it's still white plastic, except with the iphone it's behind glass.

No, it isn't. It's paint directly on glass. Furthermore, did you even read their comments? They said they had problems with how the sensors worked with the white paint. The MacBook's and Mini's sensors work in very different ways and aren't dependent on the materials around them.

IMO, they shouldnt have showed off the white models until they were ready to deliver.

Agreed.

Interesting to think how different things would have been if they hadn't announced the white iPhones until like, last week. Everyone on here bitching about how long they may have to wait for fifth-gen iPhone and then bam, a white iPhone 4.

Not as simple as making something white... not like it was for ipod 1g/2g/3g/4g/video, iphone 3g/3gs, ibook/macbook, imac g4/g5/intel and lets not forget the original apple remote...

yeah there's legit reasons for the delay, just really funny that apple has a hard time releasing a white product.

"Schiller noted that the company thought it had all of the issues in hand when it introduced the iPhone 4 last year"

They obviously thought they were ready to deliver, they probably even had them rolling off the production lines (apparently lots of people at Apple had them over the last year, I bet they had a lot of extras laying around).

i believe there might have been a issue at the start but it was fixed pretty soon and they just held it back so they can push the iPhone 5 further away while milking the same thing twice in the mean time. smart move on their hand tbh

 I don't see why that's funny... The products you listed don't even use sensors that the iPhone uses so maybe that's why it's not as simple as making something white. Did you even read the article?

So... let's think about IF Apple had said something about manufacturing problems months ago... what would people say? The haters and media would've trashed talked about how "The Great Apple" can't even put out something white (much like some on this board) --- it would've become a negative thing. Better to not say anything and let people either get the black model or go get some other brand... a lost customer isn't great but negative publicity is more costly, IMO.

I don't get it... They made white iMacs and Macbooks for years. The top of my Mac Mini is also white. So was the original iPod.

Now for some reason it's a huge challenge for them to make something white?

Ya, you're probably right. This is just a big coverup. They just wanted to piss everybody off for almost a year.

Especially with all these 3rd party people making white conversion kits. How come they can figure this out but it took apple so dang long?? Go figure!

It's really, really hard, because first you have to make iPhones of every color and reverse them through a prism.

People fail to realize how careful Apple has to be when releasing a product. RIM releases crap every year and people excuse it but we all know that if apple released a product that had paint chipping, discoloration, etc. the media would rip them to shreds over it. Take antenna gate for example. I'd rather them take their time and get it right than sell me a product and me watch engadget, gizmodo and the news stations rip it to pieces because of flaws.

Haters will hate.

Because these conversion kits don't work. The LED flash bleeds through, the cases paint chip etc. Why would they mass produce a failing case like that? These conversion kits were knockoff parts by people looking to make a quick profit.

They could have said this 6 months ago. Really.

No, they couldn't as they did not know then how long it would take.

Why they owe anybody details>

Refund any order money , apologize. Tell them technical difficulties.
We won't ship it until we think it's right.

End of story!

Yes, you don't get it.

Your mini is all plastic.

The iphone has a combo of mainly glass coated white and some plastic.

this post is so true

I think you missed the joke. Doesn't matter that the other products don't have sensors in them - Apple for the longest time was releasing white computers, white peripherals, white everything - before the transition to aluminum unibodies of course - while all the PC manufacturers were going with black/beige. Now all of a sudden they can't get one of their flagship products to come out properly in white.
