People saying you shouldn't put things like Jobs, alas, he should have said it nicer - let me ask you this; Would The Beatles been as successful if Lennon wouldn't had his attitude? I doubt it.

There's no way of knowing. It could even be possible the Beatles would've been even more successful if Lennon had a different attitude.

One thing I wish ESPN would do now is write iOS apps for the iPhone and iPad that integrates all of their online services into a single app. Imagine launching the app and you can see the latest ESPN stories, playback video highlights, comment on stories, and listen to ESPN Radio live, all using your current ESPN account (or ESPN Insider paid account).
The problem with that is that your cable or satellite provider is paying ESPN a pretty hefty monthly fee -- starting at $4.08 per connected household for the main ESPN channel alone (source) -- for the rights to carry ESPN on basic cable. That's ESPN's cash cow. It's also happens to be a major point of contention between ESPN and the cable/satellite providers; they would like to see ESPN moved to a sports tier so people who wanted ESPN would pay for it, and those who don't, wouldn't. (Theoretically, subscribers would either get a lower monthly subscription fee or, more likely, the cable/satellite providers would make more money.)

But that's not the bargain, the main ESPN network is either on the basic cable/satellite tier or it's not on cable/satellite at all.

Why is that important?

Because if ESPN starts providing most or all of that same content to mobile providers (through iOS applications or whatever) so customers can cut the cable/satellite cord, then ESPN starts to have a huge revenue problem when the cable/satellite providers start to revolt against the current system. ESPN would either have to limit iOS content to those people it can verify are already paying a cable/satellite provider service (and that doesn't address the issue of lost ad revenues) or they are going to have to charge you a hefty monthly subscription fee that is probably only going to be available as an annual subscription (in order to prevent people from, say, jumping on only during football season). This from people who, as a whole, complain about 99¢ apps in the App Store.

Don't think for a minute that EPSN isn't trying to figure out how to tap into iOS as an additional revenue stream to give you what you are looking for, they just have a fine line to walk because current cable/satellite contract revenues pay for the contracts that give them the rights to air NFL/MLB/NCAAF/etc. content. That content might be tougher to account for with literally millions of finicky individual iOS subscribers who could potentially jump off the ESPN bandwagon at any time.

Jobs can be a real dick. I don't think he gives a **** about Disney.
You'd be wrong about the Disney part. Jobs cares a lot about Disney. He's the largest shareholder in the company, and more of his personal wealth comes from his Disney holdings (via Pixar) that anything he's ever done at Apple.

I agree that Jobs cares a lot about Disney. However, I don't think he thinks very highly of most of the stuff that Disney puts out. I'm sure he'd would like a revamp of the Disney Stores and he'd probably feels that Disney puts out too many crappy sequels to very popular franchises (e.g. Cinderella 3, Little Mermaid 2, etc).

In fact, the whole sequel thing is what led Pixar to have such a strangle hold on Disney. Jobs engineered a coup that axed Mike Eisner and put Jobs as the single largest individual shareholder of Disney.

+1

At Apple and Pixar, Jobs could bounce out the incompetents. He has almost no power to do that at Disney, excepting exerting some influence at the CEO/COO/CFO levels of DIS (the publicly traded parent company). Certainly not at the level of the divisions (Studios, Parks & Resorts, Media Networks, Consumer Products) or at any of the individual companies like ESPN...

Yeah, after Cars 2, I'm not sure that the Disney mindset isn't affecting the Pixar brand when you would have hoped to see it work the other way around.

omg jobs be more professional please!

He can be very eloquent:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY85UiPBAo0

And he can be very rude. But it's exactly that kind of "rudeness" from *this* man in particular, that this industry seems to need. Badly. There is really no other way it can sink in. Especially when there is so much stagnation around him. And especially when that stagnation is going to affect his bottom line if he doesn't say anything.

I would have immediately disbanded that phone had Jobs told me it was anything less than "awesome." He's like a tech God, listen to him, you'll succeed.

He is not a tech God, please, he is a Marketing God, big time difference.

