"uselessly expensive ports on the back" ?
The above is just a typical example of an uneducated user who doesn't understand the value of Thunderbold or USB-3.

You are absolutely correct, I don't understand the value of Thunderbolt. (However, I feel it is unfair to call me uneducated since I have listened to all of the endless, endless arguments for Thunderbolt and still don't see the value. Perhaps the day will come when it's useful and not expensive, but that's not this day.)

Cheers!

P.S. I added USB 3.0 via PCIe. It was $20, so I don't consider that useless nor an expensive port on the back!

Well, "to each its own".

I don't think anyone even remotely educated would argue that Thunderbolt has amazing potential, and USB3 offers a lot of bandwidth, but the point still stands that, on average, most thunderbolt devices are more expensive, sometimes more than people can afford.

I think that is ridiculous. We demand quality (not having to buy a new PC every freakin' year) and only Apple has provided. Not only is it better looking and better working, it's price per year of functionality is way lower than any cheap PC crap.

Exactly - if all you wanted was a web browser, you'd be better off buying a iPad or similar tablet... For me, much like Primematrix, I am quite enjoying having the same computer for two consecutive years! In fact, my 27" iMac is the ONLY computer I've had in 20 years that I've kept for more than 12 months through choice, and it's also the only one I haven't had to open up or rebuild in some way just to do what I need to do, and sadly what I do isn't all that intensive and power hungry...

You people crack me up. You would never know that you liked and needed the feel of a rake handle slamming you in the nose until Apple told you.

"It's a magical broken nose experience."

Apple does plenty of things that we don't like, and we combat them with mods and hacks instead of following along like the sheep you portray us as. Thanks for the dose of condescension, but you'll need to try harder.

"Halo Effect"
All those pro people buy machines that are consistent.
If they were using Windows machines for editing, how much do you want to bet that the machine they take home (laptop) would be the same?

I started using a Mac for ProTools.
Now I own 5 Macs; an old MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, MacPro and two MacBook Air machines.

Now add that to the DP G4, the Mirrored Door Dp G4 and the Dual Processor G5 that are now retired.......

I'd say the "Halo Effect" worked pretty good for Apple to extract money from my wallet.

Yeah, go ahead and dump the pro line.......

That's why I'm glad Apple didn't kill the Pro products. :D

Back in 2007 I decided to stop wasting my time with BYO computers and dealing with Windows non-sense bugs and flaws and incompatibilities.

As soon as a new 17" MBP comes out, I will upgrade my current 2007 MBP; only because it can't hold more than 4GB RAM; otherwise I would have continue using it for another 2 years at least.

In the PC world I would have to keep upgrading every 2 years.
If you seriously want a new 17MBP you can still get refurbs at the Apple Store.

I'd advise getting one, because it's unlikely Apple will ever make a new one, and if they do, it may be round.

Maybe we can get some empty MacPro Cases and stick the new one, and all this stuff, inside.

Exactly, they tout this as a "Pro" machine and marvel at the trash can design....
A pro needs a lot more stuff than the "Can" provides naked, hence you end up with something that looks like the picture.

But, you can always buy longer cables and find a place to hide it :)

True, but are you able to get around that and see that it's an incredibly brilliant and functional design? I'm not sure why nobody else has ever thought of it. If one of the primary problems with high-performance computers is the heat it produces, why not design the thing like a wind tunnel to maximize the amount of airflow moving heat out of the system? Seems obvious now that it's been revealed, but all these years, it's been boxes with fans inside which makes little to no sense.

Only if they bring it to Arizona and test it under more extreme conditions. Somes I think having all the tech R&D in Califorina is bad thing.

Anyone remember the Cube? No?

Good thing he didn't do it. Also, developers are professional users, though they don't need massive power like this.

Long live the cheese grater!!!

Image

Having just stuck in an eVGA 4GB GTX 680 FTW Edition graphics card into mine, I just don't see myself getting an iTubeMini Pro or whatever that little black can is, the one with all the uselessly expensive ports on the back.

The lack of PCI slots is odd. What's wrong with PCI exactly? It seems fine to me. Yeah, I also have the "cheese grater" that I just put an EVGA GTX 650Ti Boost SC into.

Also, seriously, "GTX 680 FTW"? I felt like a loser while I was browsing for my GPU because of how cheesy the names are. The FTW on that GPU's name does really stand for "for the win".

They're glad they didn't do this. Killing off the product line that your most dedicated (vocal) fans use is a great way to sour the entire community against you. Even though they might make more money in the short term, they would be seen a less serious company. You know, one that investors might end up not taking seriously either. It would have also probably resulted in less of an emphasis on innovation, but that isn't a guarantee.

Have you priced similar hardware specs from Dell or HP? They're so expensive and actually cheaper than the BYO options. Even our hackintosh project is so much slower than an off the shelf 27" iMac with the highest end boards available that run OS X EFI.

Agreed, except you should never buy an HP PC. I'd buy a Dell or Asus.

Segall goes on to argue that Apple is pushing 'pros' in a new direction, saying that making software powerful and easy-to-use for more customers is more important than making software that is simply powerful. He says that "Apple is walking to a place that's entirely new" with its new products, while "asking the pros to walk with them."

This must be a trend...and Microsoft actually went through with it with Windows 8. The heck with millions of office worker CAL licenses, we need to make Windows like a tablet!

Maybe we can get some empty MacPro Cases and stick the new one, and all this stuff, inside.

When released- the "new" Mac Pro will inevitably be dismissed by critics as being "a bit rubbish". And for that reason will be cruelly nicknamed from day one as "The Dustbin Hoffmann"

Consequently, it may be one small step for (Hoff) Mann. But sadly will be a giant leap backwards for fan(boy) kind

I think that is ridiculous. We demand quality (not having to buy a new PC every freakin' year) and only Apple has provided. Not only is it better looking and better working, it's price per year of functionality is way lower than any cheap PC crap.

Then don't compare it to cheap PC crap. Compare it with what you can get for the same $ and you'll find that the productivity/longevity on Windows/PCs is roughly the same. Then again, if you take hardware obsoleted by an OS as a negative, then Windows wins hands-down. I've had Thinkpads and Macbooks through the years, and I've had long runs and short runs with each product. On the downside, I have a 1-year-old $3000 iMac that has fraying cables even though it's stationary, and a 1.5-year-old Thunderbolt monitor that has splotching. I would agree that Apple's industrial design is much better. To be clear, I'm not talking ecosystem, I'm talking straight-up professional software use on a $ for $ system. Apple looks better, but functionality is very much the same.

what do you mean "considered"?

Henh??

He very definitely did kill Apple's pro products. He let them wither on the vine.

I have pros and was directed by senior management to buy them Apple products.

My response was simple: I can't. They're not made anymore.

Show me the laptop with workstation graphics or the desktop with a modern processor and chipset. You can't.

Well this "pro" will be picking up a new MP this fall and upgrading to the new version of Logic "pro". :D

Looks like we really dodged a bullet from Jobs...
