Should be decade...

No other American company has come from near bankruptcy in the late 90's to the 2nd biggest company in the WORLD in 2011 and it was all due to 1 man and his vision.

Just cause he died? I was listening to Howard Stern, he literarly thinks that Steve Jobs personally invented the mp3 player and the touch screen. The touch screen in my Nintendo DS and pocket PC both in 2004 were invented by Steve Jobs. That's the reality for so many.

Yup, the only thing Steve Jobs accomplished in his life is dying. Thanks for the insight. The rest of your comment is too idiotic to comment on. There's been a million and one well-written opinion pieces about Sj being one of the most important men this generation has seen, and none of these people believe what you've stated.

BTW, since you've been 'Apple free' since 2010 and have no interest in the company, can you explain what posesses you to spend your time trolling Apple forums, with classless posts like the above? Is your life that meaningless that you derive some sort of sick pleasure from doing so? Pathetic is an understatement. I don't think anyone cares enough about 'how much money you saved' by plastering that in your sig. You 12 years old?

Time's "Person of the Year" award long ago lost any meaning when they started getting cute by choosing "the computer" or "you". If you're going to have a "Person of the Year", it should be an individual every year.

Of course, it's not like Time had any credibility to start with, but c'mon. Anything to sell a few more issues.

Things invented or brought to the mainstream masses by S. Jobs:

- Personal computers (Apple II)
- GUI interface (Mac)
- Movie computer animation (Pixar)
- Legal music and movie digital purchasing (iTunes)
- Personal music players (iPod)
- Smartphone (iPhone)
- Tablet device (iPad)

Also, the WWW was invented by T. Berners-Lee on a NeXT workstation, another one of his creations.

Odd choice, given the criteria as "a person, couple, group, idea, place, or machine that "for better or for worse, ...has done the most to influence the events of the year. This was probably his least influential year at Apple, a year where the company hasn't done much besides iterate on it's existing products.

I think Mohamed Bouazizi would be more appropriate. Granted I would be surprised if many people knew his name (certainly I had to look it up) but if you are only looking at this year he has been far more influential.

What Did He Say?

Whatever Brian Williams said to comedian Seth Meyers, is indecipherable. I have no idea what he's talking about. "Look at this one block." Yeah, what about it? What is he looking at? "Piece of glass and plastic?" Uh, yeah, okay, glass and plastic, yeah . . Steve Jobs? Did Jobs invent glass and plastic? "You can make things big or smaller." Okay, Jobs made things bigger and smaller?

I think I know what Brian Williams was trying to saying, but if that is part of his nominating speech or entry for Jobs, he ought to go back to reading news copy written by others.

Perhaps Williams actually said things about Jobs which were more germane to the work he did on his life. If he did, MacRumours should have quoted that.

I'm surprised that the quote presented here has produced such a response. Read it again. Its idiotic disjointed drivel.

I know reading the article , referenced web pages and other comments is a little much to ask before you post but fyi the award is only related to what a person has done this year.

Howard Stern?

You didn't actually listen to Howard Stern to hear anything approaching reality or rational thought, did you? I'm surprised Stern didn't spend an entire show laughing about Jobs and putting him down. That Stern is actually in awe of someone other than himself, is amazing.

Lol, Howard Stern is an idiot. :apple:

It's not exactly a big honor anymore, I mean really, even I got to be Time Magazine's Person of the Year in 2006 and I haven't done anything too extraordinary.

They missed their chance many times. To hell with them.

Agreed.

He could have been awarded it any year. Last year would have arguably been a better one. The iPad + iPhone 4 did more to change the world than did Facebook, that year. I don't want to sound harsh towards Zuckerberg or anything, but, come on, how much did he really change? Sure, I upgraded from MySpace to FaceBook, but I feel like they were both similar enough that he didn't really revolutionize it... he just made a better product so everyone moved to it. Plus Zuckerberg has only done Facebook, whereas Steve Jobs + Apple have done so much more.

Still, Steve Jobs deserves it. I suppose now is better than never.

I'd pick Jack Dorsey over Steve Jobs for 2011.

This award is for people who changed the world this year, and Twitter helped launch the Arab Spring. And the Arab Spring was kind of a big deal.

Full disclosure: I've never used Twitter, but I do recognize its impact.

No, it's more than that

That's a valid point, still, I don't know if he would have been nominated if he hadn't died.

What is resonating with everyone -- me included(!!!) -- is how he chose to live his life knowing that his days were numbered. Amazing. Steve's is an original and inspiring story. Don't be so trite and callous.

Yes, I can feel the reality distortion field is strong in this one...

Still let Jobs have his POTY award. Certainly better than any of the usual DBs

Wasn't this what Steve wanted way back then, but never got? Too bad he wasn't here to see this.

Years ago he wanted it and thought he was getting it, but they awarded it to "The Computer" and included an interview with Steve Jobs. Young Steve was very disappointed.

He deserves it for his life's work, but he really didn't do much "this" year. Seems like there are better ways to honor him. It's possible the other nominees probably did more this year, and may deserve the prize more.

I think it is time we give him a break and let him rest in peace. As per article

"Time's Person of the Year is awarded to "a person, couple, group, idea, place, or machine that "for better or for worse, ...has done the most to influence the events of the year.'" "

And there is nothing groundbreaking that Apple or Steve Jobs did in 2011 to deserve this prize. If Time was interested he could have been awarded this when iPad or iPhone came out. But in 2011 - sorry nothing that can influence the events of the year.

 They should've done it while he was alive, now it's too late. Jerks... Everyone seems to be using Steve's name as a publicity stunt now that he is dead. Let him RIP they didn't give a squat about Steve when he was alive.
