Why do you think he should give to charity, or anyone? It's his money and he can keep it if he wants.

Yeah to each his own. I have to believe he's not just holding onto it to spend it or just for the hell of it. I mean who knows how much longer he'll be around, I don't take offense to it. Ppl give away money because they like doing it, it makes them feel good about themselves. True altruism is about the rarest thing in the world, so if Steve doesn't want to he doesn't have to. And by true altruism I mean if Bill, for instance, gave away 28 billion just because, Id be amazed. I'm sure he got something out of it, he wasn't like darn I want to keep my money but I really should contribute to society I guess.

When someone passes the money isn't going with them, that's why billionaires such as Gates and Buffet have pledged to give up 50% of their wealth over their life times, it feels good to help others, and it makes no sense to just let the money sit there for nothing, they have more than enough to support themselves and their families.

Gotta love capitalism and the illusion of the free market.

$8.6 Billion! That's roughly a dollar for every person on the planet. Good for him, he's worked hard to get there. Yet, damn, that's an insane amount of money.

I often wonder, someone who works three jobs who can't afford the $400,000 for a college degree let alone a masters (and get ready for the next financial bubble, the student loans crisis), and barely makes ends meet while executives/white collar sect (who generally get in through family connections and money coughGWBcoughcough,)

Way overstated (no surprise) but you do realize you could have easily said "CoughTheKennedysCough," or "CoughNancyPelosiCough," or "CoughJayRockefellerCough," or host of other wealthy political family dynasties. Of course that doesn't fit your template.

I often wonder, how can you justify someone who works three jobs and can't afford the $400,000 for a college degree let alone a masters (and get ready for the next financial bubble, the student loans crisis), and can barely make ends meet while executives/the white collar sect (who generally get in through family connections and money coughGWBcoughcough,) coast through life with a silver spoon? The fundamentals of our economy are not strong, we ignore it but classism is alive and well in the US, especially as the middle class is shrinking and it's become extremely difficult for small businesses to compete against the Walmarts/BestBuys/Targets/Pottery Barn's of the world.

I'm sure I'll get ripped for stating this, but it's always perplexed me a bit.

PS As the Oscar winners for the documentary on the last financial crisis pointed out, not ONE executive has been in jail for what occurred. Not ONE.

I will rip you for it. Hyperbole FTW?

If you cannot afford the $400,000 or $40,000 degree then I would suggest you have your priorities wrong or most likely you are not qualified to have them. As in, there are many programs out there which offer assistance. There are many ways to fund your schooling. The problem with people like you is that your resort to whining when the winners resort to making the adjustments necessary to achieve their goals.

What most people fail to realize, either because they cannot or will not is, not all people are created equal. I am not talking from a wealth stand point, I am talking about ability. Far too many skated through school not giving a damn only to end up on message boards decrying how unfair life is and how ITS ALL NOT THEIR FAULT (which you scream out).

Yes there are times when things are not your fault, those end the moment you give up and don't try to correct them to the best of your ability. I know people who worked two jobs to pay for school. They had no life outside of school and work, guess what, they have more money than I do and I am not one bit jealous. They are successful because they saw their goal and saw all the hurdles in front of them and instead of whining for someone to do it for them they did what they needed to meet their goals. You can find stories about people doing this to this day.

My favorite quote rings so true with you:

Winners compare their achievements to their goals, losers compare theirs to that of others.

He's also the worlds oldest person having worked for 8.3 billion years on a dollar a year salary.

Steve really doesn't do anything that doesn't directly relate to Apple. That's his life.

If true, I find that very sad.

If I had similar health issues and even a fraction of his fortune I'd retire and spend as much quality time with my family and friends as possible. I've never seen the the point of raking in even more cash when you've already got more than you can ever spend.

Say what you will about Microsoft and Gates, but he does offer up a lot of his money and time to charities (including establishing his own). it is a shame $teve doesn't share that same enthusiasm for helping his fellow man, but in the end he's more concerned with running a tight ship and checking his bank account each night. But hey.. people seem to still love him and his products, so being selfish and egotistical does pay off.

Gotta remember that Bill didn't start until he had some 40+ billion in the bank and had retired from MS. (OK his wife started the foundation a bit earlier, but it didn't go into full swing until after he left)

Clearly you did not. Bill Gates siphoned off 28B. 3.5 times stevies net worth.

Jobs is greedy and doesn't donate to charity. He wants it all for himself.

Until the dollar tanks when the US pulls a Greece. Instead of giving to charity I'd pay for the campaigns of people who will get our national debt down, which would help a lot more people in the long run. We're all screwed regardless of how many charitable contributions Billy makes if we don't get the clown out of the oval office next year. Sorry to get off the subject a bit, but it just seemed appropriate for this post.

holy smokes! I thought he was atleast top 10. TBH I thought he would be #1. Wonder how that makes Steve feel? Maybe I should email him and ask but I don't want to be the one to ask ;)

He'll die and leave it ALL behind, just like the rest of us with our paltry sums. It ain't what's in the bank that matters. He (just like the rest of us) will have to face the Creator one day and give an account for all he was entrusted during his life. I think having less makes that day a little easier- at least that's what I'm going with...

I respect Bill for what he does. Honestly, I don't think Gates cares about being the richest in the world.

Jobs on the other hand, has huge ego problems. Watching the event on the iPhone antennae problem said a lot about him.

I love Apple and their products, but Jobs' need to be more active in giving back. Heck, we are the ones getting you rich.

LOL! The poor bastard gives away billions and people still bitch about his motives. Who cares? It still spends.

Do you really think these CEO's are doing what they do for the money? (hint: "Power").

Who cares when you are not healthy. I bet he would rather be healthy than having this much money.

If you knew anything about politics and the national deficit you would find that the problem started quite a while ago and has gotten progressively worse. The deficit will never go away, the US government has operated at a loss almost every year since its inception. It's totally out of control now and has been for years.

But he thinks he is the creator.

I disagree. I see it as enthusiasm for the company, its image and its products. It is one reason the company does so well. I also disagree about the overblown antenna issue.

I've never been able to wrap my head around this whole topic. Jobs "has" $8.3 billion. But he doesn't. 99+% of that money is invested. Which means other people are getting paid. So if he gives $4 billion to charity, or Bill Gates gives $28 billion to charity, who are they taking the money from? It sure as heck isn't affecting Jobs' or Gates' lives in any significant way.

Well said. Some don't have the ability, but those who do and whine about not being able to succeed due to money and what not are ridiculous. It's just harder, but it's not impossible. One of my friends works and is studying bioengineering at a school that's tuition is over 50,000 a year, but they have financial aid for a reason. And also loans. He doesn't have much money at all, he even has to send back money from his job to his home to help out. And while I don't have to go through this, although I'm not rich, I really appreciate what he has to do and appreciate the effort to be successful after growing up with little.