He has the knack for understanding consumers and that is way more important that some Tech God crap. ;)

We love Steve because he understand marketing and puts tech people in their place. Tech people would make things that most of us with like but would not want to own. :D

Not defending Jobs, but a lot of stuff said on books doesn't necessarily mean it's true or it's taken out of context. I mean, look at the bible.

Steve Jobs is brilliant, and Apple is basically an extension of him. That being said, it doesn't sound like he has changed much from these days:

Every time I hear a "Steve Jobs is an a$$hole" story, I think of this scene, which was burned into my brain when I saw "Pirates of Silicon Valley" on TNT back in 1999.

It's almost like he's an idiot savant, like Mozart or Bobby Fischer. Kind of like "Rain Man." A guy who's absolutely brilliant at a few things, but terrible at others. Maybe he has a mild case of Asperger Syndrome. Just a thought.

It's not fair to compare fiction and non-fiction. We all know Steve Jobs exists.

I would like to know what Ive, Cook, Schiller, Forstall, etc..., really think of Steve. That would be interesting Someday...

According to Wozniak, the personalities of the characters in that movie were accurate (look up the movie wiki). So, his bluntness is a part of him. It does seem like a contradiction with his spirituality and Buddhism beliefs.

If Steve interviewed someone in his condition (especially before he became ill), what would he say? Scary thought...

Yeah...I'm sure the Disney shareholders really care about how well Apple is doing.

"Doing well financially" is meaningless. The real question is: are they attaining their potential maximum? Would they be doing better if Jobs were replaced by someone who actually came to the meetings? Companies don't say: "F it, we're making a profit, we don't really need to try unless we start taking losses..."

how do you throw out a member of the board when he is also that company's largest shareholder ?

Looks like Steve has some mental problems as well. Seriously, all the other guy did was introducing himself?
Actually, it's more likely that Jobs, like Eric Schmidt, has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism that makes those who have it completely unable to comprehend social norms on an intuitive basis. Some people with Asperger's have a high degree of success in innovative technical areas due to their ability to "think different".

Edit: I see a number of members beat me to the point.

ha ha ha I wish I could have been a fly on the wall, When he said that. :D. There is no one like Steve Jobs, he's the main reason for Apple's success, when he returned Apple was 90 days from bankruptcy, look at it now its surpassed Microsoft in May 2010 in terms of revenue :D its a great time for Apple.

I know some people think its harsh, but no one gets anywhere being too soft on people or things let slip over time.

:apple: Forever

It surpassed Microsoft in revenue but not percentage profit. If you make $1m from $1m, technically, you didn't do as well as the guy that made $800k from $500k. ;)

I can't believe how many people are trying to rationalize or defend his behavior. The guy is a total and complete dick. Nobody disputes his brilliance and vision or how he single handily turned Apple into the juggernaut it is. But I'm sorry - you can be a driven and demanding boss without being a world class a$$.

So if he was a dick?

Last night I went to a Bob Saget show and the guy is a dick, but guess what? I enjoyed the show..

Actually, no you can't. It's what separates them. To be truly brilliant and truly driven you can't give a ***** about anybody. Not me either, but I've seen it enough times and they are all like that.

Don't agree with this at all. You can be brilliant, driven, and push your staff hard and demand perfection without crapping all over people.

Crapping all over people I think not,I'd like to think I'd have a crisp observation or two if I ever met Jobs (I'd probably babble like a schoolgirl on whizz in reality). Speak the truth to power, a good motto to have and not just for journalists.

A guy on TV the other day was plugging his book about psychopaths. Psychopaths are not necessarily mass murderers or anything like that. They have traits that can also make them effective captains of industry.

I forget the name of the book or the author, but I plan on finding out and reading it. Sounds interesting.

He was only on for a couple of minutes, but I immediately thought of Jobs based on what the rumors are about how he interacts with people.

I think the deal here with Steve Jobs is that he's has a low tolerance threshold for idiots or fools ... well at least people that he perceives as idiots or fools. I know a bunch of people like this. Some are brilliant and some are not. They're all dicks, however.

Sometimes brutal honesty is refreshing. Sometimes I want hot air blown up my backside. Life is short, deal with it.

Anyways, I'm sure that Steve would be more courteous with people that he respects. I guess the issue is that there are probably very few people that he truly respects.
