"Billie" already has done much more for mankind than Apple and Steve Jobs will do in 10.000 lives ...

Keeping an army of lawyers and judges around the world lucratively employed and court systems humming for a decade?

This is good for their employees and even better for publicity. However, unlike Microsoft, Apple didn't make the list of the most ethical companies. I can already see the fanboys claiming I'm some Microsoft shill but nothing could be farther from the truth.

Prison inmates are exemplary law-abiding citizens too. They don't even exceed the speed limit or fudge on their taxes. Admirable!

There was an earthquake in Japan?

Seriously though, I love how Steve emails employees directly himself.....none of this going through some peon in the employee relations department or some similar crap.

In general, Bill has done more (that we know about) for the world then Steve. But there are differences as well. 1) Bill is retired, Steve is not. 2) Bill has a heck of a lot more to work with then Steve. 3) Steve is in bad health, while Bill seems fine.

I'm not saying that Bill or Steve are any better; or that they don't do a lot. All I am saying is that Bill has done a lot, that is publicly known. I give him a lot of props for that.

As for the corporations, Apple & MS, I've heard both are generous and do a lot for their employees.

Holy crap, a fair and non-partisan response. Kudos!

It's another brilliant business idea from Gates: extort money from Buffett or Chinese billionaires to save his own wealth. And of course every little step is advertised, "Look at me, I'm a world's top philanthropist."

This is ********, of course.

The people who've received money from Gates really don't care. Well, actually, they'll say, "screw YOU."

If you mean Bill Gates, and by helping people you mean funding the world wide abortion machine, then yes he does more for mankind.

Planed Parenthood actually = Planned Murder is you lift the cover off just a smidge

Yeah, a lot of white people like to tell us brownies that, all the time.

(And, no, the numbers don't support your assertions).

sounds great aapl - not only monetary help but actual practical help of its Japan team - way to go aapl - hoping for a quick recovery in Japan

+1

Next people will say "he didn't give enough money, he should do this, he should do that." It never ends with the haters.

you maybe want to check your very own avatar before calling other people names .. I guess you are right, it never ends with the haters.

Hatred goes both ways. There is some astonishing amount of hate towards Bill Gates and his charity work here as well. There is blind and quite frankly stupid fanboys on both sides of the fence.

T.

This may surprise some of you, most of you probably won't be - if you pay taxes you're already supporting Japan. Through our goverment's disaster relief and recover funds that we use to support not only the U.S. but also our international friends, all of you are donating at some point or another. Thank you for your support.:D

Its the least what they should do. In all honesty I would like to see Apple do more like making some sort of direct donation, matching customer donations or similar. Its not like Apple couldn't afford to do it. The number of people they are helping with this effort is low. However, its better then nothing.

How do you know they aren't? Because they don't post press statements bragging about it?

Apple is not making their effort either public or hidden. They did not have a press release on the email to employees. It was simply leaked by some of the employees. In the same way, Apple did not announce or hide any other relief effort. Perhaps they have donated a large sum of money, perhaps not, but you have to admit that we simply don't know everything they did or did not do. So, please stop judging others and think about what you can do to help.

Apple is publically donating money and accepting donations. Apple giving money to it's affected employees is still donating, just instead of to the red cross or something to people that work for the company.

I'd be ticked if my house was washed out to the ocean and my company was dolling out millions in relief and I saw none of it. I don't understand why people rated this negative. Bitter stock holders? (A few who posted to the effect. Seriously, if you're going to cry that a company does some like this, I hope you arrive home to find your house is now in Oz and let's see how fast you want someone to give you money.)

A good move, if you're an Apple employee. However I'm willing to bet most people affected by this earthquake aren't. Reminds me of those Christian groups who only help Christians in these kind of events.

I don't know, I've donated a lot of my personal money to this and I'm going without for a bit. If I had the money and resources to help out the maximum amount of people that I could - I bloody well would.

Apple only helping its own and Microsoft turning this into a marketing ploy. Does make one feel a little sick .

How do you know the are only helping their own? Just because there was no big press release about it how much money the donated? Give me a break ...
Do you know, that from day one, the openend the AppleStore to give everyone access to computers and network so that they can try to connect to family, start searching/posting on the internet to find people? Did you know they they supplied as many outlets as possible so that people can charge their mobile devices (no matter if apple or ms or ...)? They opened their network that people outside the store can connect with their devices to reach out to other people? This are only the small things - there is for sure more support behind without abusing it as advertisement ...
This is btw not only true for Apple, also other companies do it. I would not have any respect if any of those companies would do it only for the advertisement effect.

People like you always complain. There are two scenarios

(1) Rich person A does not donate (at least not in public):
Response from people like you: This greedy **** does not donate

(2) Rich person A donates and it goes through the public (leaked or official)
Response from people like you: Doesn't count, it's only advertisement - make him an even more greedy ****

No matter what they do, they can't do it right in your eyes.

There is no logic in what you are saying. Apple is making public their efforts of trying to help their own staff so I don't see why they would hide their efforts of helping the rest of the population.

Because not every company uses donation as an advertising advantage, also Apple didn't make this public, it was written by employees and got out. If you read the comments on the Kevin Rose blog you will see that Apple does this kind of thing for employees all the time according to an Apple employee on that blog who had funerals to go to and Apple HR paid his plane tickets for him. Apple is a good company whether you like it or not. I know people who work there and are amazed at how much a company cares about them.

1) Not true.

This is a forum for discussion of all things Apple including Steve Jobs _business_ practices, which have nothing to do with his personal life.

Witness all the well wishes regarding his health.

2) This incredibly negative comment I'm responding to says more about you, than the people you are addressing.

They haven't even responded and you're already _assuming_ it will be negative.

Once again reflecting where your head is at.

Cheer up, you'll enjoy life more :)

1) His health not withstanding, if you haven't read anything negative on this forum about Steve Jobs personally, you really need expand what you are reading.

2) I was right wasn't I? Or would you assert that there are no "Apple can do more posts" in this thread.

I do wonder if we are reading the same thread.

And my head is firmly grounded in reality. Yours?

I doubt this email was supposed to be public but that is what happens when you email it to a large amount of employees. Was Steve supposed to call each employee individually?

Yeah. Or if they do donate, you get "that's all? Only $100,000? The guy's a billionaire, stop being so cheap!" or, "He donated $2 billion? What a show off! He's only doing that for attention!" You just can't win.

Actually it is my money. I have investments in AAPL and I have made personal donations.

How much did you donate? What is that percentage to your net income? "In all honesty" I think you should do more. On another note, I do appreciate your goodwill in that you'd like to see Japan receive support. Kudos to you on that.

The bright side, if there is one, to many Japanese not having electrical power right now is that they don't have to read some of the crap in this thread.
