I have never found a use for FireWire myself, but I can see why you guys are annoyed, I would be too.

Thank you. :) Most people who do not use FireWire usually tell the rest of us who do use FireWire to piss off. Thank you for not doing this.

Why? In the music production there are not many USB sound cards and they never work as they should. And music is a very hard realtime application. I remember
when athlon had a very bad reputation for a bug in one of the chipsets that some motherboards used. So athlon was a no-no for a studio computer. The bug as only causing some sound glitches now and then. (Very similar to usb problems) But it was very hard to get back in to the studios after that for AMD. And still is I would say. And now apple have removed the firewire from the macbook, and they have switched back to agere chipsets on the macbook pro. (Was restored back to texas in feb) And that fu**ing chip does not work with soundcards realtime needs. So now we cant use apple laptops in the studio. (New one's that is) I wait a half year. If there is no solution then I will try to do a hackintosh with a HP-IBM-Dell or what ever. Since im a nuendo user I can switch to microsoft windows if needed. I bought the concept of "It just works". It's have been a pleasant journey. And now it doesn't work any more.

Lack of FW means if I want to use the MacBook for audio (i.e. Logic Pro), I have to use a USB audio interface. And the better interfaces are all FW. Even the Apple/Apogee Duet is FW. And there's a reason... FW performs better for streaming multiple channels of audio in and out of the computer than USB 2. So if you wanna do pro audio you gotta get a MBP. But many I think would prefer the portability of the MB but it's simply not an option for most now.

Dead on.

Self-producing musicians in home studios use FW all the time, for interfaces and ext. HDDs. This is a slap in the face to a market traditionally overrepresented by Mac users (5% of total computer market, 60+% of the audio market).

I use a USB interface now. I used to use a FW400 interface, which I had to liquidate a few years ago. Guess which one was rock-solid, and which is "twitchy"?

For video and audio, where you need perfect timing of data streaming with no glitches, FW400 absolutely SPANKS USB2. I am not an interface/hardware engineer, so I don't pretend to know why this is, but it is absolutely true.

Agere chipsets? Seriously? Might as well ditch firewire on the Pros too then.
I think I'll got to a mac store with my interfaces and usb drive (to boot my studio setup) and check whether the new chipset is that bad.

The lack of FW on the macbook means my wife wont be getting one in her christmas stocking. She wants to use our fanstastic camcorder to do some basic home movie stuff *ahem!* , but as the new macbook cant connect to the camcorder... No sale.

Also, people keep saying that iMovie doesnt even work with USB properly for camcorders (quite a few have said it doesnt import)...

Its an absolute joke. Trying to con home users into buying pro $$expensive$$ laptops just to play around with home movies.... Apple should be taken to court for extortion.

We aint buying. (Wife is now looking at a Sony model)
Tell your wife to get a 999 model Macbook.

Are you serious, dude here is comparing USB to an operating system. :D

It is a perfectly valid argument. Because the uneducated masses only know USB and use Windows, should we also switch to Windows?

I only read up until page 16 or so, but didn't see anyone mentioning the fact that there was no room in the current form factor for the firewire port.

If you really want to have the firewire 400 port on the macbook, you must give up 1 of those ports. Which one would you sacrifice? The MagSafe, Display Port, and the "kensington port" definitely have to stay.

Would you give up the ethernet port, or the 2nd USB port?

I have not seen any new machines yet. But people how cares for it have seen that it is agere chip for firewire. If they have solved the problem we don't know. But be very careful if you are planing to use macbook pro for pro audio!

Nothing. As usual, the design is form over function. There is nothing wrong with having some ports at the back.

I would give up DVD-player. I love Dell's approach, put in a extra battery or a dvd/cd of your own choice. With no dvd we can have firewire and pccard!

Ditch the "line in" on Macbooks. There's already a microphone on the laptop itself. If you need more, the new micrphone earbud from Apple are compatible it seems, so you have a working microphone. Or you can get a bluetooth headset. Or you can buy a Griffin iMic ($30) that plugs into USB, gives you far better sound and has a mic/line in. I think some iBooks didn't have a "line in" either. But they had FireWire.

Is there a way to check the firewire chipset without opening the hardware?

The Line-In is at line level as well so the majority of existing microphones won't even work on it. I bought a USB headset instead of an iMic to get around this.

Removing the Line-In for FireWire is brilliant.

How many "entry-level" notebooks start at these prices? Core2Duo 15" (!!!) HP and Dell laptops are $700-$800. Macbook is 13". I know the screen is better and OSX is much better, etc, but entry price point is close to double.

So go buy you HP or Dell, it's that simple, it seems you don't value what Apple has to offer, that's why there are alternatives out there, no one is forcing you to use Apple's products.

Clearly Steve Jobs doesn't want our money. Simple solution: don't give it to him. Poor sales will send a much louder message than a petition or even bad reviews in the mainstream press.

Unfortunately I believe that for every one of us who cares about FireWire, there are two switchers who don't even know what it is. If Steve can sell them a new MacBook he doesn't need us.

At the same time most Windows people are used to having a dozen brands of everything to choose from. They change their purchase habits as often as they change their shirts. Should Apple cease to be "cool" that great mass of switchers could dry up leaving Steve with only those he has chosen to annoy.

I really like whatever site took Steve to task for how irresponsible this move is from an environmental standpoint. Apple is including manufacture, shipping and use into their carbon calculations, but they've forgotten to include the horrendous cost of replacing perfectly functional FireWire devices with USB models. A greener Apple they are not!
Yes I'm sure a couple of random dudes on the net is going to make Apple fail as a company, this is the same crap we hear whenver Apple drops something but yet they are still here alive and kicking, and I don't think Apple will "cease" to be cool anytime soon, whatever the heck that means. :D

I love that there is no firewire... what a waste of space... those who complain, just stick with your current rig, you don't need the latest stuff... and if you do, perhaps look for alternatives... there are other companies u know, apple isn't the only one manufacturing laptops
That's what I'm thinking, you would think it's the end of the world and Apple is the only company making computers, I mean what is Apple's marketshare worldwide, like 3%. :D

So you are just giving in to being taken for a ride? It's because of people like you that this usa is in the dumps.

Why bother to complain? just take what's handed out to you. right?

sorry, couldn't help it.
Because there are alternatives out there, if you don't like what Apple has to offer, go buy somethign else instead of coming and complaining on the internet. It's not even like Apple decided to drop it completely, they have other machines with it, including a 999 macbook but no it's better to whine.

This.

I understand how this whole "Eco-friendly" crap has turned into an awesome marketing gimmic by a bunch of companies, but apple has already messed up by encouraging the disposal of "outdated" peripherals.
Personally I don't care about the Eco footprint of my machines.
So let me guess Apple is forcing you to dump all your equipment even though they provide alternatives such as the 999 macbook and other computers and also there are other companies like Dell and HP also making computers, right.
