They should just buy Dropbox and replace iDisk with it. Dropbox is totally reliable, simple to use, fast, keeps file change history, and lets you individually password protect shared folders (with iDisk you can only lock the whole thing, or nothing).
Absolutely! Dropbox clobbers Apple's offerings!!

MobileMe is dead. Long live Dropbox!! The only way MobileMe will still exist if it matches Dropbox in space, speed and reliability. I only use MobileMe for syncing address book/calendar with my iPhone. The other features aren't too useful.

Dropbox supply EMail, Contacts, Calendar, Gallery (Find my iPhone now free) ????

Apple has never done the cloud well at all. Not email, not iDisk, nothing. It's gonna have to get a helluvalot better in 2011 for me to pay $99. for something that Gmail and Dropbox deliver extremely well for free!!

I'm from Europe and iDisk is working just fine for me (even on 3G).

Well I would most certainly think it wouldn't get any worse.

Looks like Steve just said what that guy wanted to hear. After all, he asked for Steve to tell him it would get better, and thats what he said.

BUT I would love to see an improvement. I hope to be getting mobile me soon to keep my Laptop and desktop in sync and hopefully a new phone (if it ever comes to verizon).

I have had issues with calendar sync. Birthdays appear numerous (I counted one as showing over 20 times!)

I really got pissed off when my twins were born in the middle of the night after a difficult labour. I tried to phone family to let them know all was ok and all my contacts had gone. Really pissed me off.

I'm synchronizing 2 Macs, iPhone and iPad with MobileMe - I had a problem only twice in 4 years but I've resolved it by doing backup of the contacts and restoring again after erasing all of them everywhere. Never had a problem with calendars.

What's the issue, people?

New Name for MobileMe, please!!

A new name would be nice...
YES!!!!! MobileME is such a lame name!!! I really liked .Mac better - but even that aside, MobileMe just sounds childlike, goofy, and unprofessional.

Why is this news? Of course he's going to say it's going to get better. What marketing person would say, "nope, we're just keeping it as it is/It's good enough?". At least any marketing person who knows anything about marketing, and Steve comes off as some one who isn't completely stupid about that stuff.

Until anything happens or he at least says how it is going to get better or what they are doing to improve it, it's just words (unless he specified how it is going to get better or what they are doing to improve it I fail to see how this is worthy of even bothering with cause of course that's going to be the basic answer to that question!).

It's the fact that he answered this person. He could have skipped the email but because of his knowing that MobileMe is going to get a lot better next year, the email was interesting enough to have him reply.

If he wasn't going to improve MobileMe much in 2011 he wouldn't have replied to the email.

The xxx@me.com email sounds selfish to me. I'd love to make this my "serious" email address (for job applications, etc.), but to non-apple users, it seems self-centered.

When someone says you're from the "me" generation, it's not a compliment.
agree 100% - was just about to post that even before reading your note. the @me.com just doesn't "ring" right on my resume to me. I actually use @mac for my e-mails, and if I had to change, I would discontinue use of the service.

I've actually stopped using mine now and won't be renewing during this month (end of my contract with MobileMe) as I don't find it to be THAT good for the price that I am paying for it. Currently using Google Sync and Dropbox works fine and much faster for me.

I'll probably consider renewing once MobileMe has seriously sorted out its speed issues, iDisk actually becomes more like DropBox with faster speeds and ability to have revisions of files updated/changed/deleted etc., the Mail on the website is sped up a lot and the viewing of older emails isn't so slow!

Basically, once MobileMe speeds up I'll get it again.. Maybe.

MobileMe is based towards the lowest common dominator, i.e,. the illiterate computer user who can barely turn on their machine! MobileMe name will appeal to these users.

This is why Apple will never add any sort of scripting languages or allow more than one personal domain. MobileMe will remain very basic. These users will never need such functionality.

I'm afraid that without some major changes, .mac/MobileMe is going to go the way of eWorld (and I've been a .mac/MobileMe subscriber since '02).

MobileMe is going to have to get much, much better to get me to switch from FastMail.

I bit the bullet and just renewed because I got it for $42 at Amazon. My expectation is that I wean myself off the .mac address (damn, had it over 10 years) and not renew next year. Make me change my mind Apple.

I am slowly getting to this point myself. Apple should be raising the bar in this area, not racing to catch up. It is just not like them.

You'll get 500MB (2.5GB) more space using that link to sign up. You get even more space if you're a student. Once you use it, you won't go back. Promise!

You know you can do that syncing with Google for free, right?

From .Mac to .Me to .Zero

I paid my $99, and my wife's $99, for years. Hated it when I finally surrendered to @me.com, though it seemed pretentious and teenage-y.
Everything seemed either missing or too slow or too half-done, to pay $99 for -- or even two cents -- when FoxMarks was free, to boot.
I hung on when Steve Jobs said it would get better the last time. "It" didn't.
His less than chatty response this time to an email plea for a workable function cuts no ice with me. I won't believe it until I see it and test it for 30 days, if that will be allowed.
I just don't understand how an outfit as terrific and innovative as Apple could blindfold itself to MobileMacMe...Whatever. :apple:

A family pack is ~$76 at Amazon. It's the way to go if you need more than one mobile me account. I use two accounts and at $38 a year per person, I'm satisfied with the service. It has gotten much better than the first year. I wrote Steve Jobs the first year asking for a refund because it was so bad. He gave me one. Very few problems with syncing nowadays. But I regularly archive my calendars and address book just in case the unthinkable happens.

That's just it, the best ideas and products out of Cupertino have nearly always been someone else's, Apple usually just buy the 'right' companies. All the half assed ideas are 'genuine' Apple trademark!

Great concept, poor execution

I was a .mac and then MobileMe user (2 years total). I bent over backwards to make it work because I loved the idea of my calendar and contacts staying synchronized. In the year it worked o.k. with my MacBook and iPod touch. When I decided to add our iMac to the mix, duplicates ended up everywhere, even though I completely wiped out the iMac data first and had customer service on the phone guiding my steps. After a two days, a couple of hours each, wiping the data and removing the accounts off all three devices, we were able to get it working after restoring the data to one computer and setting the accounts up again.
A few months later, same problem, same painful process. I decided to keep just the iPod Touch and MacBook in sync. Then I bought an iPhone. Adding that third device again totally screwed up everything. After about eight hours with tech support giving me a runaround and wiping everything (twice) before rebuilding, it still didn't work. I quit MobileMe and defaulted to manual syncing the phone to MacBook and gave the iPod away.
Considering more than twelve hours were invested to get the system working three times, it would have been better to never have used the MobleMe at all. Like I said - GREAT CONCEPT, POOR EXECUTION. I HOPE THEY FIX IT!

Whew glad he cleared that up!
