In other news, many companies do this. A friend was flown back (expat) together with 5 colleagues on the first flight possible. Luckily for them it was first class.

Companies help employees in need, in other news, bears poop in the woods. More at 5.

Some of the posts here are ridiculous and the infighting too.

The original "story" is about Apple and how it's responding to employees. It's not about how much they are or are not donating.

It's also not at ALL about Microsoft and whether or not they are donating or how they are treating their employees.

Now I'm not going to say what can and can't be discussed. But you'd think the comment would be more centered on the actual TOPIC rather than going into yet another Apple vs Microsoft pissing contest.

This is the one time I will not take sides. I'm glad to see everyone on board with helping Japan out. These are some very sad times. Everyone and anyone who can help should be doing so... all hands on deck. Stevie & Billie hats off to you both for your efforts big or small.

The 21 people who voted negatively on this story have deep issues. WTF is wrong with you people?

Love that sense of genuineness in whatever he says, however brief and to the point it is.

Or the 21 spiders that indexed every link. Not all votes are votes.

Edited to say:

Has anyone donated using the iTunes link, and if yes, did you get the normal email receipt back from Apple?

I donated via the Canadian Red Cross......and I challenge all the idiots b*tching and moaning about this article to do the same!

Very nice of the Apple team to send words of encouragement.

Those of us here in Japan appreciate the messages of support that are coming from individuals, companies and organizations worldwide.

Jobs has officially done more than the Obama administration now.

Steve Jobs is truly a wonderful individual.

Time to wipe off the steam from those Apple tinted glasses :D

Opening up AirPort (extreme) for the public < then aircraft carrier (and the rest of the 7th fleet) carrying out relief missions (+support for nuclear disaster).

it's funny how you make some **** up and then end it off with an insult... how the hell does that work? you don't know the details of the situation, NONE OF US DO. and who cares if Apple wants to help its employees, or wants to donate money. why should they have to, because they have tons of money? i have no doubt that they already have (and have probably donated more than everyone on MacRumors combined), but seriously, it's none of your business, or anyone else's here.

btw how many companies out there would go out of their way to help during a natural disaster? very very few.

It's the classic strawman argument; create a situation where one doesn't exist, out of thin air, then start refuting the "arguments" made.

Believe me, the crows are gathering with all of the strawmen that this DB threw together...

Actually, apple isn't making public their helping, but rather news groups are reporting on this internal memo. Further, to all those saying that they should do a direct donation of a big pile of cash, that's all well and good, but you obviously didn't read the memo, as it clearly states that apple is looking to donate supplies, which will do more to feed people and keep them warm and what not

Nice... I'd like to see micro$oft do something like this.... c'mon billie!

This was from an email a friend of mine who works at MS got:

...as is our custom during major world events such as this, our company and our employees are providing immediate financial and technological assistance. Microsoft made an initial commitment of $2 million to support relief efforts which includes a cash donation of $250,000 to the Japanese Red Cross Society. We’re providing free support, temporary software licenses and online services to help impacted organizations get back up and running.

Further, we have learned from past disasters that some of the most important donations happen after the initial rescue effort. Therefore, we will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional support as the country moves from the rescue phase into the rebuilding phase.

Honestly, that's pretty good, especially the part about making sure to give additional support even in the rebuilding phase (The part where the news moves on and most people not directly affected forget about the tragedy and find new things to focus on).

So, I'd say MS has Apple more than beat (and they're not even trying to get publicity from it, I see no ads advertising this fact, this was an email to employees).

Anyways, not a big fan of MS, but I will give them kudos in this regard.

don't be reasonable!

So, I'd say MS has Apple more than beat...

Don't use rational arguments here, you could cause Apple fans' heads to explode.

That's not a pretty sight - don't be responsible for challenging their world view of Microsoft as the great Satan and Apple as Allah.

They are asking you to contact HR if employees need supplies. They are not talking about general public here.

That's because it was a memo to their employees. So no surprise that in this specific instance they aren't talking about the general public.

That still doesn't mean they haven't made any other donations. And it doesn't mean they have either. We can speculate and point fingers all we want, but at the end of the day we just don't know.

Exactly.

Microsoft is trying to help people in Japan. Not just this week while the news is hot, but over the course of the reconstruction.

Apple has made a very nice gesture to help Apple's employees in Japan.

Both are good - but the "idol worship" of "anything Apple" here on MacRumours is sickening in the context of the enormity of this disaster (and the possibility each day that it will get much worse).

I count only a couple of posters in this thread that have made cynical Apple vs MS posts... multiple times, yes, but only a couple. Not exactly "idol worship", and your perpetuating this BS isn't helping.
