Things change a bit if you knew you were dying. If you read the book, you'd know anything he told Issacson was fair game, but at least Issacson didn't reveal too much out of respect for him and Apple.

doubt it.
Steve had too much at stake with Apple to spill the beans. For me he manipulate this story. Not that I don't think something revolutionary could come out of it but I doubt he gave too many specifics to Isaacson.

I guarantee that Apple has more imagination than you do, so I'm sure they've figured it out. Everything seems 'good enough' until you see something drastically better. Most people don't have that kind of foresight and imagination.

I was quaintly imagining that a real revolution in TV would involve no physical product, but as you guarantee, that's positively backward compared with Apple.

So, Steve Jobs "cracked" it and the "crack was Siri even though at the moment of the interview Siri was some other company's product. Interesting spin.

No clue what you're saying.

Siri was acquired by Apple on April 28, 2010. Steve's last talks with Isaacson were about 2 months before he died - this would be around August 2011. Seems like Siri was at Apple for 15 months or so before the interview.

Siri is definately not the 'crack' anyways.

Irregardless, when someone says they cracked/figured out how to do something, it doesn't necessarily mean that they have the means to actually do it just yet. If I said I 'cracked' how to make a time machine, it means I know how to do it, it doesn't mean that I have the money, resources, or expertise to do it just now.

What the heck is that awful setting they have him in?

Actually this TV show is one of the most serious and respected in Brazil, having interviewed hundreds of celebrities, businessmen and politicians over at least the last 30 years.

It's called Roda Viva ("Live Wheel") and owes this "awful" (not really) setting to its name, which means a round table of journalists surrounding the person being interviewed, normally live (instead of being previous recorded).

Too bad I am not currently in Brazil; this program is really excellent for anyone wishing to see good interviews.

p.s.: And what's all this whining about an "ugly" studio anyway? Do you expect a serious interview to look like American Idol? Brazil's private channels already have what is regarded as some of the best design, technological and creativity resources in the world of TV. Get a grip, guys.

p.s.2: By the way, what an EXCELLENT interview, the best I've seen so far with Isaacson. The unique setting of Roda Viva is able to extract the most information from interviewees as few TV shows can do; definitely worth watching.

If anything, the "crack" will probably involve some combination of Airplay, the iPhone, and the iPad. Apple has always been about simple interconnectedness between their various devices. If you ask me, the AppleTV would basically be a big screen extension for their iDevices without needing any extra hardware.

Browse for a movie on your iPad, press a button, watch it on the big screen TV. It'll sell more iPads, and the iPads would sell more TVs. It's simple and elegant. The only downside being that you have to own an iDevice to get the full experience.

Class

This, to me, demonstrates just how classy this guy is. Obviously, Steve also saw this in him, which is why he allowed him such access.

That's kind nice of Isaacson. The guy must be fit to burst and spill the beans. Yes, Apple and Jobs have been looking at building a TV. It's going to be totally awesome. We will all be posting "take my money meme pictures". We may even buy "DLC" to the biography which talks about the TV from Jobs point of view based on the interviews he had. We can :apple: nerd out :D.

Who else is more excited about Apple's new TV endeavor than the iPad 3?

Personally, I really can't say that I am. Honestly 'smart' TVs don't get my tech heart pumping because at the end of the product cycle you're left with basically two something that's expensive to upgrade instead of one. 'Smart' box + dumb TV/display/projector makes far more sense to me, especially as both are moving forward at a fairly rapid rate. That way you can upgrade either the "Smart" or the "Dumb" piece as you have money/want.

Depending on how tomorrow goes I may be eyeballing an AppleTV (the box) for the first time.

Tv

I don't get all the "classy" comments. If Steve told him something it was fair game to be in the book, period. I'd bet that Walter just didn't want to publish something that could turn out to be untrue. Not that Jobs would lie to him, but what if Jobs gave him specific details of what was to come and then for whatever reasons, technical problems, design changes etc, the product isn't exactly as Jobs had said it would be? Or maybe they decide not to make it after all? Think of all the outrage that would cause.

For my money, people should remember that "TV" is a, programming, b, a screen, and c a selection device. On the screen.

Apple can put out a storage-free device that hooks onto a large screen, without the screen. That's your TV. Or they can make screens. Or you can use others. And then, there's the "software subscription," the "TV Store."

Hope it's an actual, real freekin' big azz TV cause the wife says she will definitely buy one. Will be a shame if the current Vizio has a little accident...

Perhaps you could arrange for a thief who's very particular about what he steals.

Would love a big TV, but I still think that market is too much of a race to the bottom. Exactly the kind of product that Apple wants to have nothing to do with.

It's a good thing he's not like Julian Assange, or every Apple secret that he knew would have been made public 5 minutes after he finished his interviews with Jobs.

Well I should hope so. What kind of idiot would he be to know Jobs and Apple that well and then give all the details away a year ahead of launch? Pretty surefire way to ensure no one ever trusts you with anything again.

What kind of an idiot would Jobs be if he told him something that could damage the company? I think the guys blowing smoke. No way Steve told him anything top secret.

Oh NO~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Projective scenario.

1) Mr. Isaacson goes home.

2) The house is messed around, and his wife and children are missing.

3) Find a note from Samsung, claiming "We have your family, tell us everything about S.Jobs' TV plan, or you will be sorry."

4) 6 months later, Samsung announces iTV, claiming that "We didn't poached Apple's vision. Every TV is thin, rectangle, and glass-fronted."

"...maybe, that was unfair to Apple before they produce the TV…"

This isn't before they produce it, it's a the.

Consider a future Apple Television confirmed.

i still don't understand why apple would need to make it's own tv in order to implement a new tv product. why can't it be something like the current apple tv that plugs into your existing tv? it doesn't make sense that i would have to go out and buy a brand new tv just to use apple's service. what if i bought one not too long ago?

how about this for a theory:

apple is all about incremental steps and today was more about a resolution jump on the ipad .. on the apple tv front - today's annoucement takes them up to 1080p since their CDN can now handle the extra bandwidth for the 1080p movie assets - and as they continue to scale more services they'll be able to handle higher resolution assets as well (it's pretty trivial for those making the movies to transcode at higher bitrates and frame sizes) .. however the other side of the industry (particularly the broadcast industry) takes much longer to standardize and get a higher resolution picture into people's home since there are so many players - so if apple were to make their own displays (which they still do) and tailor it to their CDN - they should be able to deal with higher resolution assets much faster than the rest of the industry

now if you also marry the ipad or the iphone or the ipod touch as the controller for the set - you've got a nice way of separating out metadata of what you're watching from the actual picture and sound that's coming out the set .. so I'd expect some sort of de-coupling between this into common devices (now) that work together .. it's the same sort of thing that nintendo is beginning to do with the next generation wii, and I'd only expect this to get better in other areas of the industry
