Steve Jobs on iPod Touch, Future Products and Ice Cream

I wish I had been active on a forum like this for the really huge announcements: iPod, iBooks, iMacs, Powerbooks etc etc. All that stuff was so awesome... really revolutionary at the time. Remember when everything was beige? Then the first iMac hit and Bam! - coloured plastic everywhere.
The announcement today was fine - I was surprised that there was no camera in the iPod touch, but I have the feeling one will come along eventually. The Nano ... mmmmmm.... I want to love it, but I'm really disappionted that it doesn't take photos.
Other than that, I'm glad Steve is up and about and feeling better!

I'm not a game player
I'm always on a different page than Steve Jobs when it comes to Apple's products, new or old. I planned on purchasing a new 2-platter iPod Classic last year, but the god Steve said sales are not big enough so no go on that product. That means no iPod for music storage for me. Since the 32GB iPod Touch was out for several months before last years Sep show I planned to purchase a 64 GB model as I had already purchased a 64 GB flash drive. BUt no 64 GB model so no purchase last year.
This year I got all primed with the rumors of a camera in the iPod Touch. I thought that a 64 GB model with a camera would take care of those time that I am not carrying my DSLR Cannon. I see the iPod Touch as handheld general purpose computer. Not being a game player I had already started worrying about whether Steve would allow the iPod Touch to continue running business programs. The lack of a camera, an item that is on almost any new product, makes me wonder if Steve has lost it. But then I remember that Steve Jobs is really an used car salesman & not a computer designer. For that reason he'll continue to have more misses with me than hits.
The lack of a camera on the iPod Touch probably won't be a deal killer as the camera wouldn't be the usual quality I am used to, but would beat carrying 2 devices. I put off purchasing a small Cannon, put Steve will be helping their sales as far as I am concerned. Now which one to purchase first. Will it be a camera for those times that I need a small one. Or will it be a replacement for my Palms. Steve took a sure sale & made it more doubtful. I'm not sure that I want to replace my Palm with a unit that is being marketed as just a game console. If you look at the history of game computers as opposed to general purpose computers you see that game computers come & go, but general purpose computers stay around. I knew that things were not going well when the iPod Touch was only mentioned in conjunction with games. I've used computers for over 31 years now & have never purchased a game. So why would I want to purchase an Apple game console?

Vegitarian and want to gain weight? Not a problem get a coke + fries = that's a thousand calories there alone - do that 4-5x a day and you'll have bigger boobs then your wife in a matter of weeks
I think its good that they've got an angle for the touch now with gaming. It means that it is less likely to cannibalize those valuable iPhone sales while potentially bringing some new customers and it grows to become more and more of a DS/PSP rival.

We're not as impressed with announcements today because Steve's RDF was not working. He might be upright, but he needs to give that time to work again. January perhaps? At CES maybe?

How can he possibly sit there and say that the reason the Touch was not updated beyond these minor improvements is because Apple is trying to make a cheap product?
Apple and Jobs have perviously stated that the reason they will not entire into the Netbook market is because Apple doesn't produce cheap products!
If Apple truly wanted to sell more Apps for the Touch they would have done a lot better if they had more features for the Apps like the iPhone.
This is a true blunder for Apple. Apple would have been better off without the 64gb model and added a model with GPS, camera, ect for the same price point.

I've ALSO got an opinion about the iPod Touch not receiving a camera - How about you guys that are whining about it, accept that it didn't get one and either don't buy one, or buy one. Simple as pie. Mmm, pie.

Chances are... If you use an iPod Touch as your portable media player, you have a cell phone that isn't an iPhone.
Chances are also that phone you have, has a MUCH better camera on it than what would've been included in an iPod Touch - probably less than 2 MP. I mean think about it, would Apple want to put the same quality camera/video recorder they have in their 3GS and offer it on a product that doesn't require monthly service and contracts???

You are correct I will be staying with my old Touch. No reason to upgrade. Also no reason for anyone who wanted more from a Touch then it just being a fancy iPod to go out and buy one. Bottom line no reason for sales of the Touch to improve or even remain the same.

Since Apple started giving the iPod touch away with educational Mac sales, I've really seen the iPod touch really take off.
Apple's been marketing it as a "game machine"??? Not on any planet I live on. Yeah, that lack of a camera sure drove the price down, let me guess - from $200 to $199, from $300 to $299, and from $400 to $399.
If Jobs thinks the iPod touch is a gaming machine, he's lost it.

Did they not notice that Nintendo added a camera to the DS (now DSi) and it is a big hit? (At leats as far as I can see). Kids love to play with the camera stuff.

Hmm well it appears that if they put a camera, gps and video in the current Touch cycle then it would eat into iPhone sales.
They want people to buy the 8 gig iPhone 3Gs. But if Touch had a camera as well as the other bits above then 3Gs would suffer.
But propping up Nano, especially with built in radio will boost sales I think.
Maybe next cycle when the next big thing happens to iPhone and they can afford to add more to Touch by then.
Giving Touch a juicy CPU and screen was OK I guess

games is a reflection of how successful the app store has been overall. It won't help them if they split the addressable market between camera and non-camera stuff.
there are games that can use the camera (see Assassin's creed), and other apps that would attract people to the ipod touch that would use the camera. Its not about *having* a camera, its about *using* it. I think those flickr and youtube stats reflect that. iphone has a tiny marketshare of cameraphones, yet it already has the majority of uploaded photos and videos.
