In its annual list of the world's billionaires, Forbes this year ranked Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a tie with six others for 136th place with a net worth of $5.5 billion. Jobs' net worth is up from $5.1 billion in an October 2009 Forbes ranking of richest Americans and up from $3.4 billion and 178th place in last year's world ranking.
Following months of rumor and speculation, cultish king of the iGeeks presented the highly anticipated iPad in January; ten-inch, multi-touch computer intended to fill gap between smartphone and laptop. Delighted: nerds everywhere. Scared to death: newspaper and magazine publishers. Also unveiled new iBookstore and iBooks application in direct challenge to Amazon's Kindle; several book publishers have committed to content agreements.

Jobs is Disney's largest individual shareholder by virtue of the company's 2006 acquisition of Pixar, and continued increases in Disney's stock price since a deep low almost exactly a year ago have pushed his stake in the company to $4.2 billion. Apple's stock, meanwhile, has continued to soar and is up more than 150% over the past year.

Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim Helú took the top spot in this year's rankings at $53.5 billion, just ahead of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who had held the top spot 14 out of the previous 15 years.

Billg would still be far and away #1 if he hadn't given so many of his billions to his charitable foundation.

And he plans to give away 90% of it in his lifetime.

Bill Gates as MS head - Hate him

Bill Gates philanthropist - great guy

CNN mentioned that he would have about $80 billion right now.

Kudos to him. Disrespect M$ for all it is, but Bill Gates has a good heart.

I would've expected Jobs to be higher. Solo #1 at one of the world's biggest companies (Apple), largest single shareholder of Disney...

If I remember correctly, Apple isn't that large compared to other companies.
And SJ has been climbing the ladder over the years.

One of the world's richest men, and (so far) nothing on the record as far as charitable donations go. He might be giving behind closed doors, but if he isn't, I find it sad that a man with more money than he could even spend can't find it in his heart to give just a little.

No kidding

Tells you alot about a person

Maybe Slim should lower the rates on Telcel and Telmex and bump up the speed on the Paquete Conectes packages.

When you have that much it's easy to give.

Bigger respect to all the regular people who have very little, who might be struggling themselves, but still give financially, or of their time.

Of course, the big-dollar handouts get the most attention.

Wow haven't seen that screen name for a long time! Hiya clayj !

I totally agree with your post too, his contributions have been immense. Perhaps not the greatest guy in his younger years, but Bill is really making a name for himself now!

proud`

proud of Slim Helu, you guys should see..u think ATT is Expensive and bad
? he charges for iphone 1000 dlls, and no unlimeted data available.

Kind of odd that his Apple holdings are only worth 1 billion dollars. I would have guessed it was worth much more.

Well, Jobs has sold off all of his AAPL stock twice (once in 1985 when the Apple board canned him and once after Apple acquired NeXt to undermine Apple’s management.)

He sold like 4 million in 1985 and 1.5 million in 1997.

As for Gates, he wasn’t very charitable until he married Melinda. She’s often overlooked, but the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was her big idea and Bill Gates has acknowledged that many times.

In the Forbes listing dated 9-30-2009, Steve Jobs was ranked 43rd in the top 400 richest Americans with 5.1 billion. Bill Gates was #1 with 50 billion. What is interesting is that the former(?) owner(?) of CompUSA is ranked #1 in the world. What did he do to amass that fortune? He wasn't there a couple of years ago, although he was ranked up near the top.
