a lot.

I just have to wonder about the other mobile device manufacturers, if they even put a quarter's worth of effort and attention to their products as Apple does. I can just imagine the CEO of HTC saying, "slap some white on that EVO and call it a day."

absolute marketing genius.. how to (almost) sell a product twice. I love the iPhone don't get me wrong..

Last ditch effort to get full price for iPhone 4.

In 2 months time, the iPhone 4 will drop to $99 to make room for the iPhone 5, making iPhone 4 the single best value smartphone on the market.

I like the way Apple handles its products, mostly.

I don't think it was their intention last summer to begin selling the white iPhone 4 tomorrow. It has nothing to do with marketing, only finally fulfilling their promise of a white iPhone 4.

That problem gets even worse if the white paint starts to yellow; with a worsening state of yellowing over time, those sensors aren't going to work properly ever again.

I assume part of the new process is some way to ensure the phone stays white.
